I train BJJ and we practice judo as well (we're working on seoi nage and drop seoi nage right now). But during randori most people push you away and stiff arm, and I am a pretty small guy (5 feet 8; 175 cm) and the rest has much more reach so I just cant get close, and they can still throw me because their legs are much longer. It's frustrating. I end up using sutemi waza (tomoe nage, sumigaeshi, yoko wakare) because I can't get other throws to work, but I'd like to get some osoto gari, ogoshi, tai otoshi and uchimata in as well someday.

@lordtrains You just need a Sutemi Waza to fake then to a backwards throw (for example, fake hard yanking lapels and putting foot slightly up as if you’re doing a Tomo (or fake guard pull) and they’ll react back, then O-Uchi!) Works a lot of the time. Try it!

Hi Kathy, thanks for another great BJJ related video. I do have a question: I am a BJJ blue belt who is fortunate to train with BJJ black belts and a provincial Judo black belt. Ever since white belt, i would go to the side and train with my Judo coach (as i want to learn Judo too). My judo coach teaches older judo rules, with leg grabs and whatnot, which i find a benefit. I want to be realistic in my expectations... to what degree will i find success with Judo Throws against BJJ practitioners, in general? Already i see a difference between me and my cohorts, and have used uchi-mata, kosoto gari, and a few others in both gi and no gi against "untrained Judo" blue and white belts. I am not sure if this effectiveness will decrease as time passes. Thanks!

Thanks for your comment sir, and I do believe you'll be effective against your BJJ cohorts using your judo for sure... it's a different kind of judo you need to use (modify it to suit you best to BJJ) - I don't have all the answers as to how to fight most effectively against BJJ practitioners but I have had some experience doing it and if you look at a couple of my vids like, "Judo for BJJ tutorials", there might be some nuggets in there of how I modify it anyway... Shoot me some comments in there or here as to how you modify yours, would love to keep up with u!

And very difficult to apply in practice if you aren't sufficiently advanced judo practitioner.

@@davidrosales2081 luckily, my head coach is an Olympic judoka team alum and we practice lots of takedowns.
