Learn 3 keys to Nathan #Mackinnon's forward stride including drills and cues to work on all of them!
Nathan Mackinnon is one of the fastest skaters in the NHL and in this video you will learn 3 reasons why and how you can apply them to level up your own forward stride!
I forgot the last step!
The last step is to work on all three keys in your stride. I recommend, after completing all the feel drills and implementation drills to film your full speed forward stride and assess where you're at with each key. You can either go back to the feel/implementation drills or just bring your attention to that particular key while performing your stride.

This is a great video. I tried it today. It works . My take away was I’ve been striding forwards (to far,kinda like a walking stride). When my foot was more underneath me (shin angle) my skates slipped to the side effortlessly.My weight was more on the middle of the blade .It’s a different feel, (lighter)but the feet just slide out and back with the help of Gravity.,not so much muscle .

Awesome stuff per usual!! I read a great article about Nate's skating development & I found something interesting. Andy O'Brien, conditioning coach for both Nate & Sid, was instrumental in Nate's skating development. He met Nate at 14/15 or something & saw Nate had poor shin angle. Luckily Andy realized the importance in skating (years before other people) & decided to regress Nate's training to fix it. So for an entire summer, Andy had Nate walk on a treadmill at a slow pace but an extremely steep incline. Doing this forced Nate to naturally allow his knee to move over his toe/develop elite shin angle & strengthened his calves. And the rest was history. P.S. I started walking on a high incline myself during my morning fasted cardio & it's REALLY hard even at a slow pace bc the upward angle really works your calves, can't wait to see how much it improves my explosiveness.

Amazing insight J.J! Thanks for sharing. I could definitely see how an incline treadmill can help with shin angle.

Hi, I'm new to all this. Does the way you tie your skates have an impact on your movement ? Like tying them too tight around the ankles ?
@TheDownhillSkater
@TheDownhillSkater Жыл бұрын
Hi Msanna4, you're right on about the impact of tying your skates too tight. If they are too tight around your ankle it may restrict your ability to get good shin angle and y angle. That said, there's plenty of great players that tie their skates very tight and make it work. Although from my experience, most great skaters leave the top eyelet undone. Thanks for the question!

It’s part of the train 2.0 membership that includes all the courses. If you are a member you could find more on the forward stride in the DSS 2 and DSS 3 courses. I hope that helps!

greater joint mobility. The amount of work of the joint. strong ligaments, tendons. strong muscles.All this Multiplied by the technique of skating.

I agree, if your ankles, knees, hips etc are not in good condition it is very hard to get in the positions required to perform the mechanics “optimally”. Thanks for the comment!
