@@PeachyFlyFishing it's a different situation Steve, I only tie a 10-15 cm dropper off the dries bend to the nymph when casting to tailers, Tying the dry to a dropper is far more effective in moving water mate. Great video , keep it up Steve !

Thanks peachy great video , have been using a dropper tag to fish nymph under dry for a couple trips now but do you have any tips to stop the dry from being pulled under ? I have been trying to use less foam and more along the lines of tabanas caddis dries but always find that after a small drift they break the surface of the water particularly if there’s a bit of flow . I have been pretty conscious on using small nymphs and adding floatant etc but still seem to be running into this issue. Any tips are greatly appreciated !

For sure mate, here's a few ideas. Firstly, make sure to grease your leader well down to the tippet ring with something like payette paste to keep the leader floating. Gel floatant doesn't stay on long enough, you need proper grease or paste and keep doing it about once an hour or so. Because if your leader sinks, then when you go to pick up the flies it drags the dry fly under, so that's a big one. Apart from that, you need to choose a bouyant dry fly, and also a nymph with not too much weight. I fish nothing heavier than a 2.5mm tungsten bead on the nymph, often just a 2.3mm or even a 2mm. To get that to sink well, you need to tie a fly that is very lightly dressed (a perdigon even), and also you need to fish thin tippet down to the nymph, say 7X or lighter to get it to cut through and sink well. Also, give your dry fly a bit of treatment with some gel floatant, and regularly dry it with the rubber band trick, Amadou or cloth, and powder dessicant or fly dip. If you're in heavily broken water then you need a particularly bouyant dry fly, maybe something with deer hair or something like the cdc & poly caddis that I showed in the latest dry fly video. Hope that helps! :)

Could you tie a tippet ring to the end of your tippet and leave, say, 8” of tag to tie your dry fly to? Then tie a longer length of tippet to the ring and tie your nymph to that. Wouldn’t this solve the three problems with the dry fly that you listed?

Yes absolutely you could do that! It might cause a few more tangles in the tippet section, as your tippet is generally meant to cast slack with a dry fly. And in very still water you might want to have the tippet further away from the fly for pure dry fly. Good suggestion though!
