@PeachyFlyFishing4 күн бұрын
Thanks mate! I’m not sure on the exact distance, but we launched just below the dam and finished at the old caravan park up above town if that helps. As the river was fairly low we probably didn’t cover as much as you would if it was high and pumping.

A word of caution though, the Tumut runs very fast when it’s up and is potentially dangerous for the inexperienced - I would strongly advise that you stop in at Tom’s Outdoors or call Angus at Haul Fly Fishing to get some advice on river conditions and safety. Have fun, hope you catch a few! :)

I’d say it’s a side arm roll cast not really anything new .
@PeachyFlyFishing4 күн бұрын
The snake roll has been around for a long time as a Spey cast, so no I’m not saying it’s something new, but it’s incredibly useful. It’s an extension of the roll cast, a normal roll cast is along the line the fly is already in, whereas a snake roll is a change of direction cast for repositioning the “train tracks” or the direction of the anchor. :)

A roll pick up works better especially with more line in the water as it lifts more line and higher.
@PeachyFlyFishing7 күн бұрын
Thanks, do you mean when it's directly upstream of you?
@Scoopster6 күн бұрын
@@PeachyFlyFishing Yes for upstream and across and up dry fly. I also use an aerial snap T, single Spey or a snake roll when down stream depending on wind direction and strength. All will lift the line without ripping the water and allowa quick follow up cast if needed. It helps to have a triangle tapered line like an. Airflo Tactical these resemble Scandi tapers and roll cast beautifully while land dry flies gently.

Could you tie a tippet ring to the end of your tippet and leave, say, 8” of tag to tie your dry fly to? Then tie a longer length of tippet to the ring and tie your nymph to that. Wouldn’t this solve the three problems with the dry fly that you listed?
@PeachyFlyFishing16 күн бұрын
Yes absolutely you could do that! It might cause a few more tangles in the tippet section, as your tippet is generally meant to cast slack with a dry fly. And in very still water you might want to have the tippet further away from the fly for pure dry fly. Good suggestion though!

Thanks peachy great video , have been using a dropper tag to fish nymph under dry for a couple trips now but do you have any tips to stop the dry from being pulled under ? I have been trying to use less foam and more along the lines of tabanas caddis dries but always find that after a small drift they break the surface of the water particularly if there’s a bit of flow . I have been pretty conscious on using small nymphs and adding floatant etc but still seem to be running into this issue. Any tips are greatly appreciated !
@PeachyFlyFishing16 күн бұрын
For sure mate, here's a few ideas. Firstly, make sure to grease your leader well down to the tippet ring with something like payette paste to keep the leader floating. Gel floatant doesn't stay on long enough, you need proper grease or paste and keep doing it about once an hour or so. Because if your leader sinks, then when you go to pick up the flies it drags the dry fly under, so that's a big one. Apart from that, you need to choose a bouyant dry fly, and also a nymph with not too much weight. I fish nothing heavier than a 2.5mm tungsten bead on the nymph, often just a 2.3mm or even a 2mm. To get that to sink well, you need to tie a fly that is very lightly dressed (a perdigon even), and also you need to fish thin tippet down to the nymph, say 7X or lighter to get it to cut through and sink well. Also, give your dry fly a bit of treatment with some gel floatant, and regularly dry it with the rubber band trick, Amadou or cloth, and powder dessicant or fly dip. If you're in heavily broken water then you need a particularly bouyant dry fly, maybe something with deer hair or something like the cdc & poly caddis that I showed in the latest dry fly video. Hope that helps! :)

Sometimes, I’ll make an odd side arm cast to get a long drag free drift. I’ll under power the delivery and this leaves a mend or loop in the line/leader upstream of the fly. I use this on a small stream with lots of overhang, but it’ll work anywhere. You’re targeting a current lane and not a specific spot.
@PeachyFlyFishing17 күн бұрын
Yes absolutely, that's basically a negative curve cast like I described. The amount and placement of the curve depends on how much you under-power the delivery cast, but also the tightness of the loop, and how much you have the rod tilted to the side, that's how you control the size and shape of the negative curve. :)

What about rivers where down stream presentations are a must. Is this leader set up still applicable ?
@PeachyFlyFishing21 күн бұрын
Hi mate, yes absolutely, slack is important for downstream presentations too. The only thing with downstream casts is to place the slack in your curve cast upstream and in line with the fly. So if you’re facing downstream and the river is on your left, cast off the right shoulder instead of the left in order to get the proper curve shape in your leader. I hope that makes sense….:)

Don't be afraid to cast down and across with dries. The fish will see your fly first when quartering your cast downstream. The trick is to wait for the fish to turn on the take, or you'll pull it out of its mouth on the set.
