When your dad has over 60 year experience digging razor clams. All 4 of us caught out limit in about an hr, would've been sooner if I was not recording.
Almost a minus foot tide today but the razor clam holes were showing as small dimples in the sand for a split second. Complete opposite from yesterday where there were many doughnut and key holes present.

THANK YOU, MOST KINDLY, FOR YOUR COMMENT. MY YOBO IS KOREAN, SO I AM FAMILIAR WITH YOUR CULTURE. MY CLAM GUN IS FASTER THAN SALT OR SHOVEL, WHICH IS WHY I PREFER THIS METHOD. ON A PUBLIC DIG, THERE IS A LOT OF COMPETITION, AND HE WHO IS FASTEST, USUALLY GETS THE MOST AND BIGGEST CLAMS. I WISH YOU WELL.

he just taught you everything you need to know. there's a hole on the top of that cylinder once he gets it in the sand he puts his finger over the hole and it creates a suction that pulls the hole core out. The trick is spotting the clam. they live in the tidewater and just the top of their necks stick out of the sand about a quarter of an inch we would go along tamping the sand because they're really hard to spot until they feel a vibration in that neck contracts real fast and it leaves a little hole in the sand you have to run over and put your tube on top of that hole and push it down. That's a semi new invention. when I first started doing it the only where it was done was with clam shovels that were about 4 in wide and about 18 in long and you'd slide that shovel down into the sand next to the hole and you'd have to stick your hand down underneath there and catch the clam as he was going down. you couldn't really use gloves or you couldn't feel the clams and they're called razor clams for a reason their shells are razor sharp. it was a bloodsport. The sand is only hard on the surface and they could go down three or four feet quicker than you might think I can't count how many times I'd stuck my shovel in the sand and push my hand down in there just to feel him squirting away The deeper they go the more water is down there and they can move around in that slush pretty good. a ton of fun though this guy's set up pretty well we used to go out build a gigantic fire and weighed out barefoot with just our jeans on until our legs and hands and arms turn blue from the 52° water and then go stand by the fire to warm up. you could only catch him when the tide was going out so you had a small window. The tougher you were the more clams you can get because if you spend all your time standing around the fire The tide would start coming back in and you wouldn't be able to get anymore. fun times though real fun times. I don't know where this guy is but he's got a secret spot because there's not many places left on the Oregon coast where there's enough of them to harvest like that and I never did see any real big ones that big.

for those who are wondering, the handle of the tube has a hole. You leave it uncovered as you push down, cover it with your thumb as you pull up and that creates the suction. I grew up using them... or a similar version at least.

fond memories there man. we used to go out every year with the kids along the 10 mi beach between coos Bay and Winchester Bay. in the '70s we can get buckets and buckets of them as a tide went out. The beach got so overworked that by the mid '80s you'd have to get a knee deep water at low tide to find them. those are some nice big razor clams there. we'd catch enough clams in a weekend to make clam chowder for the rest of the winter.

in southern China, razor clams were very common. Fresh razor clams do not need to be overcooked, they are very tasty and do not have a fishy smell. Add some grated ginger, fry for a few seconds, add to the soup and add chopped green onions, it will be refreshing and delicious.

In the quiet depths of the sandy shore, fear permeates the air as the malevolent Razor Clam collector emerges. He strides along the beach with a predatory grace, his eyes gleaming with an unholy thirst for shells. My heart races within my shell prison as he draws nearer, each step sending tremors through the earth. I huddle among my fellow clams, helpless and terror-stricken, as he approaches. The moon casts an eerie glow on his figure, his silhouette resembling a dark harbinger of doom. His metallic tool glints in the faint light, a sinister instrument that heralds our demise. As he comes closer, panic seizes me, and I struggle to burrow deeper into the sand, praying for salvation. But there is no escape from his relentless pursuit. The chilling sound of his footsteps grows louder, echoing the pounding of my heart. I watch in horror as he mercilessly strikes down clam after clam, their agonized cries lost in the salty breeze. Time slows as his shadow looms over me, his gaze fixated on my trembling form. The salty tang of fear fills the air as his gloved hand descends, cold and unyielding. I can feel the edges of his tool pressing against my shell, the promise of excruciating pain and inevitable death. My mind screams for mercy, for a miracle, as I prepare to meet my gruesome fate. The moment arrives, swift and cruel, as he wrenches me from my sandy sanctuary. The searing pain is unbearable as my shell cracks and splinters under his grip. The world blurs, the sound of crashing waves muffled by the agony that engulfs me. The last thing I see is his triumphant smile, a chilling embodiment of his sadistic pleasure. And so, the beach becomes a graveyard of shells, a testament to the Razor Clam collector's reign of terror. His footsteps fade into the distance, leaving behind a trail of destruction and shattered lives. The once tranquil shore now bears witness to his monstrous appetite, a reminder that even the deepest sanctuaries are not beyond the reach of darkness.

Sinonovacula constricta.

@@skuzzlebutt9745, so ...... Do carnivores in the wild not deserve to live? Because, in case you didn't know, all they do is eat meat and they, you know, kinda have to kill for that. Usually involves some suffering. I understand that it's sad and pulls at heartstrings to see something die (genuinely, not sarcastically), but everything on earth consumes everything else eventually. If there were no predators to keep herbivore populations in check, herbivores would starve en masse. Personally, I would rather be "brutally murdered" for a few minutes than waste away for months before I die.

He seems to struggle pulling that up. I don't understand why his device seems so labor intensive. My dad made 3 of these digger posts and even being fairly scrawny little kids, we were able to do that quite easily. Ours were designed quite differently though. Dad made them in his machine shop at work. We'd walk 10 minutes down to the bay in Coos Bay, and get buckets of clams. We also used to haul in dozens of big sand shrimp. Our local bait & tackle shop paid us kids pretty good for the shrimp. They sold it to the crabbers to use as bait in their crab rings. What a wonderful childhood we had growing up in a city on the bay. That town has changed drastically, for the worse 😢 Like many other places, drugs and crimes are taking their toll.

@@janeE011 Not so much anymore. It's changed, and drastically. Not immune to drug epidemics facing the rest of this nation, Coos Bay, Oregon has suffered the effects too. My Mom & Dad, younger brother & sister, many aunts and uncles, along with countless cousins, still live in Coos Bay. While the beaches and forestry remain beautiful and, for the most part, untainted, sadly the population isn't what it used to be. If you ever look up crime statistics, Coos Bay, and another one of my favorite towns, Astoria, have some of the highest crime rates in Oregon. 😢 Last I checked Coos Bay, once the peaceful sleepy little town where I was born and raised, was the 5th most dangerous city in Oregon to live in. Astoria was ranked number 1 or 2. It's very hard for me to fathom these terrible changes in all these towns I loved so much, like Sutherlin. We spent countless weekends visiting grandparents in Sutherlin and Roseburg. But it's true and it's real and affects everyone. My grandpa was killed by a repeat offender drunk driver in a hit and run in Sutherlin, and my favorite Uncle, Milton, was bludgeoned to death in a gas station robbery. He'd just returned home from serving overseas in the military a couple weeks prior to his murder. I could go on and on about how the crime has affected my family directly, but those were by far the two most traumatic events. I personally witnessed and noticed things beginning to take a turn for the worse starting around 1984 😢

As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm, golden glow over the endless expanse of wet ocean sand, I, a humble razor clam, nestled deep within the protective embrace of the shore. The rhythmic ebb and flow of the tide served as a lullaby, soothing my fears, for I knew that the old man would soon return, his intent clear-to seek out my kindred and take them, destined for an unknown fate. From my concealed vantage point beneath the grains of sand, I watched the world above. The man, with his silhouette etched in the twilight, emerged as a solitary figure against the darkening sky. His yellow tool, the harvester of my kind, was a looming shadow on the horizon, glinting like a harbinger of doom. With every footstep he took, the old man's presence sent shivers through my cylindrical body. I was unable to feel emotions in the way humans did, but a primal dread consumed me. My shell, designed over eons of evolution, was no match for the man's relentless determination. In the stillness of the night, I contemplated the purpose of my existence, my role in this intricate dance of life and death. With each approaching step, I retreated deeper into the cool, damp safety of the earth, burrowing with a renewed urgency. The sound of the old man's tool striking the sand echoed in my fragile world, like the ominous drumbeats of a funeral dirge. He was searching, tirelessly digging to uncover my brethren, one by one, each destined for a fate unknown. The moon, a radiant pearl in the inky sky, cast a silvery sheen upon the sand, illuminating the man's path. His sack, tied securely to his belt loop, rustled softly as it filled with the clinking, living treasure he sought. My heart-or the closest approximation I had-quivered with dread as I listened to the fate of my companions. The night was long and eerie, marked by the relentless sound of digging and the knowledge that the man's mission was far from over. As dawn approached, a new day seemed to promise relief, but I knew it was but a temporary respite. The old man would return, and his relentless pursuit of my kind would continue. In my quiet moments of reflection, I pondered the intricate web of life, the cyclical nature of existence, and the inexorable march of time. I was but a small cog in the grand machinery of life on this island beach, and the old man was another, both following our predetermined paths. Though my days were numbered, and my fate was bleak, I took solace in the beauty of the world above, in the gentle caress of the ocean's waves, and in the understanding that my existence, however transient, was a thread in the rich tapestry of life itself. And so, I waited in silent acceptance, knowing that, in the end, the old man and I were both bound by the relentless hand of destiny, each playing our role in the unfolding drama of life on the island beach.

From my days digging on the coast of Washington in the 70’s, those would be considered medium sized. But they’re all good eating, no matter the size.

It’s a clam just like the small clam that you pick it up like that by hand and you let them wash with water and putcsalt to vomit the excess soil they have inside and you can steam in water or sauté with garlic , onions, pepper and can add chili leaves 🍃 for flavor .you can drink the soup water base and good. Never tried that one but it’s all the same that’s the hard version like chewy type (?
