This is why I watch you two. Realistic talks about real situations. I couldn't agree more about the 'being flexible' part in terms of figuring out one's own solution. I'm not a big fan of parks anyway, except for every now and then. Which is why I'm about to upgrade my onboard power situation so that will never be an issue again. I'm also about to re-domicile from Florida. Looking very hard at AZ or NV in my case for various reasons. And 100% agree about fixing your rig/vehicle yourself whenever humanly possible. There are those that are philosophically opposed to 'doing their own maintenance'. That's fine if you're independently wealthy. Even if I had that kind of money I wouldn't spend it on that. I'm sure others will have very different opinions.

A large consideration we are able to go full-time, is my 55+ year's worth of being a mechanic, a lifelong DIY'er, wr to almost always doing my own maintenance on the truck/trailer.

Before this past August I've never had an RV. My wife of 29 years decided she didn't want to get to 30. so I did the math and bought a 2018 Bullet and moved to an RV Resort and that is now my home. So technically I am full time but I just don't constantly travel, and when I do I don't have to pay for hotels, and my parents are putting a 30 amp outlet on our land for when I go there.

Thanks another great video. One other reason folks stop RVigg that you didn't cover. RVing is almost always a team sport.. When I lost my wife, It was a very hard decision to make, but I have decided to try going out solo I am discovering others who have made the same choice. We made our domicile to South Dakota about 10 months ago and it was very easy and we saved a lot of money on licensing and sales taxes as we just bought a truck and trailer. Car insurance is much cheaper than our previous state of Washington. I’ve heard car insurance is cheaper in South Dakota but the state health insurance is more than Florida. We are heading out to go to Baja Mexico for the winter in a few weeks. You should consider it. The boondocking on the beaches is unbelievable. This will be our second trip. To change your domicile you need to spend one night and get your drivers license in person. You only have to go back once every five years to renew your drivers license. There are many videos on this.

We are full-timers with domicile in Spearfish, SD. Best decision we ever made. We use Anytime Mailbox which provides us with our address. We've had absolutely no issues. The best part is no state income tax and no personal property tax! We love Spearfish so much we spend several weeks every spring and fall in that beautiful little town.

Enjoyed this episode, LTNT. I would recommend buying two properties [One for winter and one for summer] and invest in septic tank, maybe electricity and/or solar and water on both lots. That's what my wife and I plan on doing. We want to buy 5 acres or more somewhere in Colorado and 5 acres or more somewhere in Tennessee. We may consider a third property somewhere in south Florida that's more inland; about 30 to 45 minutes away from the beach.

@liketheresnotomorrow my father-in-law is going to give us 5 acres to use as a home base. He gave my my wife's other sister 5 Acres years ago and they built a house on it. We live in Texas for many years but we may be back to southeast Oklahoma. The winters normally aren't too bad and my wife's parents aren't getting any younger so we will probably spend a few extended periods there. Will allow us to spend time on the road but have a place to be when we need to be

Make sure you check the state laws AND the local ordinances as to whether you’re allowed to park your rig on property before you buy! More and more places are not allowing long term RV parking because they don’t meet building codes. Just check before buying, even in the boonies!

You guys are so right. After 8 months we found the cost has exceeded our planned budget. Our fifth wheel is in the shop for a broken frame right now. One of the many unplanned expenses We were supposed to be at Romp It Up and was planning to meet you guys and thank you personally for your advice, and the great budget spreadsheet you provided us. It works great! We changed our domicile from Oregon to South Dakota. Simple process of staying one night and taking receipt into DMV. Make an appointment and we were in and out in 15 minutes with new SD driver licenses. We save a lot since Oregon taxed my retirement and South Dakota does not have state income tax. Happy trails....

As a full timer now for about five years you are spot on. First you simply can't sustain traveling every couple days maybe as married twenty somethings with no kids but otherwise staying put for a minimum of one week and usually two saves your sanity and budget. Partial hookups, boondocking, and longer stays plus eating in are big money savers. Also healthcare is something you should plan for home base somewhere where you do your annual physical, dental, eye care etc. It probably means a month in one spot but that's OK. I actually had cancer and as a result my kidney removed we camped in a RV park for three months near family and are back on the road again just got back from returning for a couple weeks to do my six month check up all good so far and cancer free. Now just need annual scans so we work those into our travel. We are retired but only mid 50s and live of a $4k/month pension in a used class C and tow a used Jeep everything is paid for so no debts which is key.

Thank you again for the great information and definitely all things to take serious note of. We appreciate your candor and all of the hard work you put into these videos. We are still pursuing the early Spring fulltime RV'ing with an Alliance Paradigm which we will buy after the new year. We have been getting organized/preparing. It does take a lot of prep work and logistics that need to come together, but "it's happening" and we couldn't be more excited, trying to relax, feeling scared, worried. LOL!!! I feel like I've been exhausting my resources looking for work. I also feel like something is right under my nose and I'm missing it! We intend on a SD domicile or Wy. SD definitely an easier less expensive option, as we read. I completely agree with the healthy lifestyle, and we also like and have made craft beer! EEK! Safe travels to you both, continue to enjoy each day and here is hoping things will start coming down in price! /dls

Hello. So Florida is the highest insurance, TX is next w/SD the lowest of the 3 (from talking to the insurance folks). But... SD has changed it rules as of 2023 regarding domicile & voting. Escapees website regarding domicile explains the change very well. So.. if ya still wanna vote.. SD is likely not going to work out. TX used to require an inspection each year, a friend in TX said that is going away except around the big cities, so that would be good. I was looking at TX, but my ID insurance is so much less even with paying income tax, I come out ahead in ID vs TX. Good luck.Thanks for sharing.

We have a South Dakota domicile and also use Escapees for mail service. For your auto insurance, you will still need to provide a "garaging address" for each vehicle that will need to be in South Dakota. With your daughter on your policy, that might not be possible. I recommend giving Escapees a call to discuss your options. They've seen and heard it all.

We are both pretty handy but my biggest concern is power. What do you guys recommend as far as being more solar dependent? Thanks and safe travels

Hello from Colorado (aka...Wests on the Move)I know some are leaving because they no longer feel safe in their RVs. As I have first hand knowledge of actual current and former owners of Grand Design RVs, these major issues with them are real and much larger than the RV assembly company will admit to. Right now there is a full NHTSA investigation (10/9/24) into just frame failure alone of the 2017-2023 Grand Design Solitudes and Momentums (potentially up to 55,887 units). This doesn't even include the other GD 5th wheels and now seeing travel trailer with I-beam cracks, bent A-frames, slide out water intrusion, etc... People are leaving the RV life because of their frustration with the RV assembly companies.

Problem with mobile techs they are expensive and they usually have to order parts because they dont have them on hand. That can take a while and multiple visits.
@liketheresnotomorrow
@liketheresnotomorrow 13 күн бұрын
We have used probably 8 mobile techs in our two years and none had to order parts, but it is possible depending on what’s wrong. They are more expensive BUT if a service place or dealer won’t guarantee any timeframe and your full-time, that aurbnb or hotel will far outweigh the extra cost of the mobile tech. If you have the time to wait, yes, would totally agree that some-timers or part-timers could get a better price if they can leave their rig.

Hi there, I'm new to full time rv life (leaving in Jan) and currently trying to figure out, drivers license, LLC, and insurance? I live in Florida. You mentioned you use Escapees for your domicile. Could you tell me more about that service? I don't see that on their website.
@liketheresnotomorrow

It's basically lumped in with their mail service. Here's a link.escapeesmailservice.com/how-escapees-mail-forwarding-service-works/ In FL, you get a domicile (home address) fort all official use. Like licenses, taxes, anything where you need FL residency. You get a separate mailing address (ours is in TX) for everything else, including all mail. They have great customer service. I just called them at the beginning to help me choose the right options. We LOVE this service. We also do the extra scanning option so that we can immediately see the contents of the mail pieces if we want. That way you don't have to send for your mail so often, you'll have a scan.

We just recently made Texas our home state. We were able to establish residency, transfer our titles,register to vote & get Texas DL in a couple of days, after gathering all our necessary documentation. Each County may do things differently, but in Hill County the Tax assessor and the DPS are in the same building. Literally across the hall from each other. The wait was not bad, and they were very helpful in guiding us through the process. We did have to do a vehicle test, but it was only $7- and took less than 10 mins.at a local shop. My understanding is that is going away, but even if its yearly, thats not bad. Our driver license were $35- and last 8 years. We have noticed that insurance rates for our vehicle are higher, but comparable to what we paid up in WA state. We actually bought a piece of property to park on when we are here; with plans to put a home on before we decide to come off the road. I imagine there are other ways to establish residency though. Hope this is helpful 😊

It would be interesting to chat with full timers who lived the dream for 20+ years to see if they regret selling their bricks and sticks for life on the road- thinking about the loss of real estate equity over those years in combination with owning a depreciating asset that has had an ongoing cost of maintenance along with rising overnight costs. I’d be curious to see how many would do it again.

We have no intention of full timing that long. That was never the goal. We have only met a couple of people who have done it that long. We will do it until we feel compelled to settle somewhere again. It’s not a forever thing for most. If you’re smart, you have an exit plan from day 1.

We have a 2023 Intech OVR Expedition. 400 watts solar with 200 amp hours lithium with 2000 watt inverter. We have 44 water/ 30 grey / 26 black. We are headed out in 2025 full time. Should we get a portable tank to empty black and Grey tank?

@liketheresnotomorrow 16 күн бұрын
Depends. If it’s not that big of a deal to just go drive to a dump station and go back to your camping spot, no, you don’t really need a portable tank. I know many smaller rigs that just leave their stuff setup to hold their spot (chairs, rigs, grills etc) and drive to dump and come back. We are so big and have so much crap, that it’s a pain to do that. So a portable dump tank or tote is easier for us. You might just try it before you get the portable tank.

@@chadkoller7809we know people who choose to just take the rig, dump and come back. We won’t do it because our setup and teardown is to laborious. Plus, we’ve been in spots where it was tricky getting in and we didn’t want to put the rig through the road out anymore than we have to. It will vary from spot to spot. Now that we have that collapsible tote solution, it’s not as bulky as the last tote. It’s all personal preference I suppose

Texas is a nightmare for registering vehicles renewal every year, & inspections. My bf has to come back every November to 93°F w/90% humidity. He’s trying to bribe them right now into moving it a month ahead if he pays double. And there’s been the most insane shortage of Department of Motor Vehicles since 2017. Even though I had an appointment last year, I was there for 9 hours… didn’t even know they stayed open that long.

@@liketheresnotomorrow Not for all counties or all vehicles. Every few years they come up with new laws that sound great, but it’s always more complicated and more expensive than before. The county is where you pay property taxes & register vehicles. Lines are usually bad there, but I’ve never spent more than 3 hours in line, usually 30-50 minutes is the norm. DMV could be over a hundred miles away… that’s where you get your drivers license.. which I will never do in the state of Texas again.

Not sure what you mean. Nothing interferes. Only thing we noticed is that the screen door opening had to be in the open positions when the door is shut. But you don’t need the screen door when it’s shut so not a problem.

I don't think there is any particular trend. I think people tend to operate in cycles of a few years in length. So your cohort of RVers, who all joined the youtube RVer community around the same time may all be moving away from the lifestyle in similar timeframes, but there are plenty of us coming in to take their places, too - but we haven't been around long enough to feel like community members to the old hands, yet. We'll start making content in greater numbers as we gain experience and knowledge to share, and then our cohort will be the popular youtube RV channels for a few years, and then we'll grow out of it in a similar way and some new cohort will take over. I've seen similar patterns emerge in woodworking youtube, synthesizer youtube, home automation youtube - the long term folks start talking about how 'everyone' is leaving and moving to new interests but it only feels that way to the old hands.

Now you are talking about diet. That's another interesting one for me. I eat like absolute crap at home (recently divorced), so I'm looking forward to moving into my RV (under construction) precisely so I can force myself to stop with restaurants and processed food and encourage cooking by boondocking out where I don't have access to road and processed food. I could do that where I am now, of course, but I can walk downstairs and find a food truck or restaurant within a 5 minute walk, and that's just too convenient for me to do much cooking here.

When people see an rv on the road they say “oh how nice they are having fun” i wish i could one day do that.
