Also, unsolicited advice: I’m a self taught musician, and I absolutely regret it. I wish I would have did more lessons in my early years because certain habits are hard to break. Definitely have somebody who can mentor you when you’re learning!

All great points. I’m self taught as well and then developed more later. I suggest two other tips. 1 - learn at least basic theory preferably more than that. Gets the bigger picture to click. 2 - just try it. You’re by yourself. Mash those keys like you don’t care (but with intent). In other words practice whatever. You can’t be embarrassed by yourself.

Love the 2 additional pieces of advice. Some of the best discoveries come from just "making noise" and trying to play things without thinking about the rules or theory.

I’ve been playing keys for about 20 years, and the mistakes you mentioned (especially the first one) I made for years! I’ve improved drastically in the areas you mentioned (again, especially the first mistake you mentioned).

Thanks for this video! 🌻 For the most part I'm self-taught from about 5 yrs old with a few early piano lessons and some theory in college, and after decades of playing, I'm still an amateur & have lots of things to address if I'm to improve. I typically play only octaves in the bass, adding the occasional 1- 5 -1 to accompany chords played with my right; or, i.e., if I play a Bbmaj7, I might play the 1 & the maj7 in the bass, but I never play chords with my left hand. 😕 I'm STUCK. Maybe you could show us some exercises to retrain my left hand for a more advanced execution & a fuller sound.

God bless bro I was curious on which gospel artist you’d recommend im not really knowledgeable on much of the genre since most of the songs I play are Spanish/Hispanic. I’d really like getting into gospel/jazz so if you have any recommendations it’d be greatly appreciated have a blessed day!🙏🏼
