I think it's important for listeners that they don't feel like they could have written the song themselves or like they "already know" everything you're saying. Predictability, literal lyrics, and lack of depth all lean into this. Many people struggle to express complex emotions or convey a good story, but most people can rhyme with the word "tonight" and describe very literal, simple emotions. That's why they expect artists to convey those things for them in other ways, otherwise like why bother? One of my own exercises is to imagine I'm writing the song as a riddle. A lot of riddles have double or triple meanings, playing between the literal and the poetic. And by forcing the listener to guess at the meaning, the song becomes a sort of Rorschach test in which their own experiences and feelings fill in the blanks to form the themes. It allows the song to mean something to them, but you still seem like you know something they don't. And it allows the song to grow as they listen to it again and again.

I think the lack of depth is tied to a broader issue of not thinking through what we write from the listener's perspective. I see this in sponsored Instagram music ads so often, where the only thing we're told about the song is; "I worked so hard on this and I'm super proud of it!" That's great for the writer, but why should *I* check it out? In my teens and twenties, if you didn't fall in love with the song for whatever catalyzed me to write it, there was nothing else in there. I centered my animus - and often that was some rhyme scheme or something else with no emotional impact - and if you didn't care about that, too bad. Now, I try to consider if there's something for listeners who are different from me. And it's been received a LOT better (i.e., received at all).

Can you help me try making a song with these lyrics, i need to make it bard and mysterious please. 🙏 Verse 1: She ran through the forest, her feet light on the ground The trees rustled in the wind, like whispers all around Her heart pounding, her lungs burning, she pushed on With every beat, with every step, she's found her own song. Verse 2: She darted through the trees, like a shadow in the night The only sound was the crunch of leaves under her might She felt alive, free, powerful, with every stride The forest was her escape, her playground, her pride.

I think chords are tools to be used to display the emotion. I know so many songs that use that 2 5 1 and aren't boring. Most of jazz has that progression hard coded. I dont think art becomes better just for the sake of it being different. I think chord progressions do most of the work for pointing you to where you are gonna go. 2 5 1 for jazz, 4 3 2 1 for rnb, or the 1 5 6 4 for pop. I do think being too on the nose is what you should avoid if that is your goal as an artist.
@AnnieDang19 күн бұрын
Absolutely agree with you! I love PLENTY of songs that use these chord progressions. Chords are such powerful tools to convey emotion, but they're just one piece of the puzzle that makes a song truly unique. It's amazing how even the most common progressions, like the 2-5-1 in jazz or the 1-5-6-4 in pop, can feel fresh and expressive when combined with creative arrangements, melodies, rhythms, and dynamics. It isn't always about reinventing the wheel; it's about using these tools in a way that resonates with listeners and expresses something meaningful. Avoiding being 'too on the nose' is such a great tip, too!! it's that balance of familiarity and surprise that keeps things interesting
@max663p17 күн бұрын
I think that the too literal part can also make good songs because once u understand well the meaning of it, the easier it is to be relatable for people

I really want to be a good song writer but the music I write always sound like credit music. I feel so talentless. I feel like no matter what I do I never make something I’m truly proud of.
@R0s3_Th3_S1mp23 күн бұрын
Hey, I know that you can do it. You know why? Because you have the passion. You WANT to, right? So you will, with enough work. But also, you have to leave room for error within your works. You might not feel proud of what your making because you want it to be professional level, and fair enough cause we all do, but remember that it's not going to be straight away. I don't know what type of songs your writing, but don't forget emotion is also a big part of it. Close your eyes, take a deep breath and feel. You can even write a song about the frustrating feeling of not being able to write a song? Start with a key that resonates with what your feeling, (maybe a minor key I dunno) then make up a chord progression or just choose one from that key. The rest will come eventually, be patient with yourself ❤

Cringing at your old songs just shows that youre getting better at this. Just portray everything youre feeling in every way you can imagine and don't be afraid of making errors, at the very end is something that will happen but as soon as you recognize it you just got better.

Keep failing and pick yourself up again. Make 500 songs and in between you will find a light amongst all. But we dont keep tracking so you keep making until you love music lol. If you changing gsmes then you would figure out from a start there with your vision definition.

No, for the longest time, I’ve had made literal lyrics a theme for myself, but they don’t sound bad, because I think of how I placed them, so it kinda does sound like a poem, idk. I lack predictably, I think, so I think that’s good. And I, 100%, am certain that i lack depth, trust me, I’m fucking petty with these lyrics, so idk
