You nailed it! People need to only buy and store the food they will ACTUALLY eat. With that being said, that eliminates ALL the commercial brand companies prep meal entrees. Times are going to be rough, don’t make it harder by have horrible non edible foods. Calories don’t matter!!!!! NUTRITION DOES. Only buy ingredients and then you can make quality meals. Freeze dry your own or buy the freeze dried ingredients from quality companies. See which ones use pesticides on their fruits/vegetables and hormones and fillers in their chicken/beef/pork. There are only a few companies that don’t use pesticides and artificial additives/chemicals in their products.

Just got back from Sam's because of your tip about a decent price of Safe Heat. Recently got the Vesta and am now diversifying my heating/cooking ability. Thank you Jonathan and Kylene for your continued great advice. Now is the time to prepare for a power outage in the winter. Brrrrrrr. The products are available, will be gone when the disaster hits. Happy trails!

This past month I have been doing a detailed inventory of what items are where. That is done by room, shelf, box or drawer. It’s so much easier to scan through a page or two to locate something than to do the physical search first. We have also been doing another of what I call preparedness drills. We turn the breaker off to our house and become off-grid. Today is day 4. Loving it.
@dorsiedenny2 ай бұрын
I appreciate the ideas about where to store food preps the most!! That's the most difficult for me to figure out with the space available. Of course there's also the canning supplies, Mason jars lids and rings, pressure canner, steam juicer, and emergency radio flashlights and heat. Where to put it all so it's in order, safe from damage, and easy to get to. Our kids are also now all grown and on their own. But those spaces are now a work from home office, sewing area, and sorting space to finally go through photos and memories to keep.

For the winter power outage, we are trying to figure out how to store more heating oil. New England here and we are not off grid. We only have a 250-gallon capacity for home heating oil. We have added 2 buddy heaters with 5 gallon propane tanks and adapters, 3 cords of wood for a fireplace if needed, and ways to seal off rooms to conserve heat. How can we store more heating oil, or can we?

That is a really tough one. It sounds like you are doing great! Always be safe! Think outside the box ... what are your "real" options? Different fuel source? Different safe storage locations. Staying warm without fuel?

Lol, I just bought canned lima beans for the first time ever to use on a salad. I forgot that I really like limas, but I've only had them from frozen before now. I'm going to start keeping just a couple, not a lot. And not for long-term due to needing extra preparation like kidney beans do.

I don’t have “winter power outage” preps to do, living here on the surface of the sun in Florida, but I do have hurricane power outage preps. Speaking of which, we have one on the way right now and I’m happy to say the things I have to do are thankfully minimal. I prep in June (start of hurricane season) so that for the rest of the season I don’t have to panic prep. I have to bring all outdoor things indoors, and that’s it. At the end of the season (November) I begin drinking the stored water and then replenish as I empty each container. Not that prepping ever ends, it’s just that I’m happy to say I don’t have a lot to do any longer. And in case anyone is wondering, it’s taken many years to get to this point on a very limited income, so please start where you are and even with a painfully small budget you can do it, one thing at a time. Please say a prayer that the hurricane misses us. I’m in a mobile home so I’m also ready to leave if necessary (and I’m hoping it’s not necessary).

I live in the Florida Panhandle 60 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. We have frequent hurricanes. Power outages become frequent. Generators only for fridge, etc. My question is - can you seal mylar bags with a dry, flat iron heated on a grill, gas stove, or fire? Will that seal hold as well as using an electric flat iron or sealer?
@TheProvidentPrepper2 ай бұрын
I don't know. I think the biggest problem would be getting it too hot and completely melting the Mylar. Try it and let me know :)

Bought a hybrid light flashlight. It’s all charged up and in my office window. We have an Iwatani burner and enough fuel. Also a thrifted brand new fondue pot. What we would lack is heat. We are in the northeast. We are retired and can’t maneuver a generator. We are in a condo community and on a tiny plot of land. So nowhere to store propane. A gas generator using our natural gas is around $8,000. Not doable. So this is what bothers me. Got lots of layers and blankets. But sometimes you have to do more than sit bundled up.
