3 months of Japanese: My first conversations | Vlog #12

I started practicing conversations for the first time this week. Even though I’m not really ready for that, I decided to dive in. “Knowing” a bunch of words does not mean you can speak a language. They’re separate skills, and I wanted to start training the speaking skill as soon as possible, even though I’m still missing a ton of the vocabulary and grammar necessary to keep up a conversation.
This has been a great exercise because it quickly exposed all of my weaknesses. I can now see exactly what words I couldn’t understand, as well as which ideas I wanted to express, but couldn’t. Now, I’ll use those as starting points for what to learn next.

すごい！ You say "um, uh" a lot which is of course natural in conversation but you could replace these with the Japanese equivalents, "ano" (あの) and "etto" (えっと) to make your conversation seem more natural. Good luck with your studies!

true. I was kind of irritated by the um's lol, but I must remember that I was there as well:) I still do those things, because I'm not a japanese genius. but I would throw in some "nanka".. and instead of "hai", maybe you could say some "soudesu" or "ah, wakarimasu" for these two things, especially with the wakarimasu.. it shows that youre really listening, or youre understanding something. saying "hai" could make them think like, oh this guy has no idea what I'm talking about. hai's are not bad, but its good to use a variety so they know youre paying attention, and also some things require a "yes" response, and others deserve an "I understand" response! 分かりますか？：）頑張って！

I've taken half a dozen italki tutoring sessions. I keep forgetting to record them. I have wanted to do a freestyle session like this. But they have either been structured classes( the tutor's teaching style), or very early on it turned into a mini lesson, which were all good, but I almost wish they had let me struggle a bit more so I could focus on keeping up the conversation, rather learning specific lessons. I've started a couple sessions with the intention to build my speaking confidence spent half of the time practicing and then leaving with "homework " like counting various items, telling time using minutes or something else (important , yet not relevant at the moment).

This is amazing. I visited Tokyo last March and started learning some basic words and grammar three months before the trip. It proved its worth when I had to talk with the taxi driver to tell him where my rented room was.

He translated it as movie, but I think we have a distinct difference in what we consider movies (i.e. big budget films) and videos. My instructors have told me that 映画 is what we'd think of as a cinema type film, and 動画 is more akin to videos (e.g. KZbin videos). In practice this seems to be the case. Nice to see the fruits of your efforts thus far. It definitely seems like your flashcard study is paying off. Looking forward to more updates like this one.

You are farther than me for sure. I am maybe 3 weeks in. I could understand, and or recognize some words there. I have a small head start. I studied it for a little while in HS. So, I remembered pronunciation and some words. I forgot most though. I am starting over for the most part. Can't wait till I get to your progress level. Seems like once you can kind of hold your own in a conversation, it would snowball from there.

My first conversation I was so nervous and stuff that I got a stitch in my stomach just from sitting in my computer chair and forgot that I can make conversation by asking questions that I knew how to use.

Lol this reminds me of when i was first learning japanese, i would just constantly just go "hai hai hai" because it was the only answer i could think of that i knew it was 100% gonna make sense lol

pretty impressive for 3 months, at least vocab wise. One thing to note is at the end you say you are bad at something. This isn't わるい　as you'd expect, its へた（下手）. As in 日本語が下手です　（(I'm) bad at japanese)). The opposite of this is じょうず　（上手）which you can hear him say earlier in the video.

Ok i just watched a little more of this video. Your tutor really wasn't doing you many favors as he didn't really simplify his Japanese for your benefit as a beginner. For example, he heard you say ビデオ and he understood but he chooses to use the more natural word 動画 without explaining, yeah ビデオ is a word but 動画 is a more natural word for video. He also, switches into casual speech sometimes, which is actually more confusing to beginners than speaking in polite form. In Japan, kids learn plain form first then learn polite form, but for almost all Japanese learning material for native English speakers, its polite form first with the polite conjugations then you learn plain form. Maybe its because your pronunciation is pretty good compared to a lot of Japanese learners he thought you were more advanced but you may actually get more help from speaking to a tutor who's not native Japanese in the beginning who understands these things. There's a guy, Benjiro on italki who seems pretty good for beginners, he has a youtube channel.

Jiraphan Detchokul I've been taking lessons with teachers on iTalki. I prefer to pay a little bit and speak the whole time in Japanese, rather than do free conversation exchanges that are half in English and half in Japanese.
