I’ve had my 2020 Marin Rift Zone 2 for about 3 months now. There’s a lot of thing I like about it. There are also some things I don’t like. There are some things, like the SRAM SX Eagle drivetrain and the Vee Tire Flow Snap tires, that I thought would make it better than the Rift Zone 1. Now I’m thinking maybe that’s not the case. Watch me battle the gnats as I go over all of it.
UPDATE: The Vee Tire Flow Snaps are actually only 1043.5g each. Still slow rolling though due to the tread pattern and lack of a center row of knobs.

I just ordered a 2022 rift zone 1 and I will get it by the 12th. Looking forward to it, as I have been a cross country racer for years, but have only ridden hardtails. I agree. The Riffy really is a bike you would buy because of it’s geo numbers. For less than the price of the frame of like a SC Tallboy or Norco Optic you get a complete bike you could just ride from the start with even more upfront geometry. But really the speced parts, even on the highest level Rift Zone 3, don’t do the bikes intended use justice. Especially the wheel set and front forks. For anyone who has the basic skills to install and adjust parts, ideally bought on discount or used, the Riffy 1 is the best deal. We have two in our shop and I’m really tempted to order one for myself. Get any working dropper (brand x like you mentioned) and then really spend some money for high quality wheel set, Stans Arch or Flow or build one yourself with I9 or Hope Hubs, and it’s really crying for something like a RS Pike or Cane Creek Helm Air in the front. You’ll end up spending more than for the RZ2 but still less than the RZ3 and it should be a blast!

Interesting hearing your thoughts on the rift zone2 . I just bought a rift zone 1 and i hear you on the recon fork, very stinky and i also run lower pressure then i normally would. The Vee Tee Crown Gems are fast rolling but traction in wet conditions is limited. The Deore drivetrain is alittle glitchy aswell id say from my experience. Have since put a dropper on riftzone1 and overall pretty impressed with the bike as a whole for the price. This riftzone is my short travel bike for smaller trail systems, as i also have a GT Force Enduro bike that i used at mtb parks in my area. Anyways enjoyed watching the video and just thought i comment my experience with the riftzone1 as you were comparing in the video

Thanks for your comments. Basically exactly what I was getting at. You have a solid bike for a little less money. That’s strange about the tires though, Marins site says wire bead on the crown gems. Maybe they have changed something or had to substitute better ones at some point. Rims are tubeless ready though for sure. And I’m sure it’s a bit annoying for you, but it kind of makes me feel better to know that the Deore drivetrain isn’t perfect either.

@@downtoridemtb I'm curious to know which part broke too. I have the RZ3 in size L and ride at about 230 lbs and have been hammering enduro grade trails with lighter rubber and the bike has been a tank. No lack of confidence in the sturdiness of this rig. My bike was making similar sounds and I was going to have shop diagnose it. But now I'll see if just was bar/stem grit as it definitely was coming from that area. Curious if you ever considered the RZ3? I got my dealer down to 2200. The fork has been great (Bomber Z2) as has the Fox DPS shock. Bigger front rotor (203) and better brake. SLX drivetrain has been awesome. Used to riding GX Eagle and it's right there. Swapped tires for Bontrager XR3/SE4 and bike weighs in at 32 pounds. The tires are actually holding up suprisingly well out here in SoCal. But we've had some good dirt. Now comes the dry and loos condition. Bontragers definitely hold their own in toughness and lightness combo. Roll a bit differently but very predictable

I have a 2019 Rift Zone 3 and I love it. I agree the stock tires, while very fast rolling, aren't really great for the trails here in CO. So, my first upgrade was some Maxxis rubber and tubeless conversion. I think I might be riding Marin for a long time and have an eye on the new Hawk Hill since I have progressed enough to the point that a little more than 120mm of travel is desired. It says right on the bike that these are "Made for Fun" and I think they nailed it at a great price point. I've followed people on their $7K Santa Cruz's and many times have beaten them up and down the trails. I am a pretty aggressive rider and even with the shorter travel, I don't think this bike will ever leave my quiver. On that note...I think the geometry of the Rift Zone, combined with the single pivot rear end, make a lockout virtually useless. I've done some long climbs (1700-2000 ft) without the lockout on and was surprised at how capable it is.
@downtoridemtb
@downtoridemtb 3 жыл бұрын
I’m guessing you meant the Alpine Trail because the Hawk Hill - now called Rift Zone 27.5 - is only 130/120mm travel. If so, yeah that thing looks nice! Great video! Because of your original video I decided to go with the rift zone 1 because I planned on upgrading and adding my own parts and wanted the blue frame. However, if someone asked me on what bike to buy I would say to get the Canyon Neuron AL 6.0 SL for $2k or on sale right now for $1,600. But I really wanted the Marin purely for sentimental attachment to the brand and its history. Rift Zone 1 probably does as you think a better job of shifting in the drivetrain, I ride fairly hard, (I live down in Charlotte) and about a month ago I smashed the derailed on rock and took the entire paint of the side of it and the thing has still shifted perfectly since then. I ended up going with the Fox transfer dropper for $300 given it being the highest quality and slapped on an unused 2019 Fox float DPS performance shock that I found for $150 online (same shock used on the Rift Zone 3) and the shock is perfect for the bike. So for effectly the same price as the Rift Zone 2 you can get a kickass dropper and shock for the same price, however you give up the 12 speed drivetrain. So far I have done: carbon handlebar, fox dps shock, wtb rims, i9 101 rear hub, wtb rims, Trail Boss 2.4 front and rear, sram gx cranks Definitely, have put more money into it, but I wanted specific parts on the bike so I went with the Rift Zone 1.

Thanks! The blue frame is nice. That Canyon Neuron looks solid too. It’s one of the few bikes that I still wonder about, like hmm maybe I should have got that instead. Grass is always greener on the other side mentality. What you have done with upgrading the RZ1 is exactly what I was talking about. You can get more for the same cost if you do it right and you’re fine spending the time tracking down and swapping parts.

Andrew, on the RZ1 when you got new wheels did you have to get new dropouts or adapters? I’m doing the same thing, I ordered the RZ1 at the end of March and am just waiting for it to arrive. In the mean time I’ve already purchased a seam nx drivetrain, dropper post, and I have Shimano slx brakes to swap onto it as well. I’m gonna wait until i kill the rear shock before replacing it, but I’ve been looking at getting some halo wheels and saw that the RZ1 has a QR axel that can be converted to 148 TA, just wondering how the conversion actually works.
@ButerFiv
@ButerFiv 4 жыл бұрын
@@jacobgodfrey4447 It's very easy. There is no adaptor or dropout needed to convert it. All you have to do is remove this small piece that comes on the bike. Imagine a standard 12x148 axel, how it has threads on it that fit a 12mm threaded hole. Essentially the RZ1 comes with a small metal adaptor that screws into that 12mm thread to make it a 9mm thread. All you have to do is unscrew that piece and it becomes your standard 12x148. Hard to explain but very easy. You could do it by hand, no tool required. I highly recommend on changing out that rear wheel if you plan on ridding hard. It makes the bike feel more put together having that extra stiffness in the rear.

Some helpful tips I immediately put volume spacers in my rear shock. U can fit up to 4 and I have my maced out (it's my mini enduro bike) but for starters try the knar dog. It's super simple to install and u will notice pedal bob way less. Second u can upgrade to gx cranks and a sram dub bb for fairly cheap and save a ton of weight . 3rd ditch thos heavy wtb tires. I have a maxxis high roller in the front and a maxxis aggressor in the rear 2.5 wt( normal eco casing) and both tires still weigh under 900 grams and roll faster than your wtb. I would do all thos to start and u will notice your bike transformed for under 300 dollars. I also went ahead and did some bardering lol and got some stans arch wheelset and a xx1 cassette (dirt cheap) and insane difference with rolling weight. And lastly I got a used front rockshox pike of ebay. I have roughly 3500 into and if I could do it over I'd probably go with something different. But it definitely helped so much. I wouldn't go getting a wheelset and a fork but I do suggest swapping the cranks and bb out getting lighter and faster rolling tires and especially tokens for rear shock

Was relieved that the clunky shifting I experienced in my driveway went away pretty quickly w/some tweaking to barrel adjuster and just from putting some miles on to work everything together. Coming from a Deore 10-spd, I was able to appreciate the added gear range. No way I'll ever need more than 12-spd though and I actually think that 11-spd might be the sweet spot as far as I'm concerned. I agree w/your assessment on the weight, it is fairly heavy but that said, it is still faster than my HH1 ever was- even with the 'Slow-Snap' out front.(I ended up swapping out to a Maxxis High Roller 2.3 at the rear which is still gets a ton of grip but rolls a little faster) I turned in my best time on the B trail w/out even really trying. I was pleasantly surprised at how I was able to climb with it. Video reviews tended to call it a crappy climber and maybe it is for really extended ones but thankfully, I don't do those. I was able to get things dialed just right. I think that is in large part due to the better Fox rear shock than my HH1 had (X-Fusion) combined with the bigger 29" wheels which once rolling, tend to keep forward momentum better. On the topic of those wheels, they are near silent- a negative in my book as I am among those who prefer noisy hubs. Similar to exhaust pipes on a motorcycle, I guess. Anyway, my plan is to keep the current stock wheelset w/trail tires for the fall/winter months and next spring put on some aftermarket wheels w/some xc tires to really fly around the local trails. One last little niggle, I had a couple of issues with the paint right off the bat. When I loosened seat clamp to adjust saddle position, I had a couple of paint flakes fall off the seat tube, leaving some unsightly areas around top of seat tube.- Perhaps they over-torqued it at the shop. At least the collar covers that area up but doesn't inspire confidence about the paint everywhere else. Seat clamp was also stripped at the bolt and I had to find another from my parts bin. One other blemish was noted near the rear shock which is probably the result of it taking a knock during assembly at GovVelo. Not the worst thing ever as it's a mountain bike but a little sucky to already have two blemished areas during unboxing. My first experience buying complete bike online so perhaps that goes with the territory. They'll probably send me some touch up paint or something. Bike performed well. I sized down to medium at 5'10" and aside from wanting to maybe lengthen the stem to 40mm (would like to be a little more stretched than I was today) and move one of the spacers from above to below stem to raise stack height, I think it is pretty dialed in for me. Already not as cramped as I was on the HH thanks to the longer reach on the RZ. Brakes were good as was the Marzocchi fork. Dropper works great- I've put X-Fusion Manic on other bikes with good results. Grips were fine, as you mentioned, but mainly out of a desire to add a little more color up there, I'm going to pop some orange Ergon GE1's on. I will also be putting a true SLX rear cassette and chain on once I get new wheelset w/legit Micro-Spline rear hub. All that should lighten things up a bit. The Sunrace that comes w/stock wheels (and apparently a standard Shimano driver) will do for now though.

Glad all went well on the first ride! I’m right there with you that a 10 or 11 speed would be just as good for most trails. I’m actually thinking about getting the Microshift Advent X for mine in the coming months. Cheap, wide range, lightweight and will work with my standard free hub body. Interesting that yours being a 2021 RZ3 doesn’t come with the microspline hub since the 2021 RZ2 does. How many clicks do you hear if you rotate the wheel around 1 complete revolution?
@jeremydwyer2724
@jeremydwyer2724 3 жыл бұрын
@@downtoridemtb I could be wrong about that but I was under the impression that the Sunrace cassette found on the stock wheels was meant to go on standard Shimano freehub, not Micro Spline. Marin is known to do some jerry-rig solutions on the back wheel. My HH1 had a QR rear hub w/proprietary spacers added to make it fit into through axle frame. When I upgraded to Race Face Aeffect wheels on that one and made it a true thru axle, it was like adding Nitrous- or at least produced an equivalent placebo effect. Anyway, to answer your question, 15 clicks. My hardtail is also a 29er so I think my next investment will be in a quality set of wheels from Industry Nine out of NC. Between the two bikes(mainly this Marin), I'm sure I'll get sufficient use from them. I also just pony'd up for a set of PNW Range bars and 40mm stem. I still felt a tad cramped on size medium at 5'10" with stock bars and stem. Made similar mods to my old HH and that worked out great. By this time next week, should have it just the way I want it.

Thanks, yeah it’s all real stuff. No sugar coating. Also thanks for pointing that out about the Crown Gems. They are wire bead (at least according to specs) so they aren’t “intended” to be tubeless but with some wire bead tires you can still do it. So that is awesome that you are able to do it successfully! Makes me like them even more and makes that RZ1 an even better value.

I'm still on the stock vee tires and yes they are heavy and will be replaced when they're worn out. Same experience with the SX mech not dropping down from the 50t. Constantly adjusting cable barrel. It will be replaced with an NX mech along the way. I was pleasantly surprised with the Recon fork and I have read somewhere that low end rock shox all perform a little differently depending on what way the wind is blowing. Lol. Nice review, I was the same, looking for a trail bike with a 2k budget and now after owning it for 6 months my thoughts on it are very similar to yours. Having said that though, no regrets and it is fantastic fun. Overall a great bike for the money, just gotta spend a little to get it how you want it.

I’d suggest swapping out the rear tire even if it isn’t worn out. The stock one is pretty decent for a front tire though and I recently weighed mine and it’s actually just under 1050g. As for the drivetrain, I was thinking about going full GX. Now I’m actually looking at the Microshift Advent X. 10 speed 11-48t that weighs less than GX and is like half the price, maybe even less than half. Pretty enticing.

Well after again setting up the mechanical limits on the SX mech and having yet another shift causing the chain to go over the top I junked it and installed a GX shifter and mech. Absolute night and day, finally got an eagle 12 set up that works as intended. I think either the limit screws would move on the SX or their is too much flex in the plastic body when shifting under load.

Torn between GX or going a totally different direction with the Microshift Advent X.

I never bottomed it out even with my previous lower settings but the sag was too much and I was getting too many pedal strikes. I really liked the cushier feeling at the back though but I guess that is just personal preference. I’m about 180lbs. Can you do me a favor and weigh your bike? Polygon bikes are good and there is a lot of evidence that they are built in the same factory as Marin. The Motobecane bikes offer a lot in terms of higher spec components. I considered both, and also the Vitus Mythique which is a nice package. What it came down to for me was wanting something that had more local shop support for parts or warranty issues. Polygon has only one online US distributor. Motobecane is only sold through Bikes Direct. Vitus is only sold through Chain Reaction Cycles in the UK. Not to knock any of them though because if you look at specs only, they are generally more appealing than the Rift Zone. You may want to narrow things down based on the trails in your area and how much travel you need and/or want.

@downtoridemtb

Aside from the weight and the absolute crap rear hub... second Marin one failed so I upgraded... I love it. I dropped some weight with a bb and crank upgrade. I actually got to ride a buddies 2019 Ibis Ripmo AF last week. The rear shock felt more plush and it pedaled surprising well for having Assegi tires. Weight was comparable. GX drivetrain felt imprecise although that could have just been bad setup. Sram guide brakes were weird. It was like no braking through the motion then immediate hard braking. Overall my Marin just felt more solid. But the biggest surprising factor is that the Ripmo felt like it had a shorter wheel base and like the head tube angle was steeper or just that you were closer to the front wheel. Both bikes were large frame size. I think before you jump ship you should at least try to ride those other bikes because expectation was far different than reality for me.

Yeah I don’t plan on upgrading until later in the year. The weight in the RZ is tough. I upgraded to better rolling tires and I installed a go derailleur (enormous improvement from the sx). I want to lighten this bike up, any other suggestions? Cranks and BB?
@downtoridemtb
@downtoridemtb 3 жыл бұрын
@@ramoer yeah cranks and BB are probably the most bang for your buck weight savings. The powerspline BB is so heavy. I went with Truativ Descendant cranks which are the same as Sram GX and a Dub bottom bracket. Approx 0.7lbs lighter. Short of going carbon, they are about the lightest you’ll find. Lighter than anything FSA or RaceFace that I looked at. The cassette is also heavy. GX will save a bit but means you’ll need a Sram XD driver hub. I swapped seats for a WTB volt for comfort but I could tell it was a little lighter just by holding it. Only other thing I’m thinking, but I don’t know for sure, is that the dropper post could be on the heavy side. Cheap ones usually are.

What happened when the rear hub failed? I had several issues with the bike but the worst one was something loosened in the rear hub that caused the axle to come out. Counterclockwise will move it closer. It’s all based on the measurement from the top derailleur jockey wheel to the biggest gear. So shift into the biggest gear first. SRAM recommends a 15mm gap but less seems better for me. I’ve probably got 8mm or so. Keep in mind that on a full suspension bike this gap will grow as the rear shock gets into its natural sag position. You’ll also probably need to adjust the barrel adjuster after doing this.

I was incorrect on the tire weight. They are closer to 1050g each. Still on the heavy side but not terrible. Tread pattern still makes them slow though. Check out my latest video, the tires in that video made a huge difference to how the bike rides. The other biggest contributor to the weight is the SX Eagle drivetrain. Everything about it is heavy compared to a GX Eagle for example. Problem is, most bikes in this price range will have that same drivetrain.

i also had a hub fail on my rift zone 1. its a terrible bike for alot of reasons: no boost axle at the back, grips are garbage after 10 months of riding, very weak brakes, the cranks have a very weird chainring fit, and you have to dig deep in the internet for finding the right kind of chainring, for sreet riding you always wish for a bigger chainring, the cable routing is HORRIBLE, because the little plastic parts which the cable goes through on the frame are ripped apart after 5 months of riding, the drivetrain shifts really bad, because it doesnt have a shimano hyperglide chain, the sunrace casette wears pretty fast, the xfusion o2 pro has alot of stiction + no lockout, everything is heavy and manifactured with low quality and i have seen a broken rift zone 1 with my own eyes. marin also doesnt have a good cutomer service. i would never buy a marin again.

That sucks that you’ve had such a bad experience with them. At the time of filming I didn’t realize the RZ1 had that non boost hub with spacers to fit the boost frame. So silly to save a few bucks. I mean you can only expect so much from just about the cheapest full suspension bike on the market though. One tip on those brakes is to move them in so you’re grabbing exactly at the end of the levers. Way more power that way. I moved mine onboard of the shifter and dropper lever to accomplish that.
