I'm also a fan of the abstract strategy reviews by either Tom or Zee, but both of you guys together makes them all the better! 👍

Thank you for these reviews! I love these combined reviews from two of you.

When someone does something clever, the opponent has to say “ah, donuts!”

I just realized that DONUTS is INSERT with a new theme. Crazy how much difference a tiny change to the theme makes in this case.

Not sure what game you were comparing Donuts to, but Sobek: 2 Players also uses the same system.

I'm confused about Bossa. If I use one tile to get the 2 column (using a tile with 2 pips), that means I must use either zero tiles (impossible) or two tiles to build the 1 column. Is there a BLANK tile? Because, it would be impossible to build the 1 column with 2 tiles otherwise...I think.

You could use one tile that has six black pips and another tile with one white pip, or vice versa

Before Tom mentioned it I was going to leave a comment saying Donuts looks like it could have been in the GIPF series if it had that aesthetic treatment. I love abstracts and this one looks great.
@JorWat257 ай бұрын
There's an earlier version called INSERT which is a lot more GIPF-esque, being just wooden rings and squares with lines in them.

Looking at Donuts, feels like Cathala took the main mechanism of Sobek:Duel and twisting it a bit into a simple abstract game. I might actually like this one more, Sobek: Duel is a fun game, but it has a few too many bells and whistles for me.

I think it's the other way around. There's a designer diary on BGG for Sobek: 2 Players where Bruno says he based it on INSERT (the original version of Donuts).

"From this point, we started to work on a drafting system. At the time, I had just finished development on INSERT, and since I really, really loved how the board constrained players, Seb and I wondered whether it would be possible to do something similar to address our problem with Sobek."

@@JorWat25 Oh, that does make a lot of sense. Thank you for the insight. :)

I listened to a designer podcast episode a few years back where Cathala said one of his favorite games from someone else was Gyges, so I think he's being genuine with favoriting his personal game Donuts.

For me, most abstract games are simply a 6. Don't have to play it, it's just meh for almost all of them.
