I’m the aquarium hobby it’s referred to as “multi-tank syndrome” or MTS. People start out with 1 aquarium and within a few months they have 5. I think people are just as interested in setting up enclosures as they are the animal.

Again a great topic that should be talked about more! The way I stop myself from getting too many animals is to never ever compromise the care. If I cant afford the best care (money, time or space-wise), I don't get the animal. Also on the topic of racks, I don't think they are inherently bad, but most of the time they are used in a bad way. If you have a purely terrestrial or even fossorial snake and you give it the floorspace it needs, they will do great. The sad thing about racks is that often people see them as excuses to keep as many snakes in as small of a space as possible because "that is how you're supposed to use rack systems".

this is kinda old, but I just wanted to throw in my two cents about racks because I used to be pretty against them. I moved 3,000 miles and switched to using racks (from fully decorated 4x2 zens) for my ball pythons during all the upheaval and they are doing super well. I initially was opposed to the idea, but I honestly might keep them in racks for the foreseeable future. Partially to save space, but mostly because I've had no refused meals since moving them in, amazing sheds, and zero humidity issues--which is a huge deal because I moved to the desert. Plus, one of my snakes kept finding ways to hurt himself in the zen (he is an actual wizard at trying to squeeze through things he definitely can't fit in, including the screen top, between the doors, the substrate shield, the little stopper thing blocking the hole in the back, etc.), which hasn't happened in the racks. I honestly might just get a bigger rack tub-wise--I have a V-70 from vision cages but I think a V-180 is more appropriate, even though V-70 was recommended for ball pythons (it works for now because two of my pythons are babies and the other is an old man who likes to be out, so I just take him out to do his exploring)--when everything settles down. Also anyone who thinks leopard geckos aren't active just needs to spend the night in the room with theirs and they will learn. I have woken up at all kinds of weird hours thanks to them lol

Agreed! I have snakes both in large enclosures and in appropriately sized tubs in racks. Snakes that used to go on feeding strikes in enclosures with plenty of hides and clutter all eat GREAT in the racks. This anti-rack attitude is very uninformed. Without racks there'd be no breeders to sell us reptiles!

Such an important topic and so taboo. I see so many poor animals constantly being abandoned and neglected because they are no longer shiny and new or because people get addicted and taken in too many. Thank you for bringing this subject up. And just have to say your energy is beautiful 🙏🏼✨ thank you for all you do Tricia

I definitely have thing for Knob-tailed Geckos. Their not very interactive nor a great display pet but there's something about their quirky looks and bright colours that really appeals to me. So far I have three and plan to get more but I've limited myself to only buying one per year.

I got my first crested gecko last summer, and I can see having a bunch of them very easily, except I live in an area that gets pretty warm in the summers, and cresties don't handle heat too well. It's a lot easier to manage one of them if I have an a/c outage, than a whole bunch. I have quite a few animals myself, but I definitely know my limits, and use technology to help care for them.

Great video. For me it's bullsnakes. When I was first getting into snakes I wanted ONE as my only pet snake. I reached out to a few breeders and one got back to me about a male they had available in the morph I wanted. LITERALLY ONE HOUR LATER... another breeder I had messaged got back to me that the only bullsnake they had available was a female in the morph I wanted. And I couldn't help it. Even though I'd had no intention of breeding at the time, I suddenly had the possibility to get a potential breeding pair. The kicker was that "female" turned out to be male. The breeder felt really bad and promised a good deal on a powerhouse female the next year, and they made good on that deal. They probed and popped her on Zoom for me so I could see she was a definite female. Absolute gorgeous genetic powerhouse for almost half price. .... But then of course I had a 2.1 trio, and decided I needed at least one more female to make it an even 2.2 pairing. Which I did. 😅 So now I'm enjoying my 4 bullsnakes as I raise them up. It'll be a while before I breed since the females are younger than the males. So I'm just loving on my 4 babies in the meantime.

My local rescue is overrun with leopard geckos and ball pythons. If you wanna get into breeding get into animals that aren't oversaturated

I almost didn’t click because I saw the number three; and KZbin has it set up so if someone does two or more videos, it comes up as that many videos on the channel; and the only reason I clicked is because I saw I hadn’t clicked on any reptile ones yet and was surprised that it’s about three different reptiles instead of three videos.

I am really surprised that Bearded Dragons didn't make your top 3 reptile list. I believe they are as common as the Ball Pythons and Leopard Geckos. But then everybody probably has there top 3 favorite Addicting reptiles. Thanks for sharing, Just watched your video on Instagram with Zen Habitats about Chameleons. I have been wanting to get a Chameleon for so long, but afraid to take that plunge due to already having 3 4x2 setups and don't really have the space or time to spend at the moment.

Why does everyone else say bigger enclosures make cresties uncomfortable and its better to have them in smaller ? I really like your points but just wondering why 30+ "experts" claim the opposite ?
@reptiliangarden
@reptiliangarden 2 жыл бұрын
For cresties it depends on the individual. Some of them have a hard time adjusting to larger setups and have a hard time finding their food. The best way to make sure they can feel safe in a new big environment is to fill it out with a lot of hiding places and things to climb on!
@TaleRavenTarot

Yep, the "gotta catch em all" attitude where people want animals that look cool and are expensive but they don't want to provide proper care and enrichment is a really bad and all-too-common element in the community. The "Meet all my hundreds of pets" videos feed into this and normalize having more pets than most people can care for. I think you've always handled this really well, and been upfront about care requirements, but some people don't. It really can be an addiction.
