I get vibration in my 5series from front left, halfords say coil overs and shock absorbers ans tyres need changing

That's halfords for you, go to an independent tyre company and let them know the problem, they normally more honest and a lot cheaper. The wheel may need balancing, wheel balancing normally starts to shake the steering wheel at around 60 mph, if the steering shakes continuously at any speed you could have a warped tyre or buckled wheel. Sounds to me that if you can feel the side its coming from its more likely to be a twisted tyre/buckled wheel rather than wheel balancing. Shockers are probably fine.

Just another mention, some alloy wheels have a plastic spigot on the inside of the center of the wheel that centers the wheel up to the hub of the car, if any of these are missing these can also cause vibration. These are all the cheapest options anyway, hope they help.
