The 3 most important equipment for surviving a snowstorm on a fall hiking trip.
I ended up trapped in a tent in a snowstorm in Sarek National Park in end of September and I started to think about what is my most valuable gear for this kind of trekking tour.
If you have been wet, cold and exposed to tough weather for a while then you start to thinking, what is the most important gear in my backpack? Is it the high end super mega hip belt on my backpack or the ultralight titanium spoon? Quite fast you understand that the outdoor gear you really need is the gear that keeps you warm, dry and give you shelter from harsh weather. The essential gear that keeps you alive. Clothes, sleeping system and the tent.
This is no survival equipment or survival training. It’s just a normal hiking trip in the end of the season where the summer suddenly turns over to winter…

With sleeping, I think just as important is a good sleeping pad to protect from the cold coming from below. I've had miserable cold, shivery nights in the mountains sleeping on an EVA foam pad. I've now invested in a X-Threm, and now sleep toasty.

Matti! You survived. I do think the sleeping pad is important. I brought a Nemo Tensor Alpine sleeping pad plus one of those foam pads and I really think it made a huge difference. Absolutely no cold from underneath. Also the goose down Zpacks booties and hood really changed how warm I am in the tent in cold weather. but i really regret not bringing a wool layer to sleep in. I totally underestimated how cold it would get in Sarek!! So you’re 100% right on the wool.

A good strong tent, sleeping bag, mattress, food and cooking system, sources of fire, water, medical kit, and a good backpack to carry it all, are essential to any multi-day outing.

I suspect that when you said sleeping bag you meant 'system' - the insulation underneath is as or more important as the bag itself. Loving your channel. I'm so tempted to book a weeks guided walk with you guys

I consider my inflatable air mattress to be "essential"; something to keep me insulated from the cold/rocky ground. Thermarest XTherm with R6.9 rating has a bullet proof 70D ground side material & has never leaked during the night. Agreed! Shelter & a quality Sleeping bag is essential. Western Mountaineering Antelope (5ºF) is is sufficient where I overnight. Warm regards from Reno, Nevada U.S.A.

Yes you need to be able to isolate from the ground or camp where there is a lot of vegetation. Sometimes I use my backpack, clothes etc for isolation if it’s necessary. /Matti

Hi Matti, in August I have been in the fjell at Lappenporta: Storm and gust of wind up to 78kmh (data from weather forecast) inkluding thunderstorm at night. I have been gad, and felt "secure" and comfortable, in my Hilleberg Niak, which I supported with extra rope and mounted those with big stones, as I had no trees to connect in the open fjell. @@JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA Hi Matti, the tent was shakin in the storm, but my tentpeg-stone-combination did not move at all. Niak for me has the advantage that I can keep all luggage inside. ink. walking boots (which I neede at this storm) to get thos out of the rain. The waterproof inside wall (rest is mesh) was high enough to keep the driftig rain outside the inner tent. /Michael

I was looking into buying this tent a year ago, but I was hesitant. Ive always been using Hilleberg tents and ive been in some rough weather. And this video shows perfectly what my concern was, and pitching a tent "på kalfjället" whatever the translation is in english. Ive had the wind do almost 360 degree turns with heavy snow and harsh winds and going outside to turn the tent into the wind every 20-30 mins is not doable for a sustained period of time. Now, does that mean the Big Agnes is a bad tent, not at all, but for my needs and my type of tours, I always carry that 1 extra kg on the tent.

Absolutely agree. Had reservations just like yours when replacing a solid old tunnel tent but I did buy a similar design to Copper Spur. It was a Mont, Australian. Beautiful tent, very well made etc and preferred it to Copper Spur internal dimensions. But in unexpected high winds on exposed mountain just not good enough as when wind from "wrong direction" - ie side - meant it collapsed in. Kept it but also bought solid tunnel tent for mountain tops. Also, personally really don't like inner pitch first tents. Not for winter. In fact very hesitant about them in all but certain good weather/low wind/rain while pitching. When is that?

Matti, can you make a video about the kinds of wool to use, whether merino, boiled wool (the old, thick wool), or some combination of them all. I watched a video recently about animal trappers in Siberia, working in the Taiga, and they had the old school thick wool on for extreme cold.

I have recently bough a slightly used Sea to summit alto tr1 plus that is supposed to be better for wetter and colder conditions, and it has a better floor than the regular, that is a thing that I really like. This is my lighest tent by far and I was thinkin that if there is good way to use ski poles to strenghten the westibules and tensionrifge there might be some potential even in conditions like that, but I don't know and I'm not going to knowingly go out with thus tent to an open space when there is a snow storm, just thinkin if that way there It wouldn't be that crazy idea to use a light tent line that when there is only moderate conditions predicted to the area. Trees are ofcouse a friend of a light tent. Did Your tent survive without any permanent damage from that collapse?

Jag har sett att många gillar de där tälten i fjällmiljö och tyckt att de inte håller måttet för den typ av miljö på pappret. Det ska bli spännande att se din uppföljning.

Det är ju ett fantastiskt tält när man bär det och rent utrymmesmässigt. Jag gillar det väldigt bra. I storm…så har de svagheter helt klart. På nått sätt har det ett berättigande men en ensamtur i Sarek under oktober… Ja då blir det inte Big Agnes. ;-) En försommarvandring i Muddus är nått helt annat. Hur man än vänder o vrider sig så hamnar baken där bak och den är liksom mycket annat delat i minst två halvor. Frågan blir… Ska man ha ett enda tält till allt sitt friluftsliv eller ska man ha 2, 4 eller kanske to 10 olika tält? Vilka användningsområden tänker man sig. Jag har flera tält och Big Agnes Coper Spuur 1 blir kvar. Kanske att jag säljer BA Tigerwall till fördelnför ett Hilleberg Niak eller ett Big Agnes Coper Spuur 2.
