One thing that's always thrown me is that those with cool undertones burn easily, while warms tan easily. Burning is to do with melanin and how dark your skin is. Surely you can have a warm undertone but burn easily as pale warm undertoned people exist?
@Selsmittenxo6 жыл бұрын
Emily Lavis those that are paler and cool toned tend to burn only or burn more than they tan~ even if they went out in the sun for a long whole trying to tan, they'll have a really hard time getting any sort of color other than becoming more pink/red.

I’m a cool undertone and my natural skin tone is darker than it is now, so pale warm can be a thing as well as tan cool. Right now I’m pale cool but I really want to get a tan and I don’t burn.

I am pale warm undertone and also burn easily. I simply wear sunscreen wherever I go ;) My skin actually does not look that yellowish (because it's pale), so a pale neutral foundation matches often better than a too yellowish (and darker) one.

I'm so glad you mentioned the overtones because I believe this is why I have a hard time with my makeup. I believe I have a warm undertone but I have so much redness in my face (overtones)I need a cool undertone foundation because foundation with warm undertones is too much. My coworkers have told me NO on the warm foundation. 🤣

Have you tried a mint correct concealer? This should take the redness out of your skin. Match your foundation to your skin tone not uhdértones or redness. Foundation should blend in at the chin line.

Your advice about testing *warm* colors makes perfect sense! Some people have intense skin tones that merely lack yellow undertones (be they golden or citric), and these folks are typically recognized in a heartbeat as unambiguous "winters". On a similar note, olive skin has a combination of warm and cool undertones, and some variants of "autumn" palettes look rather chilly.

I agree with this 100% when I have gone to purchase foundation the person at make up store will choose a warm undertone and I end up looking darker in my face and never matches my neck, yes I have yellow undertones but I also have pink undertones. So I usually go for the neutral fair undertones and blends right into my skin tone. I have always struggles with this but I think I have figured it out for myself. The vein test shows my veins are green and blue and purple so yeah its weird.
@charachoppel31167 жыл бұрын
About veins. Theory goes blue veins mean cool and green means warm. Have been told my veins are in between, so turquoise. Hair and skinwise I'm warm. But read not so long ago that actually veins can turn out different colors depending on colors you put beside them. Firstly, the skin next to veins makes them a specific color. But if you put blue next to them, the blue is emphased, light green brings out green and a grey swatch makes veins look grey. So, as you say, the vein test is not that reliable.
@Emma-vu3hx5 жыл бұрын
Chara Choppel if you’re warm toned, your skin will have a yellow hue, and when you put yellow, over blue (veins), it will make them appear green. Therefore if you’re warm toned, you will see green veins. If your skin has a pink/red hue, red over blue will look purple, therefore your cool toned. That’s how it works. Your hair has nothing to do with it....

Thank you for this information. I love makeup and have worn makeup since my mid teens years. I have olive skin. But my face has pink and my color intensity is medium. I’m not too light not too dark. I was convinced that yellow undertone foundations were for me until just recently when I began to notice how yellow-orange my skin looks in pictures. It makes me look not right. But I’m not convinced that pink tone foundations are for me. I look ashy when I wear pink toned foundation. However, I never ever wear anything warm next to my face. I do wear red, mostly blue reds but never been able to wear orange or yellow like the ones in the autumn color palette. I gravitate toward cool colors and bright because my eyes are darkest brown and my hair is black. KKW and I share almost the same coloring. I wonder what undertone foundation she wears. I wish makeup companies would make foundation for olive skin that is not too yellow. Watching your videos has helped me to confirm what I had instinctively been doing with the colors in my wardrobe. I am according to your system cool, bright and deep.

I don’t know… I have this innate ability to doubt my tastes… even though I dislike gold jewelry on me, still don’t feel quite sure if I have a cool undertone. My veins are blue, the palm of my hands is super pink, my iris has petals ( which I heard are an indicator of cool undertone ), but my hair is brown, my eyes are brown too. I think I might be a Summer or a Winter, because both have petals. The thing is, my iris has no cloudiness as in Summers ( but it’s petals aren’t dark at the bottom as in Winters). My petals are colored as the rest of my iris, not darker. I think I feel better in Summer colors, but I’m not sure. I don’t know if it’s just that I like the colors on their own or how they complement my skin.

Half of the people insist neutral tones don’t exist, you’re a slightly warm warm or a slightly cool cool. But I agree. My skin is kind of unnaturally paler than it should be (I’m ill and am in the sun as little as possible, since sun exposure can exacerbate my symptoms), but growing up I didn’t burn easily. My illness causes a pink flush on my cheeks and chest, but otherwise I’m not a really peaches and cream look. Pink is too pink and yellow is too yellow. If I had to pick, I’m closer to a cool undertone, but still, nothing I’ve tried in terms of makeup works well for me unless it’s marketed as neutral. Neutrals kind of get the short end of the stick, since half of the channels say it doesn’t exist and the others say “oh just wear whatever.” 😩 It’s like face shape videos where oval is kinda ignored because it’s supposed to be universally flattering.
@MaryYoungblood-xy8vg Жыл бұрын
One myth I can't stand: "if you tan, you must be warm or if you tend to sunburn than you must be cool" Ability to tan vs burn is about melatonin levels not undertones.
@SunflowerSpotlight5 жыл бұрын
The issue with overlooking contrast is a big one I don’t see addressed often enough. I’ve always had to be cognizant of my butterfly rash on my cheeks to counterbalance it, but the color I use for that assesses the redness, not my general undertones. Maybe it’s because I’m unnaturally pale and my skin is more translucent than is considered attractive, but the vein thing actually works well for me. I generally look equally washed out or just odd in pink and yellow foundation, so neutral has always been my go to in terms of makeup. My father has Greek and Italian heritage, while my Mom has a lovely English Rose complexion, and both have a good amount of Cherokee and Cree. So I was always going to be a bit all over the place. Adding in having to stay out of the sun whenever possible because of my health since age 12, that mishmash of inherited tones have kind of been desaturated. I guess knowing that I take after my mother in being able to wear jeweled tones has helped me side with cool over neutral if I had to pick. But it seems it’s at the far end of the scale, because at least when it comes to makeup, cool tones makeup is really not right for me. The only thing I’m confused about is the spring/autumn question, but since I don’t look great in light colors, I must be autumn? The contrast of the deep jeweled tones allows me to look less... sick, picks up on the warmth of my cheeks from my rash just enough to make me look a bit more healthy than the alternatives. Light colors wash me out almost as badly as warm colors.

Having pink on your skin doesn't make you automatically cool, you can be either warm or cool and be pink toned (warm pink tone is known as peach) in that case red hair will look great either way because the red of the hair will armonize with the red content on your skin

Olive is green, the opposite of red. It doesn't matter how light or dark it is, and can be both warm or cool All this overtone stuff is confusing, just stick to undertone (warm vs cool) and olive vs red as the tint of the skin, just like in photo editing, you have temperature and tint

That's what i believe because i know a lot of olive skinned people (i'm one of them) and most of them have clearly warm undertones. Here in Brazil olive skin is very common...

Luis P. Souza I was thrown off by olive being described as cool as well. I have olive skin, and a very yellow undertone. I think temperature might be somewhat of a spectrum? I look healthier in warm colors, but I start to sort of blend in with colors that are too warm... unless I have the chroma all wrong 😕 My hair and eyes and skin all have similar value, but I have a lot of warmth in my hair and eyes. My skin easily will look sallow or greenish if I wear the wrong color. I'm so confused now. 😶
@daniellevinson69757 жыл бұрын
Chara Choppel Many people with olive skin don't look good in "spring" palettes, and some don't even look good in "autumn" palettes. On the other hand, olive is an earthy skin tone and features varying COMBINATIONS of cool and warm. Seasons can overlap, as evidenced by "autumn" palettes that complement olive skin [these being an overlap between "autumn" and "winter", chilly variants of the earth tones that typify the "autumn" color spectrum].
@daniellevinson69757 жыл бұрын
Chara Choppel Then again, I think color analysis systems should include lukewarm seasons... My idea would be designating one warm season ["spring"], two lukewarm seasons ["summer" and "autumn"], and one cool season ["winter"].
@user-wt5if6rx8m6 жыл бұрын
Luis P. Souza I'd say olive skin tone is a middle ground between cool and warm. It's not neutral - in a sense you could use anything from both sides, no. The end of both cool and warm spectrums tend to look bad on olive skin, and this goes for both hues and values - focus on values. To me, everything right in the middle works great. Neither too cool or warm, but mostly, neither too bright or pastel, otherwise olive skin tend to look "ill" and "pale" like a dead body lol That weird yellow-greenish tint undertone, not a lot of pinkness on cheeks or lips. For me, pastel rose gold is a very exception. All of that being said that's why I feel the autumn palette is the dearest when it comes to this skin type, it's the one that contemplates the largest range of "in the middle" colours specially if talking about values and saturation.
