My dad developed AMD in the ‘90’s in his 50’s. He didn’t own a cell phone and seldom used a computer. He was a cigar smoker however and spent most of the day sitting in his car and in the evening on the couch-wasn’t physically active . He went through years of depression due to losing his sight and becoming dependent on my mother for everything. He never would get help to treat his depression and he later developed Alzheimer’s Disease and died of pneumonia 11 years ago. I always thought there was a relationship between the two diseases.

I'm 83 and nearsighted, I can read without glasses but need glasses to see far. I took Lutein 30mg zeaxanthin 6mg for 1 week and started getting retina flashes at night. I stopped taking the supp and the retina flashes stopped. Anecdotal, i know, and maybe I took too much but these are my results of taking this supp. YMMV.

in other words, the cascade of perception was triggered by free radicals, instead of photons. maybe, the efficacy of signal transduction was greatly improved, so much so that other parameters of your physiology such as high oxidative stress for whatever reasons, got perceived. Interesting twist for determining the level of oxidative stress... The dosage of everything in the preparation advertised in this video is too high, approx. by a factor of 3..5. For instance, 1000mcg of B12 is only for a few people, only for a limited time, and only under monitoring.

There are a lot of fraudulent supplement makers. They often do not give you what it says on the label. I use Puritan's Pride for Lutein and Zeaxanthin. Good price and good quality. No, I don't work there, or sell the stuff. If you still get the flashes, then at least you know it really is the Lutein and Zeaxanthin. It is the Wild West out there with supplements. There is a guy that tests these things and makes KZbin videos, and over half the astaxanthin out there was complete fraud, often claiming 10 or 12 mg and giving 0 or 1 mg. Were they using chemical dyes? Who can say what was actually in there?

The presenter tells us that we need to get 2,000 mg of DHA per day everyday, but his own product that he's promoting at the end of the video only has 460 mg of DHA per serving (2 soft gels). He's got so many other different supplements contained in his product that if you try to take more gels to reach that 2000 mg threshold, you'd overload on the other supplements. Why not make a product that provides the recommended dosage of DHA in a single serving? So far, if you're trying to find a product to reach your recommended dosage, it just isn't cost effective, especially if you're using other supplements as well.

@monnoo8221

good story, but there are some glitches. @28:00+ 97% of the omega-3 in the brain is composed of DHA. that's interesting, but much less relevant than the absolute figure: 25% of all fats in the brain are omega3, and such DHA. The brain manages to select DHA from a mixture containing EPA, however, it is much more critical to guarantee the basic supply at the first place. @30:50: the volume of the brain is not related to the amount of DHA relative to ePa, but to the absolute content of DHA in comparison to non-omega3 fats. @32:25 : and the habitual anti-oxidant capacity shall not be missing... no, DHA is NOT a radical scavenger. It is part of the capacity to react to ROS. If he membrane is malfunctioning because of the lack of DHA, the comparison with an individual that receives DHA is pointless. Bad argument. DHA is not a direct free radical scavenger: It doesn't directly neutralize free radicals like vitamin C or E, or the subject matter, Lutein and the other cartenoids. DHA can get oxidised, but then it is toxic. At @37:00 - @38:00 you say it yourself, when talking about Lutein as a protector of DHA against oxidation The point of anti-oxidants is that they readily act as redox partner, neutralizing ROS by donating an electron. DHA can not do that. As a rule of thiumb: someone who applies the ant-oxidant argument to each and everything does not undersand anything about biochemistry... you may update your presentation

He emphasizes "significant," but significant has nothing to do with the size of difference, only the existence of difference. And 500% is not 500 times. It is 5 times. I take 40mg of lutein + zeaxanthin, 40mg of lycopene, and 12mg of astaxanthin. And I get DHA and EPA from salmon oil, salmon, and sardines. I also eat lots of butternut squash and collard greens for other carotenoids.
