We don't need programs to help restore a singer shortage,we need programs to fill in the shortage of great voice teachers.The tradition is being lost,we need to try to capture as much as possible.No teachers, No singers.

Well, Nicolai is Russian, if memory serves. So, I think Levine's point was focused on Italian musicians exclusively. There are success stories from other nations certainly, Gedda being one. I personally think Bergonzi is/was amazing, and Italian as well.

Levine eventually agreed to lower by a whole tone Act II of ‘Otello’ for Domingo. Pretty outrageous.
