On 22 December, 2017 extreme sleeping, wild camping adventurer and author Phoebe Smith set out to sleep the 3 Peaks - the highest mountains in Wales (Snowdon), England (Scafell Pike) and Scotland (Ben Nevis) - by herself on three consecutive nights.
She'd decided to give up her Christmas - no tree, no dinner, no bad TV and no time with the family. Instead choosing to Sleep the 3 Peaks to raise money for the homeless charity Centrepoint. She wanted to wake up on Christmas Day alone on the summit of the highest mountain in the UK so she could literally take the issue of homelessness to new heights.
Phoebe loves sleeping in wild places, but is very aware that she's privileged enough to do this for fun whereas many young people don't get the choice. Up to 16,000 people between 16-25 will be at risk of homelessness over Christmas through no fault of their own and during the festive season it's all too easy to get caught up in our own lives and forget these people. She hoped to change that. By giving up her Christmas she aimed to raise money to help young people get the choice to sleep rough for fun rather than necessity. Even if her actions helped just one person she decided it would be worth sacrificing the roast!
She ended up raising over £5,000 for the charity (over £7,000 including GiftAid) which is still increasing. Thank you all so much for your help and generous donations and messages of encouragement - Phoebe was utterly overwhelmed by everyone's kindness. And a big thank you also to Field Candy for providing the tent, Ordnance Survey for sending the maps and Visit Scotland for the wonderful hipflask! Finally a massive thank you to Brian Smith who leant Phoebe his car when her's failed and boosted her with moral support throughout.
