In this video, I team up with fellow film photography enthusiasts and educators Dimitri and Daren to play "What The Film?" ; a guessing game in which photos are displayed, and we have to guess which filmstock was used to capture them! We were curious to know if black and white films actually differ from each other enough to be identified- and the results were.....varied! If you're interested to hear more about these differences from an educational perspective, pop over to Daren's channel for his video 'What The Film?'
/ @learnfilmphotography
If you want to put your own film-guessing skills to the test, pop over to Dimitri's blog 'Analog Cafe' to play the game yourself!

Huge shout out to Dimitri for coding this game, and to our subscribers / readers for submitting your photos!

I was excited to see your images come up! All the shots you submitted were GORGEOUS, I cut out a few minutes of us all oggling them as they came up. Beautiful work.

I paused and took the quiz myself. I didn't want my answers tainted. ha ha. A few were harder to tell, a couple I had first guesses I should have taken, but at least I got the 6th best score while on hard mode? 😅

WHAT!!! I bow to a film master far greater than myself. hahaha, I was shocked how poorly I did actually- I want to re-do it now with less pressure! Congratulations on the score!

Haha, thank you! I used to be like "other than grain, what looks different?" But I've definitely improved a little over the last few years ... finally. ha ha.

Great video! I could never do that. By the way, the audio track is kinda funky, almost if the left and right channels were flipped? It was quite confusing to watch with headphones on to be honest.

Oof yeah sorry about that! We had 3 different mics, and for reasons that were entirely my fault, the audio from each of them was unusable at certain points....I am not a gifted videographer that's for sure

The delta 3200 was shot at ISO 1600. I don't develop it myself, and when I went to the lab the guy taking it mixed delta 3200 and 1600 noting down "shot at 3600" 😢 so it's quite much overexposed
@YvonneHansonPhotography

Hahaha, what even is 3600 I'm curious to know how they wound up trying to develop that. The actual photo has some nice composition, and the over exposure did some justice to the shadows! Thank you for submitting by the way :D

This is not content. It's a sad game show. And it does not encourage anyone to shoot any of these stocks. Which they should.

I disagree. It actually helps telling the difference between different films to people who are first approaching film photography, or people who want to try new ones. What could be misleading is if shooters heavily post produced the scans

The idea is to show that buying a film stock doesn't necessarily mean you're stuck with a certain look. Film is an amazing medium that is capable of so much more variety than we give it credit for, and I personally find that beautiful.

@@LearnFilmPhotography Admit it, you just want taps. This is not how you get someone into film.

Why would someone want taps? That's what's played at military funerals. 🤔@@MakersTeleMark
