you’re not wrong but considering you can coil split a Humbucker or stacked p90 to accomplish that with much more versatility, I feel it’s only worth it if you are after the very specific twang and hum they give off.

Even though Peter Green played the riff with humbuckers, the P90's tone matches the original track better than the humbuckers here. Greeny is a truly cool guitar with a great tone

I've been playing PRS guitars with Humbuckers and Strats/Tele's for several years now. Don't care for Gibsons with their humbuckers (PRS does everything they do and MORE). But now I REALLY WANT a 50s Gold Top Les Paul with P90s. They sound so ballsy.

IMO as modeling software continues to get better and with thorough EQ+tone shaping, pickup type is further made irrelevant. With modern tools what you really want is low impedance and a full frequency response so that you have a "blank canvas" with which to shape your preferred tone from. Still a not-quite burgeoning market unfortunately, but there are some companies doing interesting things to create a pickup with a full frequency response.

1. P90 and SCs, 2. Humbuckers. Humbuckers darker tone tends to sound muddy, with ONE exception: that guitar which smell so good.... 😊

Single was Clean, Clear an bright.. like a 50s kinda sound.. but wasn't calling out to me.. P90 sounded slightly dirty but had a really good sound to me. Liked this one I think for my current type of play. The humbucker here to me sounded "muddy" and old school rockin.. an I don't think I could do this one the Justice of play it needs.

I like them all.. i just don't like the Strat design. But as long as it's functional.. it's good..
@73challenger503110 ай бұрын
It depends on the sound you're after as a guitarist and what kind of music your band at the time is playing. The Les Paul is a shorter scale which gives you a fatter sound to begin with and the bridge pick up is usually at 15K ohms or better. The Strat is a longer scale so the sound it produces is thinner than the shorter scale but, if you have a super Strat, it has a humbucker in the bridge and you can get a fatter sound with it. The Ibanez/Jackson super strats can have a humbucker at the neck as well. Most P90 guitars are short scale as well so, you get the best of both worlds because they are single coil pu's like the Strat but have more copper winding so higher ohm ratings. Also, Strats have a tremolo bar on most models so, if you want that, it's the way to go. There is, however, there are two Les Pauls that have a tremolo. Both are Alex Lifeson signature models. The Gibson was a limited edition and is no longer available, new but, ebay has some for about $6,000 and up. The Epiphone model sells for $1.300, new.

I'm curious what Humbucker that is and what signal chain and amp it's running through. I have an es335 and the bridge pickup is more articulate with a brighter top end than the one in his guitar. It could be coming down to the pickup, amp and pedal settings, or just that it's a Les Paul. I don't always find this the case, but HB's are notoriously associated with being "muddy" in the low end. Maybe that's what is going on? Personally, I love the 3 types of pickups you showed as they all play a different role and work well together for an expansive tonal pallet. Also a huge fan of goldfoils, Jazzmaster pickups, and tele pickups. The strat bridge position is not my favorite, but the strat as a whole is awesome.

Does the bridge pickup on your es335 have a pickup cover on it?
@christophernoia51979 ай бұрын
@@evil6564 it does not! I personally like the look of covered pickups more, but my 335 sounds so good that I have never wanted to mess with it.

@@christophernoia5197 Pickup covers do tend to take away brightness from humbuckers, so that could definitely explain what you're hearing. What year is your es335?
@christophernoia51979 ай бұрын
@@evil6564 it's from 1986. It belonged to my grandfather. Pretty sure it's equipped with tim shaw's recreation of the PAF as Gibson still had leftovers they used through the 80s after shutting down kalamazoo. It's either that, or they're an iteration of the Gibson dirty fingers humbuckers with only one coil of the pickup having the screw pole pieces, which is pretty rare because most of those have both sides with screw poles, but it is possible from my research. Most likely they are the shaw paf's. Either way, they sound wicked with the all original electronics. Edit: correction, it was purchased new in 86, it could have been made in 85. I still have the original receipt in the case so I'll cross check the purchase month and look up the serial number.
@evil65649 ай бұрын
@@christophernoia5197 335 and PAF is a great combination. What amp are you running it through? And what does it look like? My 335 is white and gold, I don't think I could bring myself to take the covers off. I think that's my only guitar with covers on though.
