NEWB HERE ….. When I began researching these trading strategies, the TRAILING METHOD stuck out to me. I think it’s worth it to see how long you can surf 🏄 🏄♂️ 🏄♀️ a trend , even if it hits and triggers your newly placed Stop Loss, you’re still in profit. But if you can hit one or two of those major swings per day, it’s like adding 20x each in those trades, rather than 2x here and there, dinking and dunking

The problem with "Stops" trailing or otherwise that no one discusses is WASH SALES. I learned the hard way if you sell a stock for a loss and buy it back or a similar stock within 31 days you are hit with a WASH SALE. Or, what's crazier if you bought a similar or the same stock 30 days before the loss sale, you are still hit with a WASH SALE. I sold 1,200 shares of a stock at a small loss, bought 100 shares back a few days later and found that my base price is actually three times what I paid for the 100 shares. What a lesson. Not sure if this applies to anything other than stocks and options.
@RileyColeman2 жыл бұрын
Dang that is a rough way to learn that. Generally that is more towards how taxes are figured out.
@stevecrim45572 жыл бұрын
@@RileyColeman WASH SALES have two sides - one is you don't get to take the loss as a tax deduction. The other is the loss amount is added to base price if you buy the stock back in less than 31 days. Appears there is two ways to avoid the penalty - don't buy the same or similar stock back for 31 days - or don't stop out at a loss. There is no way around a WASH SALE if you stop out and repurchase in the penalty window. I think the IRS rule only applies to stocks and options. I would never have noticed the one above except that the jump in base price is really high.

Trading without a solid strategy is like to driving a car without knowing where you're going. Without a strategy, even if you have the gas and the ability to drive, you won't get very far. Trading with strategies enables risk management by allowing traders to choose their entry and exit positions. A sound trading plan considers the current state of the market, your personal trading objectives, and the risk/reward ratio of probable deals. Additionally, it needs to be customized to your aims and trading style. In the end, having a strategy enables traders to take calculated risks and make informed judgments.

I've been scaling out 1/3rd of my position if a trendline breaks AFTER 1R, then waiting for the tail of that candle to close and using that as a full stop. If the trend reforms and continues, same story, scale out another 1/3rd at first sign of trend weakness where the TL begins to clearly break, then wait for that candle to close to move my trailing stop etc.

Good stuff Riley! Thanks. What do you think of Michael Chin's "runner" strategy? It looks like the main difference is you look to get as much profit from as many contracts as possible, whereas Michael looks for a much higher-chance small profit with some possible bonus points at the end.
@RileyColeman2 жыл бұрын
I think the runner strategy can work great but I don't think using it on every scalp is good. Because when you are scalping you are predicting quick reversals or movements in the market where the runner won't work well in unless you get lucky and a larger reversal happens. But for me I'm only looking for areas where a larger reversal will happen and setting up my strategy based on that.

Do you have any issues getting your orders to fill in Tradovate? As much as I like the platform, its getting really aggravating as it takes 2 sometimes 3 times for my orders to fill. It happens every day, it’s not just random (just 1 contract also)

@@RileyColeman I trade ES, real money, strange enough it still does it once or twice during heavy action… Another thing that started this week is my trading chart completely disappears with the numbers of contracts on the DOM for a few seconds until it all comes back to normal. If it was a problem with my laptop drivers, the screen would go completely blank but it is not the case…. It’s just my actual chart & amount of contracts that go away for a few seconds, the rest of the page/program still shows perfectly….making me wonder if they are spying, sounds far fetched but the way it his happening on my laptop is not normal.
