The wood technique (trick 1) was very helpful. I am struggling removing burrs from the tip of the apex. Due to this tutorial my sharpening skills have vastly improved. Thank you so much!

So glad it’s helping and you’re very welcome! I totally know the feeling. I felt like I was in the dark when I first started sharpening, and my hope with these videos is that I can help others to not only understand the process and concepts of sharpening, but to get good results quickly. Have a great day and stay sharp!

if my stropping compound is around 3k grit, and my finishing stone is 6k grit (i use a naniwa king 1000/6000) , is it worth it to strop the knife on a leather thingy, or should i just do it on my finishing stone?
@omarkul53207 ай бұрын
to me 6000 seems really fine allready

Whenever I remove the burr it's always one big line it's fun to watch haha. When I first started sharpening and that would happen I would always think my hair fell in.

You may want to try to stop before the burr becomes that large. Usually a small burr won't come off all in one piece. As off the stone pointed out, the burr is like bending a steel coat hanger back and forth until it breaks. What I'll add to that is this: after you break the hanger, the steel on each side is weakened and its integrity has been jeopardized. You don't want your apex to be comprised of this weakened steel, so it has to be removed. The smaller the burr, the less weakened steel there is at the apex. If your burr is large, after it breaks off, you have to hit the stone again if you want the healthiest, longest lasting edge possible. But if the burr is extremely small, there is very little to remove, and a strop can suffice. Burr minimization and proper removal are the most underrated steps in knife sharpening for performance.

If I just sharpen on a stone using forward strokes, ie, like cutting into the stone, surely I won't ever create a burr and avoid all this "scenario",, or am I missing something.. ??
@offthestone Жыл бұрын
@John.. If you don’t create a burr while sharpening, it won’t get as sharp as it can. When you create a burr, you are apexing the knife-or bringing both sides of the knife edge to an absolute point. I’ve sharpened many knives and not created a burr purposely to see how they would perform, and they always weren’t even close to as efficient or as sharp as when I created a burr. Hoping I understood your question correctly.

Thanks for the video! If I use my leather strop every 2 months do I need to wipe or wash off the old paste first? Or can I leave the old compound on the strap?
@Atreusz9 ай бұрын
No. Either the paste has dried out at some point or the color has changed significantly (metal abrasion) and the paste loses its strength
@kwinzman9 ай бұрын
@@Atreusz Hi! Just to clarify: no, you don't change the paste (unless it gets discorlored or dries out) Or no, you can't leave the old one on? (because it will have dried out after 2 months). I didn't fully understand your reply. Thanks in advance!
@Atreusz9 ай бұрын
@@kwinzman hi sorry. It takes a long time before you have to change a paste. If yours is already dry, take a drop of leather care or Ballistol and rub it onto the leather and then let it dry for 1 to 2 days. then the paste should be like new. For storage, buy a ziplock bag and put the leather in there.
