Time Marches on is indeed a great example of telling a lifetime in a song. Kids of the Baby Boom by the Bellamy Brothers is another: 100 years of American history told in 3 minutes. I'd say they are two of the best crafted pieces of writing ever, not just in songwriting, but any kind of writing.

Could you guys talk about money? How writers get paid, how is money handled when there’s multiple writers, what’s a smart way to go about the process regarding compensation, how to ensure payment is fair, etc.?

If you're telling a story in a song, like sitting around the campfire, your story might involve multiple characters represented by multiple pronouns - she, they, it, you and as well as I as narrator. One trick is to just leave the pronoun out where it seems too confusing and make it implicit.

So to simplify one of your tips: basically the listener needs some foreplay and NOT rush into the big idea!!!

Yes, they need contest and setting. Then introduce the big idea. Foreshadow the big idea but don't give it away. ~CM
