The Ableton 12 gave me the push to start using Bitwig 5. Ableton 12 has just been updated with a bunch of useless stuff. It's as if Ableton is playing a game of catch up. And Ive been using Ableton since 2006! I know it well. Hell, I should be doing tutorials. But this new Ableton has a whole new learning curve. So I just decided to use my time learning Bitwig. Because this Bitwig DAW.....Is just plain incredible, experimental and creatively more intuitive. I love it!

I have used Bitwig for about 18 months, and I know Ableton, but I don't use it. Initially, the huge price put me off for full access. The upgrade plans from lite to anything was crazy. It just seemed like I got more for less cost and a year of upgrades, which took me from v4 to all of v5 of bwig Ableton users complain about a lack of upgrades, and from what I can tell, they are now trying to catch up with the competition. The Wigs modulation always seemed great to me; I could just open bitwig to find an instrument, and if I like the sound, start making some different music around the concept, throw in some random or instrument that is just a preset. Its brighter interface and ability to put things on full screen at full size, like spectrum analyser, etc., are cool. The grid and making your own instruments are cool, too, without having to pay more for less with Albeton. Ableton, for me, only wins in mouse-to-arranger accuracy and the fact it gives a fuck about scales. So you know what your key your in etc, I don't want to just ignore classical music study. I think the basic understand helps. Really my only grip with bitwig, and perhaps getting to size right at times. I would just like to know if I am playing E, that it's in key, not filter the keys.. anyway what do i know:)

So true. I used to use Live many years ago but use Studio One now. I recently tried a new version of Live and was excited to see how much it had progressed but I was shocked to see it had hardly progressed in any meaningful way at all! Whereas I've seen Studio One progress nicely in that same time. I really like Bitwig but still looks incomplete to me but I feel it will progress in time

Bitwig and Reaper are on the forefront of innovation right now. Bitwig is probably the most elegantly designed DAW I've ever used. Everything is consistent and follows a discernible and cohesive logic, something I haven't experienced with Live or FL Studio (quite the contrary).

I really like Bitwig, too. You can also take any "knob" from a third-party virtual synthesizer and place it straight down. You need to open a small window and click on the cross, then on the WiFi icon, and then on the control knob you want on the third-party synthesizer. And then take the module you need from Bitwig and put it into your virtual synthesizer and link the control knob you added before. But most importantly, it's really all in front of you. Working with MIDI or audio files is very easy to do, you can see everything in the left inspector. Have a nice day.

I looked at Bitwig being a Cubase user and I eventually decided to stick with Cubase. Bitwig has a lot of cool features like the built in modular instruments and modulation capabilities, but I know how to use Cubase like the back of my hand. The other thing is that Cubase is much more mature and Bitwig is still adding features that Cubase has had for a long time...

@@Rad_onewell the nice thing about Bitwig and Studio One (Professional though) is the DAWproject compatibility. You could theoretically start a project on Studio One Pro…seamlessly open it in Bitwig to do some fancy modulation work, bounce the MIDI to audio….then reopen it in Studio One Pro to finish it up.

There’s also elements Bitwig have that Cubase could never have - such as the modulation system and internal modular synthesis stuff. I used to be on Cubase, as well as Studio One. Both great daws (in their similar-but-different ways). However Bitwig, for me, is in a league of its own - particularly for creative production. Honesty haven’t looked back since making the switch.

As a noob electronic musician, Roger Linn recommended Bitwig when I bought a Linnstrument. I made a lot of music with Bitwig the first year I used it but I went hunting for a new DAW when the trial period ran out and ended up purchasing Ableton. It took me three years to get to where I was producing at the same level I was with Bitwig. (Somebody explain sunk cost fallacy to me.) That's mostly a testament of how difficult Ableton is to learn how to do well, although it's also a reflection of the amount of time I had to study each. I do miss the look and feel of Bitwig.

After installing Bitvig and studying it thoroughly. I have given up on most external VSTs. And now I install only what complements Bitwig. Similar to the Ozone equalizer, which has a linear mode. Or a linear crossover from NIH plugs to do multiband processing of your master bus. Moreover, these are also free plugins. Most of the sounds I make inside the Grid, some I make in the Vital. You just need to set up your Serum and Massive tables. Which are in the public domain. As well as free tables from ESW. In general, Bitwig provides me with everything I need for serious production. For $15 a month. Since they still have rent-to-own. The ultimate solution!

@jshstuff

he’s talking about a linear phase crossover to avoid phase shift when doing multiband on the master and screwing stuff up. I also second the original comment. I basically don’t use 3rd party plugins anymore. unless it’s something like a piano VST I really like, or anything else that can’t easily be done in bitwig… which is uncommon. like, I’ve even ditched Serum which is my main synth, because bitwig’s Polymer synth with a wavetable oscillator loaded up is basically identical to Serum. I’ve built dozens of Grid presets that recreate common, paid plugins. bitwig is actually a dream come true for me.

@jonaudio yea, I completely agree. Two very different work flows. I am yet to make anything good in bitwig lol but I just started with it. There is just SO MUCH i can do. The grid is a really really cool environment to experiment with Fx or instruments. I've found making drums in the grid comes out really nice. I also made a nice chorus as well. can ableton do this on a project ... no (John did not even touch this part of the modulation ... ) , or even create your own devices in the grid...no ? not saying ableton is bad but it is missing some opportunities that make it become oldscool versus the new kid on the block

I'm still too comfortable with Reason and some of its awesome propriety instruments to make a switch, but Bitwig seems to have a lot more going for it in terms of modulation and presentation. Also Reason can be finicky to work with some midi generation VST's, making it a bit of a pain to use at all (defeating the point of the plugin lol) and it would also be nice to have a main DAW that's not subscription based I guess.

I have both FL Studio and Bitwig and my only real gripe with Bitwig is it lacks the perpetual licence you get with FL. If it had that then it would be beyond awesome. Bitwig need to lower the price of the upgrades. I also own Cubase Elements and the upgrade price for that is a mere £25. Maybe Bitwig should focus on lowering the upgrade licence price and making their money with the add-on packs. We hobbyist musicians do not have the financial resources that pro studios have. Yes I know I can still use an old version.

Strongly disagree and so does the majority of the user base. They already tried paid add ons and it was an absolute disaster. You can buy an upgrade plan on sale multiple times throughout the year and even if you upgrade every year on the dot it’s only £9/month, which barely buys you a single measure gin and tonic in a London bar.

The only thing I hate about Bitwig is the browser 🙄 even Ableton is more organized and straight to the point on that. Just give me a window for plugins and a window for my sound libraries. Having all those options there and different windows makes it a hot mess. I don't like it.

@@jonaudio On this video. I mentioned how to do a youtube search using "Bitwig " as a prefix then followed by some names. I will repeat here, it might pass. The censorship is not a fixed thing. If it was it could be demonstrated and brought to justice somehow. Here goes. "Bitwig " followed by "Polarity", "Taches", "Axel Reid", "Rumble channel". Polarity by himself has 246 Bitwig tutorial videos. Then there are also the ones provided by Bitwig themselves, at least a hundred videos. And also, other youtube audio content creators that put out from time to time Bitwig tutorials. So there's a lot. I wanted to chime in to bring this fact. Bitwig tutorials are not scarce by any means. And then there's the user guide which is quite complete.
