Then it was Cristiano winning the Eurocup (although not playing the final match) and Messi not having a trophy with Argentina. This is the exact same analysis I had when comparing the all time greats...all of them missing important aspects of their careers which would immortalise them, pele being an exception because of his 3 world Cups, but he never played in europe....as for the rest, so much seperates them from Messi...from everything, goals, assists, MoM awards, Ballon d'Or's, he's shown greatness everywhere, Champions league, domestic, international...he's honestly the best of all time and I can't put my finger as to why there are still debates on this. I feel like most people hold Sentimental value on particular players because of where they are from or whether it was the player they grew up watching.

The reason that it can be argued whether Messi is the GOAT or not is because there are too many variables that do not allow for a consistent metric when comparing Messi to Maradona and Pele: 1. The existence of red/yellow cards. 2. Changes in rules of the game 3. The evolution and quality of the pitches 4. The existence/creation of trophies and who were eligible to win them. The only illogical reason to argue against Messi is, of course, nostalgia. I'm with you. I believe he is the GOAT. Or at the very least deserving to sit among Pele and Maradona in the pantheon. But for the reasons mentioned, I understand why some think it can never truly be decided.

Yup, I'd add Di Stéfano and Cruyff on a different dimension in the game. Also, there is the evolution is sports medicine, and also nutrition. That also helps career longevity, and we shall see more examples of this. You also need a prime work ethic (something that Cristiano has) and luck (no (big?) injuries). Cristiano fails short on playing ability for GOAT IMO. He did have a very impressive career, somewhat weakened by some shenanigans in 2022.

Opposition research has always existed, but the ability to implement it on a wide and consistent scale was hampered due to technological limitations: the absence of there being any in Pele's time and cumbersome video tech of Maradona's time. Basically I'm talking about the ability to record digital footage so that the opposing camp (coach, assistant coach, players) can study a player like Messi. It can be dissected and analyzed, run through computer algorithms, and carried around with you at all times and shared in an instant. The fact that this is done to Messi and he STILL manages to be an attacking/assisting threat is ridiculous!!!!! Maradona and Pele never had to contend with this! Yes there was later footage of Pele and footage of Maradona but you're watching it on a big ass tv with a vcr without any digital enhancements. This is a far cry from a coach being on a plane with their whole squad on their way to their match with argentina and reviewing Messi's most recent game. This studying the opponent also leads to my next point: the cross-pollination and integration of playing styles across borders and continents. There used to be different styles associated and championed by different regions/continents. While vestiges of this still exist, the game is much more an amalgam of what works. Argentina and Brazil's style of play is no longer some regional, closely guarded secret. International players and coaches abound sharing their techniques. This wasn't the case in Pele and Maradona's time. For these two points, I do absolutely think Messi is the GOAT.

Bringing in stats is too complicated because you have to include everyone, teammates and opposition stats and it turns into a giant mess, you literally have to take into account of every other player contributions that effect the stats of Messi, cr7 and how that data effects them in game. It is simply better to say that Messi slightly has a higher goal scoring ratio, just slightly but assists Messi dominates. Messi contributes more to his team and helps more to achieve goal scoring opportunities, hence why he has a slightly higher goal ratio. Ronaldo in the other hand is a striker who searches opportunity to score whether it is a volley, header, or tap in. Hence why he has a lot of goals, Ronaldo will score if he receives the ball. As opposed to Messi who creates tons of goal scoring opportunities. Basically putting Ronaldo and Messi on the same team would give messi 10,000 assists, 7,000 goals and cr7 9,000 goals but 3,000 assists. Ronaldo scores more goals but Messi is the reason he has a higher goal count. Taking Ronaldo out of the team would drastically lower Ronaldo goal count. Messi contributes alot more to cr7. So, yeah Messi is better by that fact.
