turntechGodhead . . Well that’s more like a personal growth thing, I didn’t sell much last year when I did commissions, because I was not good and was too overconfident, in the end I was just setting myself up for disappointment, but that made me grow and actually look up at other professional artists, study from them, read more books about art, practice from what I’ve learnt and did that for several months, promoting my art whenever I could, and slowly I started getting noticed by people, and when I saw that there was enough interest i took my time to set up my art shop, and I’ve been working non stop since then with fair prices. My old self wasn’t prepared at all to take on commissions, studying (+practicing) and this growing more as a person plays a very important part in it. You may not see it now, but i hope you find something that works for you in the future.

It doesn’t really matter how good or bad you think your art is, if your art has a meaning or message people will buy it regardless of how technically accurate it is. I feel like any aspiring artist out there should create art that makes them happy and has a purpose or a cause something that reflects their ideas, views, and emotions. If you make art for the purpose of selling it you might not sell anything. There’s going to be a lot more starving artists out there if anyone out there thinks that an art career is a profitable one. Of course a career in art can make you a lot of money but the monetary gain shouldn’t be the reason you want to become an artist nor if you think it will be easy. The best advice I can give is to just create and have fun doing it. Get involved in your communities meet other artists face to face and just enjoy the experience. I’m not telling you to forget about making money, I’m just saying not to stress about it work hard to be a better artist and person for yourself not money. If you stick to that the profits will start flowing guaranteed.

People get way to hung up on style. Draw what you enjoy drawing. I first started drawing fat nudes 🤷♀️ my art teacher made fun of me (not in a mean way just that it was funny a shy girl was okay with that and everyone else shred away). Now I write and draw comics, I also paint in watercolour, acrylics and oils. There’s always someone who will like what you do. There is a genre for raptors, there is also one for maids who turn into dragons, your taste really are not that rare is my point.

I do find myself In the same situation, for me, thinking that even though you see the mistakes in your own art, other people don’t see it the same way you do, think about what you like about other artists art and think of what they think of their own art, do you think they are happy? I don’t think so because part of learning and bettering yourself is the desire to be better. Without the desire you won’t be better. Draw, finish a piece and then let it go, that piece is done, make another one, a different one and repeat the process, learn to love the mistakes in your art, sometimes those quirky mistakes (the shade, the shape, whatever it is you don’t like) make a piece very special and unique, continue to draw forever 💖

Your effort to "try to improve" is what will separate you from so many other painters. It is strange that so many people who paint reach a point, and then stay there, where they don't make a deliberate effort to "try to improve". There is a painter, John Horejs, who didn't have his first set of oils until he was twenty-four - by thirty-seven he was making a good living as a painter. Why? Because he worked at his craft conscientiously, and made a deliberate effort to constantly improve - two things that all of us can do to make our works better.

My roommates and their family suggested I take my finished paintings to a craft fair and sell them (especially since I end up throwing away my finished paintings). It's nice knowing they think my art is ready to be sold but I don't think I could personally do that. Physically seeing people look and walk by would probably stress me out.

Listen this is what you do. Get a DBA and post your paintings for sale online. Time yourself on each painting, add in the cost of materials + no less than minimum wage + shipping & posting fee's. Just post and wait, the right buyer will come along. You wont have to watch people walk by and see their reactions or be disheartened when you don't sell it that day. You don't need to undercut the cost in order to sell it. It doesn't even need to be a masterpiece. Just create a little online store & advertise it however you can. You can even include a time limit and remove paintings from the list after time ran out. This creates a sense of scarcity & increases the value of your art. You can then either trash it or hold onto it for a time before reposting. I know that traditional art costs a lot more to make and comes with more cleanup and delivery fee's. Your logic goes out the window when you consider abstract paintings and the insane prices people will spend on them. Trust me with the social media technology today there is someone out there who will pay top dollar for your work. I'm currently in the process of establishing my own art business, currently centered around Stylized portraits & character design. I've spent the last 2 years laying down the ground work, improving my skills & building up my portfolio & social networks, learning about the legal & business aspects of running my own company. I have been periodically been getting more requests & commissions letting me know that my art skills are desired & marketable. I plan to officially launch open commissions in January 2021, a little over a month from now. Anyone interested in checking out my art can find me @ instagram.com/savagefoxcoe/ www.deviantart.com/savagefoxdesigns Professional website coming next year. Will follow for follow if your an artist. I thought I'd find myself on this list, but I was pleasantly surprised. The only reason I could fall in the category of "should not sell art" is because of my disability. I have days where I'm stuck in bed and I can't do anything. But I know you know how that feels. For me, I just tell people ahead of time that I take a while longer to make commishs, and if there's something I've done and someone were to approach me over it, I'll still find a way to get it to them. I always worry that my art will end up being like my past few career paths, that I've had to quit because of my arthritis pain. But the good thing with art, I've found, is as long as you're reasonable, if someone really wants something done by you, they'll wait. It's a new feeling for me.

Let me give 2 tips: 1. You know some artists who try to sell their art through selling apps, or buying and selling groups, do not do that. The reason is because 99% of these apps and groups are sellers, and so your art might never be sold. 2. Be mentally ready. Your art can be rejected. Because art is a luxury item, and so those who are buying art can either be those looking for paintings to hang their homes or those who are interested in art, so those people are very selective.

Just keep posting your art and once people start asking you if you do commissions & you notice more people asking for your work you'll know your good enough but not necessarily ready to sell just yet. Trust me when I say most artists struggle with depression and low self-esteem. Its one of the things that drives us towards art as a form of self expression. This is also another reason why not all artists are cut out to be professionals. Low self-esteem artists tend to undersell their art making less than sweat shop slaves begging scammers to take advantage of them. I wouldn't sell your art until you have a realistic image of what its actually worth as well as understanding the legal and business side of running your own business. This was and is a big hurdle for me but I'm jumping through those hoops & learning. I'm currently in the process of establishing my own art business, currently centered around Stylized portraits & character design. So I’m only 14 and personally when I look at my art, I really really like it! People also are ALWAYS complimenting it, and a few people told me that they would give me money in exchange of a drawing (people don’t know what commissions are lol) but my problem is I have no platform. I’m gonna make an art instagram I’m sure, but where will I get my first wave of followers? I guess I could lead some people that I already know and use hashtags and stuff, but what do you think about it? Another way I see it is that maybe the universe is just doing this to give me some time to improve before I do anything stupid lol But another problem I have is I have no drawing tablet, and that’s honestly kind of the reason I wanna open commissions, I wanna have enough money for my first tablet. But until then, how will I sell traditional art pieces? I live somewhere where I can’t really/don’t know how to/would be a pain in the butt to try to ship ANYTHING out of here since I’m really young and all but, do you think it would be ok to sell just a picture of the piece? Like a really nice picture with good lighting and a camera? Idk what to do anymore really need advice here.

First of all, it made me smile so much that you love your art. I always see people. (cough, me) that don't like their art that much. I'm no professional obviously, never done a commision in my life, but if your commisioner is okay with a picture, then go for it! Maybe you could ask your friends and family to put birthday/Christmas money towards a drawing tablet?? idk, just trying to help! Do whatever you are comfortable with, okay?

Well, I don’t know what your art looks like and what medium you use. I think if you have a basic grasp on perspective, anatomy, proportions, and simple elements like those as well as the things mentioned in the video you’ll be fine to start commissions. When pricing your art, take the hours you worked on the piece, the money you put into materials, and your skill level into consideration. You should also put some guidelines and restrictions about what you can be commissioned to avoid any problems with future customers.

For so many years people gave the great value to the dead artists, but wait a minute, living artists need to eat, dress, move, etc, give yourself a chance. Cause even when you dont attend an art school, we are the kind of being that were born creative. Good luck yall.

How has that worked out for you by now? A way to start is by having a few pieces of art you’re personally proud of. Research local art marketing places and submit your work! Learn about being an entrepreneur and use social media if you want. Stay updated with trends and be creative and have your own twist to your art. You can even make your own website and speak to your art teacher at school and ask her for guidance. Good luck!

I'm 17 and gotta sell my art because of my school program called the Project of Entrepreneur, and I feel like I gotta try so hard for people to appreciate my art... while I also feel like I want to be free with my arts, so I just waste a lot of money for the project while none wants to buy it while they said "your art is too good to be that cheap" (yet none buys it!) Makes me feel so confused and have self-esteem at the same time. Thank you very much for this video, it brings me a spark of confidence^^

I have a plan to start selling my art And I might be too young. I'm going to get 150 followers on instagram (some reason, a lot of my followers are professionals) and tell them I am going to start selling art. I'm gonna sell on redbubble (or some other website) after researching THE HECK outta of it. I'll sketch in my book and color and outline digitally. But... did you ask? Nah.

For my first commission I was 13. (Jk im still 13) it was in April 2019. This lady is my dad's office mate and she messaged *my dad* that she wanted me to draw her son. My dad told her to message *me* about it because he doesn't know my prices and alot of details. So a few days? Go by and she still hasn't messaged me about the commission so my dad told Me to message Her instead. "Okay sure" i thought in my head I needed the money anyway. I tell her the price (which was way too cheap now that I reflect on it) and ask her to give me a reference photo. Through out the drawing process I kept messaging her about the size etc. and it went well it took me about 5 days to finish the drawing and putting it on a board for framing. Idk how long commissions for pencil portraits are supposed to take but I did it in less than a week. My dad told me that his office mate asked him "Hey is your daughter working on the drawing?" Because maybe the progress seemed too slow. (Please reply to me how fast portraits would normally take) Keep in mind the portrait was only abt A5 size but her son was pretty hard to draw not gonna lie. xD So yea idk why but I had to comment that

So once it was done my dad brought it to his workplace to pass it to her. She wasn't there because her son was sick and she had to stay home. And that was friday so i has to wait 3 days for my money which limda stressed me bcs the portrait was left on her desk and it wasn't paid for yet. Oh and it costed RM53 which if you convert to USD was only about 13-14 dollars. Oh well. (I spent 9+ hours on that portrait) If you wanna see it go to my instagram @Julspolychromos_art 🙋🏻💛

Thank you so much for creating this video..I’ve been telling myself that selling my art should be my LEAST priority, given that I have school, and tests, and tons of stuff to be worrying about, but my brain just keeps thinking that this is important. When I’m sitting there zoning out, I’m thinking about my art. When I can’t sleep at night it’s because I’m thinking about business. I guess what I’ve been telling myself all along just never really sank in until I heard you tell me. I guess I need to take a moment and think about what’s really important, and be patient. Again, thank you for this :)

Great advice!! Creating art is a journey and everyone’s journey is different. If your art isn’t selling that doesn’t mean stop making art or convince yourself that you aren’t good enough. Everyone’s timing is different and patience and practice are the two things that will get you where you want. Thank you for sharing 😃

Hello, I just started using IG last April and im using it for posting my artworks. After 4 months of posting artworks, my account is booming, as well as requests for Prints. Everytime when someone asking me about commissions i always got scared a little bit. Because i usually just gift or store my artworks. Most people requesting for a Prints are from the west, i live in SEA. Its my 1st time to sell an artworks and i don't know what to do. Is Deviantart okay for selling arts prints? I'm confused because here in our country, selling arts isnt enough for a living because they want it really2x cheap like $5. I don't want to sell my artworks in that price because art materials isn't that cheap and it take me 2 days to finished one artwork.

I'd like to recommend people to often look at trending pictures that have been posted recently. Study them, see what they have in common and try to put some of whatever you've observed into your own art to get noticed more. Or look at trending tags and make a picture that you could put those tags on and go through your already existing pictures and put those tags on those.
