In this class, "How We Got the Bible," we're continuing on in our quest to understand the sources for the Hebrew Bible. We've already covered the Masoretic Text and the Dead Sea Scrolls, but we have one last important Hebrew source to look at before surveying several significant ancient translations. As it turns out the Samaritans have their own Hebrew version of the Torah, commonly called the Samaritan Pentateuch. In this episode you'll learn about the Samaritan Pentateuch and why scholars take it more seriously today than they did in previous centuries. We'll also consider very important ancient translations of the Tanakh, in Greek, Aramaic, Syriac, and Latin.

Jesus tells us the samaritans don't know what they worship-->John 4:22 KJV - Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews.

How about doing a video on the Redaction of Hebrew scripture by King Josiah while sharing how the writings prior to the redaction told a completely different story which in a lot of ways aligned with the Cuneiform writings of the Sumerians and Babylonians.

One archeological and historical fact is that the alphabet that the Samaritans use is the original Hebrew writing of all Hebrews(Northern Israelites-known as Samaritans today and Jews) from before the Babylonians took the Jews captive to Babylon(modern day Iraq). This is why in Hebrew we call the current Hebrew alphabet that Jews use 'katsav ashur'(Assyrian writing/alphabet) and the paleo Hebrew alphabet that Samaritans use is called 'katsav Ivrit'(Hebrew writing/alphabet). This is the way they are called in Hebrew by Jews as well. This is also supported by archeology as all Hebrew inscriptions written in Northern Israel(ancient Samaria)and Judah from before the Babylonian captivity and all coins from Jerusalem and the inscriptions found in Hezekiah's tunnel all used the same alphabet that Samaritans use today.

Is there an English Bible that takes into account SP, MT, LXX, and Syriac Targums, and harmonize them?

As we have the New Testament, the Jews have the Talmud. Just an aside. Excellent presentation!

Genesis 2:2 of the Samaritan Pentateuch also confirms the Septuagint reading over the MT

It's not respectful to Scripture to reject Christ

Sorry but those are not the same people from Biblical times, they aren't part of ancient Israel, they don't keep the same religion, nor can they, as they practice something called Rabbinical Judaism.

-Dead Sea scrolls validate LXX as legitimate -Vast majority of NT quotes of OT are from the LXX and LXX reading is the reading chosen in key instances such as Isaiah 7. -All the church fathers used the LXX -The translation allows you to see how some Jews interpreted the texts before Christ (ex Angel of Great Counsel) -Paul in Galatians 3:16 agrees with the Septuagint reading of several passages of genesis. Use of the Hebrew text would undercut his point. He makes sure to point out seed is singular in the LXX. This is not the case in the MT. How can any Christians object to object to this? I have no problems with the MT, and I’m certainly not an LXX onlyist, but the Septuagint must be held in very very high regard by Christians. This is the Bible of the apostolic church, and you must understand the LXX to understand Paul.

Not only this, but manuscripts of the LXX have been found among the DSS. This shows it was a total lie to say Jews never used the LXX. The reason they stopped using it is because it has tons and tons of readings that are favorable to the Christian interpretation.

Interesting that the ancient Israelite sacrificial alter(s) were found at Mt Ebal... not Gerazim. Roman alters found on Mt. Gerazim.

I am thoroughly enjoying your presentation brother. However i do need to point out an error you said about the LXX. That "story" is more than just a make believe idea. If you consider what the 1st century hebrew scholar and historian Josephus says is true. Antiquities 12.2.13: When he had brought them thither, he entreated them (now they had all things about them which they wanted for the interpretation of their law) that they would suffer nothing to interrupt them in their work. Accordingly, they made an accurate interpretation, with great zeal and great pains, and this they continued to do till the ninth hour of the day; after which time they relaxed, and took care of their body, while their food was provided for them in great plenty... Now when the law was transcribed, and the labor of interpretation was over, which came to its conclusion in seventy-two days, Demetrius gathered all the Jews together to the place where the laws were translated, and where the interpreters were, and read them over. The multitude did also approve of those elders that were the interpreters of the law. Also Philo of Alexandria agrees with Josephus. Peace and blessings.

@4:49, 😳🤯 This type of lead-and response singing was done in traditional Black (Baptist) churches! I remember it quite well ; and loved it!!! My favorite is, “I called the Lord (and) He heard my cry! (The congregation would repeat the lead…. And so forth ❤️

Actually the way they tread that roll of paper appears a lot like Idol worship. Too bad they didn't love their Messiah as much as they see to love that book.

At 3:58...that was the most beautiful Shema I have heard in a long time. I have tears in my eyes. You are right about having more respect for the Bible. When I grew up, we revered our Bible by never writing in it. We never placed other books near, or on top of it. My Grandmother had a special place for her hundred or so year old Bible. It had a hand carved ornate stand where it stood. It was for home reading only. It never left its place as long as I remember. A cloth covered it. What is wrong with Christians today? It is blasphemous to think just because you are a Christian, or you are saved, that you have the right to blaspheme His Holy Word. Bible neglect should be prevented and stressed by ALL clergymen! The Torah was dictated by Hashem Himself to Moshe. How dare we neglect the words of our only G-d! I love your work. My grandmother was a Christian born in 1911 and my Grandfather was born in 1899. They feared G-d by keeping the Bible Holy. What is wrong with us? Much much LOVE TO YOU!
