I learned to play the barre F in the summer holidays 1965. It was slow, painful and the best move I EVER made. Anyone struggling, really try to stick with it. It really IS worth the effort. Bear in mind too, your guitar's action needs to be reasonable, if it's too high the pain and difficulty are magnified. Last hint. To learn to place your fingers correctly takes oodles of practice so consider down-tuning the strings a couple of semitones so the E becomes a D and so on. This reduces the tension and makes the fretting easier, also it improves confidence, the more confident you become, the better the result. One last comment, there's a KZbin of Eric Clapton playing and discussing his 000-28EC and he makes a truism - the better quality the instrument, the easier it is to play. Took me 40 years to buy the best instrument I could reasonably afford and my playing has improved immeasurably. Good luck . . . thank you Tony.

I love your tip about playing partial barre chords because it encourages players to keep going and practicing even if it's not perfect. It shows even as a beginner you can modify so the chords still sound nice and that's the kind of thing that keeps new players playing consistently. That in between when things just sound bad is hard, and I think that's when a lot of people give up.

Tip: An F position on the 1st fret (where the F chord actually is) also has wider frets and a stronger resistance from the strings (Ever tried to do a bend on a 1st or 2nd fret?).One could try the same F position on higher frets which are narrower and where the strings feel a bit 'looser'. That way your fingers start building the strength necessary for all the other positions, including The F chord. There's no way around barre chords. Repetition is key. Thanks for the video Tony

I have the shape for major and minor barre chords memorized, with 6 string and 4 string variations. I can platy them and sound out all strings, but I struggle with prolonged playing (espcially with making demos more recently). One of the best tips I heard that helped me get comfortable with getting comfortable and having the strength for all strings is getting into position, strumming a few times to ensure good sound, then taking your hand completely off the fret board and relaxing, even shaking your hand out. Make no mistake, you'll need to practice with some regularity and over a few different sessions to really get comfortable. When your hand gets a little tired, take a break and try to find another chord in that shape or a minor variation (this helps learn the fretboard too). Find the next chord, rinse and repeat. I'm still building up hand strength myself, but I learned my bar chords in about 2 weeks of focused practice! Keep up the good work and you'll be ready to play any song in no time, and unlock a lot more options for strumming and muting string with all your fingers!

This was great, been searching for "natural major scale guitar" for a while now, and I think this has helped. Ever heard of - Vonizabeth Strumming Magnitude - (just google it ) ? Ive heard some decent things about it and my friend got cool success with it.

Beginner guitarist here and that piece about applying your picking forearm to the body to apply pressure to help your index finger is pure gold! I've been watching videos for while and no one has mentioned that part. Thanks!

Just don't do it too much, you'll bent the neck back and that raises the pitch just a bit.

These tips work well for strumming but it still sounds muted when I try to finger pick the B & high E string :(
@tymartin22934 жыл бұрын
Hey, dumb question. When you barre, the finger should press on all the strings or just 1? For example, the f. Is barring the low E with his fingertip or is his finger pressing all 6 strings? I'm a few months in...
@natureinthecitymusic4 жыл бұрын
Hey, have you tried to ONLY fret the low E, H and high E string with the barring finger? Since the other three strings are already being fretted with the other fingers, it helps to focus the strength on the strings that need fretting with the pointer finger

Yeah, the finger roll is priceless and new to me (after 45 years of guitar playing.) Down the road any tips on anxiety reduction with regard to bar chords might be nice - I find that while daydreaming on the couch I form them in a timely, almost effortless manner - but when I think about them (e.g., anticipate a transition while recording or performing) too much, they start sounding raunchy. Thanks again!

I’m relativity new to guitar but could relate to your over thinking some chord or thing your trying to do it and then Stress to me is the ultimate killer of guitar playing!,! ,When I try really hard and get stressed/ mad I absolutely cannot play whatever I’m working on So what I actually realized is if you are getting frustrated and stressed and over thinking it just let it go and come back to it ... another little tip is Wine will help way more than a Redbull Guitar is not something you can Power through , you must Relax and enjoy it Even if you have to practice over and over try ending on a positive note never in frustration and if your frustrated with what your working on stop and learn a new Riff or piece of a song that inspires you and makes you feel good and Happy then end on that cause you will want to pick it up again 👍🎸🤔😍🎸🎤

Try thumb bar chords it's a lot easier for some people
@DesertRat3322 жыл бұрын
What helped me the most was thumb placement. A fellow guitarist saw I had the meat of my thumb way up high on the neck. He instructed me to move my thumb down to the middle of the neck. That tip helped me to squeeze the neck properly and get clear sounding barre and "grand barre" chords. The "grand barre" is what I call using just the ring finger to bar the D, G and B strings. It gives you even more chords to bar up and down the neck.
