Straightforward recommendations👍🏽 I admit it took me a while to realize and apply your advice. Now, based on past experience with certain dealers, they automatically know I’m serious and are willing to negotiate further.

Great advice as always. Love your honesty and transparency. I really don’t know who can be offended by the truth. Especially when as a dealer you’re constantly helping us (consumers / watch enthusiasts) out.

Fed makes very valid points. Especially if you are purchasing a watch that is in high demand. I would add that the watch market has many dealers and not all dealers sell at the same price. There is the asking price and what you can negotiate! It pays to shop and KNOW what is a fair price.

"I'll be ready to buy next week". "Great! Call me next week then". Spot on. Do your research this week, then call the seller with a fixed offer when you're ready. "I'll buy it now, for X. If you're happy with that I'll transfer the money in the next half an hour. " Deal done.

I do my research before I go into the watch AD. I know the price neighborhood I want to be in, and don’t have problems getting there. The two ADs I use for different brands know me and know I’m not a tire kicker. And you are right-I don’t negotiate unless I’m ready to buy if the price is fair. Also understand that some brands or models don’t offer discounts.

Walk in wear something special. One of my favorites is a early 50s thin omega manual wind. And a tshirt. Look around and listen to the salesperson. Let them offer.end of month is an old tactic. But shop mid month. You got the info on inventories and availability. Once the deal is done agree on the payment. Wire transfer.

I was looking for a Nomos which I like. I went to the AD who sells them here in Thailand and told the sales person up front I wasn't in the market at that time to buy but wanted to see what the watches looked like in real life. The assistant was very helpful and they will get the sale when I am ready to buy. It is wrong to lead someone on with the believe you are buying when you are not going to at least not at that time.

I'll relate my experience. I visited a shop in a high end hotel in LV, just looking, and saw a watch that I really liked. But it had a strap and I wanted one with a bracelet. Store found one in NYC and had it shipped overnight. At that point I hadn't made any offers on price. In the interim I saw the same watch on Chrono24 from a dealer for much less (25K vs. 35K). In the end, the matched the price, let me pay with 2 different credit cards, and shipped it to my home city to avoid sales tax. Says something about the list price markup. Not sure if it was end of month or not.

True story, lawyer calls client day before the closing on the sale of a 400k house (this is many years ago) to make sure everything is square. Client says something like "yep, I have my checkbook ready." Lawyer says...wait...what...no they won't take your personal check, you need certified funds. Client gets super offended. The next day he shows up, with 400k in cash, and says if they don't want my check how about this. Dude took it as personal offense that his name wasn't good enough to accept a personal check on the sale of a house.

Fed gave a good tip some time ago; ask, “Are there any price considerations if I purchase today.” I was able to get a “first-time customer” discount of 10% with an out-of-state AD and was pleased. I don’t seek to negotiate with my local AD. I played the game of multiple purchases to eventually secure a nice brand but they’ve really done little for me given my purchases. Now I’ll go where the brand, price and purchase experience meets my expectations.
@ColinRobinson92 Жыл бұрын
Sometimes though, the negotiating is one sided. I remember walking into an AD once and after browsing for a couple of minutes, the sales rep asked me "So what kind of watches do you go for?" And so I start talking about a beautiful gray dial Navitimer I saw recently and he said "Oh I know the one you mean, I'll be right back" He literally ran out of the store and down the street to a higher end place and came back with a Navitimer, but not the one I was talking about, and the next think I know, he's offering to knock about $600 off of it or something. Well, at this point I'm not negotiating, he is. So I beat a quick retreat and never returned. I don't feel like I breached any kind of etiquette there. He was trying to run a full court press while I was warming up in the batters box.

People aren’t buying a $10 Casio from these dealers. They are buying relatively expensive pieces of jewelry that often don’t fall into the “logical buy category”. Decision to buy a watch like this is driven by pure emotion for most people. So, is it wrong for people to chat up a dealer, discuss prices, consider prices and offers from competitors and maybe even step back and take some extra time to think about their purchase before they swipe their card? Absolutely not! It’s what everyone should be doing to avoid impulse purchasing. If a dealer isn’t willing to put up with that then screw them…there is always Jomashop.
@mossa6072 Жыл бұрын
The point is to do all your browsing based on the regular prices and you will be gladly serviced. Do not talk about a deal until the decision has been made and it’s just a matter of final pricing.
