Have you ever heard of Frozen Shoulder? And nope, it’s NOT caused by your rotator cuff freezing during the wintertime. Instead, Frozen Shoulder or Adhesive Capsulitis is a common condition that causes progressive pain and stiffness in the shoulder. While the primary cause is unknown, the secondary causes can range from diabetes and high cholesterol to surgery and past injuries. Once the shoulder becomes “frozen”, it is very difficult to move and limits the range of mobility. FS affects people aged 40 to 60, but in rare cases, can also happen to people younger than 40.
There are three phases to FS. The Freezing Phase is the initial stage where the pain begins but the range of motion is still somewhat there. The Frozen Phase occurs when the pain starts to subside a bit, but the range of motion is now severely reduced. The final stage is the Thawing Phase where the pain has gone down and the range of motion slowly comes back. An important thing to note is that Frozen Shoulder can last from 1-3 years and the individual’s range of motion may not return to 100%.
