I've tried to relate the many photography lighting positions I've learned as I move into videography but found it not exactly/simply a one to one correlation because of the cinematic component. You have resolved that issue with this video and your commentary. Don't get me wrong- I'm not saying photographic lighting and videography lighting are not essentially the same, I'm just finding an added sensibility in continuous video lighting beyond photo lighting. Thank you for condensing the situation into a practical guideline.

I’m glad to have shed some light on the subject for you.😜 I feel the same way coming from a video background, maybe you could make a video on photography lighting for me.😂

@@natebrewer04 🤣😁 Great idea but for 2 things: I'm not a YT content maker and there are so many wonderful photography Lighting pros who have already addressed the subject in K's of videos. Your problem, like mine, will be narrowing it down to the several pro's you like the best. I started with a Godox flash on my Nikon, IOW, 1 flash. The next year added 1 more Godox off-camera 2nd/stronger flash with umbrellas and softboxes, then a 3rd and was then setting up the 3 for all the looks you detailed in this video and several more, including fills. Every step of this progression I was learning from YT videos. Then I whimsically added 3 large GVM-1000D RGB LED lights and said, hmmm, videos might be more fun. 😁😁🤣🤣 Did not realize that only the most basic camera knowledge carries over from photography to videography- steep learning curve, particularly for a 1-person shop! My go-to photography lighting YT pros include but are not limited to: Gavin Hoey (he's the most entertaining), Daniel Norton (he's the most studio professionally experienced), Jay P Morgan of Slanted Lens (he has the most on-scene variations), Lindsay Adler (she is the most modeling proficient), Pye Jirsa of SLR Lounge (he is the most adaptive to scene vs lighting). All IMHO, of course. 😁😁 And there are so many more to choose from. Hope you have a great photography experience❗

Thank you for clearly explaining these terms. Could you do one about lenses? As a filmmaker from scratch, I’m often looking to rely on cinematographers who know more than just the basics.

When using three lights, where should the camera be positioned?
@natebrewer04 Жыл бұрын
Usually the camera will be in front of your subject and your key light(main light) will be at about a 45 degree angle from the camera. Your fill light will be on the opposite side of the key, and your hair light will be back and to the side of the subject. I might make a video on this soon, so stay tuned.

1:30 This is still considered a "cinematic image" look at the amount of light hitting his face in correlation to the background, it's highkey yet being lowkey at the same time. I think anything "cinematic"just calls for the story, and not how much contrast you add to your image.
@natebrewer04 Жыл бұрын
I totally agree, I should have used a different shot for that example. I love that frame (and every single frame from the entire movie:)

So glad that I found this fire channel, looking forward to more videos! BUT... Here are some tips that you can take to improve your channel: 1. Make videos that are less niched What I mean by this is you should aim to make videos that would be interesting to a more broad audience. I'm not saying your camera rig videos aren't good, it's just that they only apply to a very small audience. For your channel, you could make videos like, -How To Improve Your Storytelling -How To Film Videos Like a PRO -Cinematic Camera Movements You get the idea. 2. In this video, try to reduce the amount of pauses and unneeded dialogue. Like in the end, how you are saying "Thank you for watching this video". Don't say it multiple times. It's not really a bad thing, it would just make your Audience Retention worse, because most people will click off at that time. I hope you understand my tips, and apply them in the future, keep up the awesome work man!
