Dear Lou I had reached the point of real frustration with my watercolour. Nothing looked anywhere like those all the KZbin tutorials. I tried everything from simple flowers to portraits. (Landscapes bore me). Then I saw this lesson and it looked really do-able. And it was!! For the first time I am really pleased with my paintings and can't wait to try more of your lessons. I learnt so much more from these simple "exercises" AND - most importantly - it was so satisfying to produce the gorgeous little artworks by the end. It was like learning the piano and getting to play an actual tune after learning all the dreary old chords. So thank you very much for your classes - they have made me hopeful and motivated again. Cheers Gayle (New Zealand)

Hi Gayle, Thank you so much for taking the time to comment. It's wonderful to know that you're feeling motivated to paint and that you liked the paintings you produced, i really hope you'll get a lot of pleasure from your watercolour!

Paper can make or break a painting. I started with cellulose papers as they were affordable and I didn’t know how important 100% cotton was.

I’m so glad I found your video! I just bought a Gansai Tambi Watercolor set (I’m a watercolor newbie) and was getting so frustrated! With this exercise You’ve taught me to start out slowly and get the feel of the brush strokes, not try to tackle an elaborate landscape painting like I was doing. LoL Thank you! 😊

As a beginner and perfectionist / rigid non-artist lol This taught me so much and was surprisingly hard to allow the unknown to happen but it ended up beautiful!! It’s one of my kids favorite paintings and I learned so much about the beauty of mixing on paper. thank you

The answer to your question is YES. All the time. Ok maybe not all of the time but many times I want to paint and I’m not up to using much brain power that a landscape or still life takes. I want to have fun and feel free. These examples you’ve provided are absolutely perfect and they are stunning! Thank you*Thank you so very much for sharing your awesome ideas with us.

Love this! I'm teaching myself watercolor in preparation to teach others. I needed simple ideas because I have a tendency to try for realism. So frustrating when learning a skill, to want to do more than you are capable of. These exercises are great for training the hand and the eye. I also love the look of using latex to cover your white, but you aren't. That last one will definitely make it to my curriculum.

Such enjoyable exercises! I enjoy art in general but am newer to watercoloring (excepting a couple high school projects way back). I was recently asked to teach a weekly watercolor class to 6-9 year olds and have been learning as I go. I just tried all of these exercises today with tube paints, and used four colors instead of five just because. It was simple and helped me practice color mixing, brush control, and value. I’m going to have my kiddos try a version of the middle one. Thank you for your content, Lou!

New Subscriber here. Your exercise in the middle is probably the best warm up exercise I've ever tried. It sure shows you what your brush and paper are capable of and what they are not. I first tried with a W&N Series 7 #6 which was a fail and I switched to a Silver Black Velvet #8 and it was a dream! It sure put my hand control in doing long continuous strokes to the test as well. @LouDavis5 ай бұрын
Thanks! I think in this one I used some patterned washi tape but I don’t nevessarily recommend it - too expensive in the long term. I use cheap masking tape now but stick each piece to my table before adding it to the paper to reduce the stickiness.
