My 10yo son is a brand new goalie and in his first year of league play. We don't do all the different exercises in your videos because he's still young and we want to keep things fun though just watching the videos have been a great help in building his skills. But he's never liked going into a butterfly before watching this video. The tip on using a seat cushion to elevate your knees, simulating wearing all the pads, made all the difference in getting him to practice dropping and stretching. He's now stopping more pucks and getting up or around for the rebounds much faster. Just the seat cushion tip has made him more excited for the upcoming spring season.

Just to add, we don't practice dropping and stretching daily just two or three times a week so he doesn't feel like it's work or training.

Awesome videos lately! So helpful with newer goalies I've been working with. Also with a goalie recovering from injury like myself. I've hit a couple stick times since surgery and feel like ive lost all my bfly speed and was scored 5 hole all day. Thanks for all you do! -NG

@goalietraining
@goalietraining 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, the hip muscles should be working for sure. If you mean you are pushing into a wider flare by digging your toe into the floor and twisting your ankle, to get farther, then 'no' that's now what you should be doing because you can't do that on the ice. You should be using your hip muscles to TRY and actively get a wider flare.

@@goalietraining I watched 10 seconds to be honest. It started with rolling a ball on the foot so it didn't seem to interesting at first. I'm already spending 45 mins a day for the splits front and side. Front because I'm keeping things in balance. So I need something efficient. Btw, I'm an rmt so we have some good remedial exercise courses but nothing as far as what you learned I'm sure. I'm always open to new ideas. By watching some of your videos yt recommended other split type exercises and that how I got on this path of gaining flexibility again but in a wY that doesn't mess up my knees since they already are in so so shape for a 34 year old. Who would have thought 120 second stretches 3 to 4 times a day could damage your knees? That mixed with Brazilian Jiu jitsu didn't help. I'll give it a other shot eventually.. Modified Pnf stretches seem to be the only way for me so far. 30 seconds static stretches can sometimes make my knees and or back worse.

Outer hip pain? My butterfly suffers because I cannot feel as If I can "flare" as the pain is nearly unbearable. PT so far has not helped.
@goalietraining
@goalietraining 3 жыл бұрын
What did the PT find on assessment? How long have you been going to physio? Have they given you home exercises? Do you do them diligently? If you have a good sport physio then they will be doing some manual therapy and giving you some home exercises to work on. If you have been doing those diligently for 6-12 weeks and there hasn't been any improvement, then your physio will probably be referring you back to a sport med doc, orthopaedic surgeon, etc for some imaging. Have you been assessed for hip impingement?
@Riotxsqsh
@Riotxsqsh 3 жыл бұрын
@@goalietraining Hip impingement was in fact confirmed, but I had no idea that was the problem, I worked around the impingement and changed my stance and movement style. I didn't realize that could be the problem and I'm not sure why my physical therapist did not correlate the two. Thank you.

how do I break the habit of getting up out of my butterfly on the same leg
@goalietraining
@goalietraining 3 жыл бұрын
That takes deliberate practice. We all have a side we prefer, so when ever I get out on the ice I deliberately practice with the other side. It's the same as why we always write with the same hand - we COULD write with the other hand, but we aren't very good at it so our body just puts the pen in the same hand every time. When you are on the ice do extra reps on your 'weak' side. When the puck leaves the zone deliberately get up off the 'weak' leg.
