Hey Steven, great content as always, i'm learning all the time, thank you. I wanted to ask if you would think it overkill or not necessary to provide 1 min/30 secs/15 sec (and loops of these) versions of tracks in your Game Pack? It could be added value for the developers, but they might not need shorter versions of a theme, or might they?

Whoa whoa whoa. Lose 5 ppl? Thing about us game devs…is that by the time we look for composers. The game is close to completion. So being greedy could hinder u from a repeat customer…

Hi Steven, quick question: I've never worked on a project before. I'm building a portfolio now, working toward selling game music packs, and will soon after be trying the Twitter DM approach to getting my first paid gig. For someone like me, a total newcomer writing 8-bit-inspired adventure music, how much can I charge per minute? $200? $300? $500? What's an appropriate asking price for my first contract?

Start at $500 and increase by 30% after every project.

With that automated process, does all the rights go to the game developer or composer keeps the rights?

Depends on the licensing terms of each marketplace. But where possible I use this EULA on my site: www.stevenmelin.com/eula This outlines the basic rights. In short, game dev gets to use however they wish in association with their game (game, game trailers, websites, social media, etc.). Game devs who hire for custom music buy exclusive rights, so that’s a very different contract.
