Elvis had perfect hair in the live global show. He hair cut was done perfectly by whoever cut it. I had not noticed the fingernail thing until this video. The haircut made his face look leaner to go with his trim frame. Long live the king

Thankfully, Elvis, made the changes; his hair alone was a great improvement. The night of the concert, which I watched live in 73’ was one of his best-in every sense of the word. Elvis was definitely clear headed and “on top of his game.” What a night….!

Elvis looks great in this Aloha Rehearsal BUT he looked fabulous after the haircut and groomed nails. I think the audience of the Aloha Special filmed live really did enjoy the additional songs in Elvis’s performance then and the many of us who view it now as well! I hadn’t heard about any of this and I really appreciated this video. Thank you!!

@emaddux942: At the rehearsal concert ("Aloha Rehearsal") Elvis looked much better and was much more relaxed. I love the "Aloha Rehearsal Concert". He didn't want to make any mistakes at the live concert and was a little nervous. After all, it was the first worldwide live concert by an artist. 1.5 billion watching - incredible for 1973. he is the king.

His attention to detail is what gave him a stellar career. Even at the end he was not too proud to critique himself and make improvements. We could all learn this lesson. ❤

Yes, I think he is given too little credit for his personal drive & management - perfectionism in all aspects. That wonderful voice & music didn't just happen - he worked at making it all better, for himself & those around him.

I always liked Elvis's hair length much better in the rehearsal concert. Later in the 2nd concert his hair in front was just hanging on his forehead with way too much hairspray, stiff and unnatural looking, the worst I've ever seen his hair look in a performance! His hair looked great when he recorded the insert songs that he recorded earlier right before his performances, like Blue Hawaii, The Hawaiian Wedding Song & Early Morning Rain etc. and this was before he cut it for the second show. I just never cared for the hair spray, stiff look especially when it gets messed up a little. I always admired Elvis's hair when it was longer and how it moved with Elvis's movements as he performed! Great Video, didn't know about the finger nails. Food for thought: The population of the planet in 1973 was 3.92 billion people and with Elvis's Concert being seen by 1.5 billion people that's literally approaching half the population of the planet at the time! Pretty Cool!

I had only noticed the haircut and I preferred him with longer hair and a bit messy which in my opinion made him look younger. Watch him in the rehearsal as he sings American Trilogy and at one point (near the end), he looks back and has hair on his forehead, I think he was really gorgeous!!!

I've watched Aloha and the rehearsal hundreds and hundreds of times from the first time I saw it just a few months after he passed. I probably saw it 5-6 times on TV before wearing out my Blockbuster rental, then purchasing the VCR tape before buying the Deluxe set around 2002. I would have never caught the fingernail issue. The hair situation I've known for years. Ok. The setlist. As I'm sure you know, producer Marty Pasetta tells an intriguing story about how they produced the show about ten minutes light and Elvis told him, "No problem. Do this, this and that. Done." Right on time. Those were great editions to the show since the setlist had too many ballads. It would've been great to see Elvis do his regular 1972 setlist for a few reasons. #1 the selection of modern rock songs were some of his best concert songs - Proud Mary, Never Been to Spain, Polk Salad Annie. I also would like to have seen him do more of his 50's classics. I have always thought it strange that he said, "I'd like to do a medley of some of my records for you" and then he doesn't do a medley. He just sings Love Me. He usually followed that up with All Shook Up, Teddy Bear/Don't Be Cruel and Heartbreak Hotel as you know. Yes, he was sick of those songs at that point, but that's what people wanted to hear. That's what I would've wanted to hear. And that's what made his legend originally. I am glad that he added up tempo songs like Johnny B Goode (even though it's nothing close to his rocking 1969 versions) and what I have always thought was a killer medley of Long Tall Sally/Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On. It has much more groove to it than the later 50's medley with Long Tall Sally, Whole Lotta Shakin, Flip Flop & Fly, Mama Don't Dance, Jailhouse Rock and Hound Dog. The James Burton solo is great as usual and I love how Elvis sings Whole Lotta Shakin' with the growls included - "Shake Baby Shake-rrrrhhhh." Thanks for the awesome videos. You are doing a great job of honoring the greatest of all-time and protecting and keeping his legacy alive.

Great comment man. A lot of great points you made. It’s a good thing he did add some up-tempo numbers because the ballads were slowing it down. I like both shows for different reasons. The rehearsal is more relaxed, but the live show was on point! No messing up of lyrics.. Even looked more trim.

Patty Perry (also Parry) met elvis in L.A. in 1960. Soon after, she became a friend, trusted insider and honorary kid sister to Elvis. Patty is sometimes noted as the only female member of the memphis mafia Being a talented hair stylist, she could give Presley a trim whenever he was in L.A. or if his usual stylist (Larry Geller) wasn’t around. She also did Priscilla’s hair for awhile. For the “Aloha From Hawaii” TV special in ‘73, Patty was flown out to give Elvis a touch up prior to the broadcast-a haircut that was seen by more than 1 billion people in the first ever worldwide entertainment broadcast! Rehearsal footage shows the king looking a bit shaggier than the well coiffed guy seen on the live telecast two days later. “Patty look,” Elvis said when she arrived in Honolulu, “I’ve gotten really thin…I feel really good.”

I think the extreme diet and likely very little sleep from the anxiety of the upcoming show was the reason he looks tired. He was tired! I always thought his voice sounded weak in cc rider but I was always relieved that he was able to get those pipes in full gear for the songs that counted like trilogy, what now my love and others. Those were all performed with greatness only Elvis could deliver. Thanks for another great video!

Hi, David! I've just learned by now that Elvis watched himself rehearsing and took a look at these details, although I know his moto T.C.B. and its meaning. Really cool video! I never knew about his fingernails. Lol. Did you know he gave his belt from his costume, to actor Jack Lord , and Bill Belew had to scramble to make another one in time! He also added a different middle part to the song "Fever " that he didn't do during the live broadcast. And he had trouble with the words to "Burning Love"and said to the audience, "I forgot all of the words"😂 He was so cool and relaxed always! What a great show the rehearsal was itself! Thank goodness we have that on film as well!! Really nice video David!! 👍 Also, does anyone also think that Elvis looked tired in the rehearsal show? Maybe he was getting used to the time change being in Hawaii! I was exhausted going from Albuquerque to Los Angeles, then 5 hours to Hawaii back in '89 , so I know it probably affected him a little!!

I agree 👍 with you that Elvis looked really tired, and never really moved around much. Some people said that Elvis was told not to move around to much because they didn't want him to look hot and sweaty. My opinion is he had been on a 500cal a day diet for a few weeks leading up to Aloah, so was weak and tired. Apparently he lost 28lbs in a few weeks. Not good for the body.

Other changes were made like hands/mic position while he was standing facing backup singers during An American Trilogy (after he says "sing it, fellows") Also I think he probably told Charlie Hodge not to make the noise he made at about 1.:37 of the same song during the rehearsal concert, as it seemed to startle Elvis and he lost his balance a little and Charlie made no such noise in the next show.

And sad, sad song I'm so lonesome I could die. Also, he was very overweight and sweating so profusely during a promo interview that the show's director Marty Pasetta told him straight " ..and Elvis, you must lose weight..." I personally like Elvis with the messier hair. That’s one of the things I liked the most about the 1970 concert I love seeing his hair disheveled. I really love seeing his hair when just naturally getting messy. To me it’s one of the things that show how involved and how much he puts into a show also when he’s moving around it’s really beautiful to see his hair moving around and getting messier

My three guesses before finishing this video: 1. His hair 2. The way that the audience was lit 3. I've heard that an extra song had to be added in order to fill the time allotted for the satellite feed, so I'm guessing that.

It is obvious that Elvis was on medication when the show starts, partially to calm his nerves at the incredible audience size I would think. What is a shame is that when he performs, "Big hunk" he is totally warmed up and enjoying himself, I just wish the live performance part of the show could have been a bit longer. It really was the pinnacle of his superstardom.

So funny about his nails. If you look at old pictures from the late 50's, it appears that he bit his nails down to the quick. I guess he ended that habit. I love both shows. But, I feel he looked better in the live show on the 14th.

I knew he added more songs as they needed a 60 minute concert. The finger nails is very observant on your part, I never would have caught that. As for the haircut, personally I liked his hairstyle he was sporting at the Madison Square Garden interview and concert. I really think that was his best look. Of the two aloha concerts I liked his hairstyle in the rehearsal show better then the "live show", It just looked more natural. I under stand the need to "pretty him up" as he was going on, as he says world wide television and his hair did look awesome, and held up well, that is until that chick ran her fingers through his hair messing it up (which you can tell pissed him off judging by his reaction). Anyway I just like the more natural look of the rehearsal show. . Great video as usual, thank you!

-------On the Delux DVD set, I have (what I believe to be) all available content including the rehearsal. Part of me finds the rehearsal refreshing, but you're right, it was not as polished and his appearance needed tweaking. Also odd was that before & after Aloha, Elvis live shows were still pretty energetic, albeit Aloha was mellow. Not sure if the trip tired him out. Some speculated his diet did this, but by this point he should have been feeling better after being on it for a while and dropping weight.
