3 Things I love and Hate About Negan

Hello everyone, in this video I go through 3 things that I love, and 3 things that I hate about the TV show version of Negan. I've re-uploaded this video due to a mistake as kindly pointed out by "soap pruna". Please let me know your thoughts below, I hope you enjoy the video.

He recruits the best out of every community he comes across. He sees the potential in Carl, the toughness in Daryl, and the effectiveness and cunning of Sasha and through rewarding them and being somewhat fair and giving them choice, he attemps to appeal to them to recruit them in his army. Anyone would want those people in the group on their side. Negan has an established system that is regulated through rules, awards, diciplin, and loyalty. I have yet to see Rick reward his people and create a system that is huge, self-sustainable, and diplomatic. Negan is the defenition of dominance. The way he carries himself, his gaze, his proximity, his speech patterns, his confident attitude, he's a complete person. Negan killed 2 of Rick's men as apposed to appromiately 40 men that Rick and his people have kille. Perspective is everything.

Good points, but Rick is fair with EVERYBODY, or at least tries to be. What about the people Negan doesn’t see fit to recruit into his army? They have to slave away for him or they die. Rick was all about unity and peace for the communities, while Negan just took everything, leaving the communities with scraps. And his “punishments” were way too cruel & unfair to justify. And keep in mind, Rick killed Negan’s men at the outpost because they were terrorizing Hilltop. Had the saviors been fair, and better all-around people, Hilltop wouldn’t have asked Rick to do that. Negan terrorized communities, he wasn’t a good leader, he was a merciless tyrant. Rick was and still is the better man here.

@@Jackster281 Well firstly, you don't have to be a goodie goodie to be a good leader, Negan is without a doubt one of the greatest leaders we have seen as he has made the first true country we have ever seen in the walking dead, a line of communities, a system of governance, protection for people, he built the first country we saw and from what we know he kept it going for a very long time, most good leaders weren't good people and its the same with Negan. And with the slave stuff, this also goes into him being a good leader, he built the first real economy, they weren't slaves, they got paid points which they used to by food, water, clothing, ect and in exchange they were protected within the walls of Negans base, not that this is the greatest of systems but its much much better than the system Rick came up with which was from we have seen people were just given what they needed or took whatever they wanted, Negan built the first real economic system which wasn't a tribal type of trading. He did take stuff from groups, usually half of what they made or less, which was bad but this doesn't exactly make him a bad leader, he wanted resources, he didn't want to give away his peoples things for resources, he did something which was a fairly good system of getting his people resources while also protecting all the communities he got resources from so they can keep producing. Was this a good system? Yes, was it a morally good system? No, but you don't need to be good morally to be a good leader. Rick to me has never really been a good leader but he has been much much better morally.

Hitler is bad I agree but you know he literally took over all of mainland Europe right? Something no other person in history has ever done? Rick is also like a dictatorship, he has NEVER led through democracy and he leads just like Negan, his word is final, there is no difference in the system of dictatorships they use. Did Rick give his people a choice in being a dictatorship? No, it was Rick's way or die just as it was Negan's way or die.

One: it is the writing of the show, not the actor. Don't refer to it as JD's portrayal being bad in that way, refer to it as how the character is written. He tries to get Sasha and Daryl over to his side so he could use them to control Rick's group. That is why he tried to get Rick to join him.

Negan reminds me of Ghenghis Khan - he also recruited his enemies to work for him. In fact there is a famous story of Ghenghis Khan making an enemy one of his most trusted generals after the man tried to kill him in battle by shooting an arrow at him.

I thought the shitting pants scene was really good. In my mind he's my 3rd favourite character. He's doing a really good fucking job imo. One line I felt didn't quite fit well in the show was "Did you pick that gun cause it looks cool?" because Carl knows full well how to use an assault rifle. While in the comics, Carl has no experience using an assault rifle so the line makes a lot more sense.

JDM’s portrayal of his character was so much better than the writing for him. I’d actually say that for every character on the show except for maybe Shane, but Shane was supposed to be direct and a bit brutish with his dialogue so he didn’t need great dialogue writing. Correct me if I’m wrong. The dialogue in this show is about as deep and narratively expressive as an auto tune rapper. The actors and set design/makeup really make this show

4:20 that was because the show missed a crucial step in negan and carl's relationship, instead of rosita shooting lucille it was actually carl in the comics which caused negan to start disliking carl immediately after, negan expresses that he felt betrayed by carl.

Negan tendency to recruit enemies is very consistent with his character for at least two reasons: The first being his self confidence which make him careless and act with hubris. The second reason is the fact that he respect tough people and think that the feeling can be reciprocated what is in line with his world views. And as a bonus a third reason, Negan is a self absorbed bastard that thinks the world spin around him, and for this reason he always think he is in control. Obviously outside logical reasons, there is some amount of plot armor on some main characters that protect them on circumstances that they should beat the dust.

I think i prefer TV Negan to comic Negan. I can't help but read Negan as a vulgar power hungry oaf. I only liked Negan for the effect he had, solidifying the relationships between the different survivor communities. Thanks to JDM, i like Negan for Negan. Morgan's delivery and charm really cuts away the pre-existing image i had for Negan.

The only/biggest thing that I don't like about him is that he survives some questionable events (and still stays that confident). Examples (Season 7): -Getting shot by Rosita (instead of being happy for his luck/survival, he is angry that his bat/Lucille was shot), -Carl not shutting Negan when he had the chance (even though Carl was about to shoot him, Negan was still kinda too confident, sure he had one guy before him, but that really shouldn't be enough), -Negan barely escapes, and still shows middle finger through the truck window (there were people shooting at his truck). (Season 8, not so bad, but worth mentioning): - (Episode 1) Rick says that he will kill him, but Negan just confidently/like always walks outside. -(Recent episode) Rick has the bat/Lucille and doesn't hit Negan's head (with wired part, Rick could at least try that and maybe damage Negan's hand or something...sure this on is not on Negan, but still counts, he survived, kinda undamaged). Also when Rick falls out of the window he could shoot Negan.

A good villain is actually scary, yet the viewer wants to know more about them and why they behave the way they do. Scary villains were the Termites, the Wolves, and even randos that they meet along the way. Neegan is not scary.

A different side to a psychopath? Looking for the good huh? Which is what many people do when someone is bad enough instead of complete hatred which they deserve people try to balance it with qualities that come nowhere near redeeming them. Bashing glens brains out while taunting him sadistically after having already killed Abraham vs. Some half way funny one liners. This is often true in life as well as art. Hannibal lecter could be another example. I don't know what drives this.

That last one about him recruiting just about everyone who tries to kill him is so on point. That happens once in the comics with Carl and it works so much more because Rick's group had only killed a few Saviors on the road before Negan showed up to "punish them". Instead of the show where they slaughter a good 40-50 of Negan's men before he shows up (which makes him killing Glenn and Abe feel extremely tame), and so it makes less sense that he'd want to give all of his assassins a position in his ranks. Daryl throws a slug at him? He imprisons him but offers him a new Dwight-style job. Carl shows up to kill him and shoots two of his guys? He gives him a tour of his base, brings him home, and feeds him spaghetti. Eugene makes a bullet for someone to kill him? He literally gives him such a high up position that he has control over a lot of the saviors. Sasha tries to assassinate him? He wants to recruit her as a soldier. None of these make sense, not even the Carl one, because of how many men he already lost at the hands of them. Even if it was just the Carl scene it wouldn't work because they blew their load in season 6 by having them butcher so many Saviors.

the one thing i do agree with was the finale when he was gonna kill carl. made zero sense based on his and carl’s story line. not sure if he said it before or after, that carl was gonna be one of his “top guys in a few years” so i thought that was a glaring flaw.

The humour in the s7 ep1 'vampire bat' scene is there so that you feel really uneasy. The whole episode is about making you feel uncomfortable as you watch Rick get humiliated endlessly. Also the reason he tries to recruit the enemy is because Negan both knows a lot of his men are scumbags and loyal to him out of fear and that they are very skilled and wasted on Rick. Negan genuinely wants a better world, he knows someone like Carl or Daryl will actually be a lot better in the long run working with him.

I feel like your last hate points are easily explained. The reason Negan recruits his enemies is because he's so damn confident that he can break anyone and make them side with him, he doesn't see an issue with doing it. Plus, he's well aware he has an army that would die for him if he told them to. So if the enemies betrayed him, they would be dead shortly after anyway. As for Negan going after Carl despite him showing his feelings towards him...You seem to be trying to see Negan as a person instead of the irrational psychopath he is. He might be fond of Carl, but that doesn't mean he doesn't see him as anything more than a tool for him to use. Plus, he hates Rick. If he can use Carl to hurt Rick, he will definitely do that at the first opportunity. Personally I liked him from the moment he came on screen. He is a fucking lunatic and is so confident in his abilities that he will crack awful jokes like Lucille being a vampire bat because he thinks he's hilarious and can get away with that kind of shit. I think his character is fascinating and I look forward to starting season 8. (I recently watched 1-7 to catch up)

I do not agree with that last comparison about Negen's situation being the same as Rick recruiting that guy from Terminus. That guy had nothing likable about him and I'm glad he died as quickly as he did. There's definitely a difference with someone assaulting you or killing your men vs. eating them. Would ANYONE want to put a crazy cannibal on their team not knowing if he's going to try to eat them? You would have to support his need for eating people. You do make a good point by questioning Negan's actions but they are later on justified, just as Jesus and Morgan believe in redeeming people, Negan can turn them into a valuable resource.

I feel like the only person who doesn't find Negan even vaguely funny. I'm no prude, but fuck, man, he's basically a comic book villain in a show that used to be so grim and gritty. I never sat there watching the Governor and thought, "Man, this guy's intimidating, but I wish he'd talk about his nuts more." When Shane turned antagonist, I didn't wish he had 50% more leans and shit-eating grins. I'm just so over Negan, personally. The piss-poor quality of seasons 7 and 8 certainly haven't helped, either. Any complexity to his character is wasted because he just goes right back to leaning, shit-eating-grinning, and acting jocular in the middle of the apocalypse.
