actually not, imo. Deaths of main characters don't always have to be overly dramatic and complicated. In fact a bite is the best kind of death in this situation. Keeping the zombies real as a overall, ever-there thread. SPECIALLY because he survived so much things like a shot in the head I think the bite is so ironic and sad that it's good.

Killing Carl is basically killing off the future of the Walking Dead. Carl is supposed to become the leader that Rick can/could never be. We spent years watching Rick fail at being a leader, Carl is supposed to learn from his failures.

Explain how Rick failed as a leader please? Other than the stupid idea of letting the walkers out of the quarry, he did a pretty good job leading them to Alexandria... and then rallying them to rebel from Negan. He was a farmer when needed, and an assassin when needed. His group has grown and prospered over the years. They all love him, even when they disagree with him. That being said, TWD jumped the shark years ago and is trash now.... but it's not Rick's fault. It's because you can't keep recycling the same garbage for years without it getting stale.

Rick went insane after Lori died. Why the hell would he be thinking of peace with Negan after his sons death? First of all Negan had nothing to do with Carl death, there is no connection. That flashback was ridiculous, the Carl I have been familiar with couldn't wait to fight for his home, his family. The carl I knew lost respect for his father when they gave Negan half their shit. The Carl I knew fought by his father's side when they started the war with Negan in the last episode of season 7, he went to hilltop to help make plans against the saviors, he was preparing traps against Negan and the saviors, he was proud that his father was fighting back. That flashback was corny and was not like Carl at all.

Whenever i see or hear an explanation of Gimple's choices for the show i feel a deep burning anger inside, more than what i felt about whatever it is he's explaining. He killed Carl because he couldn't come up with an emotion and motive for Rick on his own? What the fuck even is that. This current load of bollocks rivals his bullshit diatribe on the talking dead after the season 6 finale explaining away the cliffhanger debacle. How utterly pathetic he also was on Talking dead after this finale to refuse to confirm Carl's imminent death by not explicitly saying he will die, so he can continue to court that stupid hysteria and intrigue in the mid season break of fan theories and what if's. Chris Hardwick can be annoying, but I do find him occasionally amusing, lately only when I have been coerced into watching TTD to hear what Scott Gimple as a guest has had to say about his various horrible decisions. I was curious what he would say about Carl getting "secretly" bitten back in Episode 6. His weak reply was, "I was surprised more people didn't pick up on that" [to the best of my memory. that Carl got bitten back in Episode 6]. Not one person called him out on that either, which was unrealistic in my view especially considering the fan backlash. Asshats. Maybe they could have hidden it even better instead of only making it incredibly vague, and then leaving it unmentioned until the end of the midseason finale two whole episodes later! Fear The Walking Dead rocks! It became comical and tedious though on TTD when the crossover character Morgan's Lennie James called it "Fear 'Of' The Walking Dead" no less than 3 times, all the while looking like the kid who got singled out of the class for punishment.

That explanation that Gimple gave about Carl's death is prime example of one of the main reasons I dislike the show: "...make Carl this humanitarian blah blah". The lack of continuity with the characters (out of character). Changing the mindset/philosophy of a character from episode to episode is terrible storytelling. These 'hardened' characters are constantly having mental breakdowns and abandon their friends and family to go on suicide missions. When they come to a good place in the story it's hard to enjoy because you think of all the retarded shit the writers did to get to that point...the cheap plot devices. /rant

An economist here, so I thought I would throw in my perspective. First, thanks for the video. Excellent analysis and thought-provoking. Second, TWD has become a victim of its very own success. Had it only become popular rather than “mega popular“, the financial pressure on the show would have been much less. There is a reason literally all the actors hired on the show were virtually unknown-tier 3 actors at best. Such “workers“ have very little market power, and therefore work cheap. However, NOW the actors are not unknown. They are beloved, established, and they have more market value within the show. They know this and their agents know this. Economically, the show did not merely have meteoric ratings, it made meteoric profits, because producers were able to “exploit“ long-term contracts with at the time, again, relatively unknown actors. However, those contracts have started to expire. Reportedly, now just the characters of Rick, Darryl, Michone, and Carol now make up HALF of actor payroll. Hence, I would bet $100 against a nickel, that the PRIMARY reason for killing off Carl, was economics. I find great parallels here with Game of Thrones (GOT). It too was a victim of its own success. It once, in my opinion, was the greatest show to ever grace television… (Remember, it was not that popular in its first season)... but the last couple seasons have been an absolute exercise in absurdity. The actors are making orders of magnitude more money now than they were in the beginning (via new contracts) and the show is simply considerably less profitable for its producers than it was in the beginning. It’s pretty clear, the producers are ready for the show to end. No I don’t think producers of TWD, what the show to end, but payroll does have to be managed, and certain actors were able to negotiate incredible new contracts, which forces producers to make some very hard decisions. Assuming a producer believes the vast majority of people will keep watching no matter what, killing off a highly popular character, makes great economic sense.

Sounds silly that the producers didn't anticipate how the show's success wouldn't include the increased popularity and potential value of the actors involved. If their concern for money outweighed their dedication towards creating a great show, then they deserve the backlash they get for making poor decisions. The actors are the ones bringing the show to life for the viewers so why not reward them with better contracts if the show continues to be successful? Why risk turning a successful show into a mediocre mess because of money? Sounds like their concern for money only brought in less money and hurt potential spin off series, movies, etc.

The worst part is even Kirkman has said that he regrets having let Negan live in the comics. He fell in love with his own villain and outsmarted himself by keeping him around. Now the show's brain trust are going to repeat his mistake but are going to have even worse reasons for doing so.

Negan's one of the best things about TWD right now, which is half the problem with the show. They've screwed up the story line and other characters so much that Negan seems to be the only person who knows what he's doing and is any good at getting it done. The problem is Negan is not nearly as cool as people think he is -- fans and show writers alike -- and plenty of people don't want to watch a show that is about the guy who beat several characters they liked to death. With due respect to Kirkman, if he had Maggie spare Negan for anything less than the best of reasons, then he's writing fantasy, not some approximation of reality. In real life people aren't fascinated with the inner complexities of the mass murders who slew their loved ones nor is everyone so craven and servile that they neglect to get even when the opportunity arises.

You're not telling the story of Inception. You screwed up All Out War with the jumping around and making the audience guess what's going on. Character motivations should be clear by this point, and if you let the audience in on the plans for All Out War, we might just find it more interesting.

Let him somehow REDEEM himself just the way Dwight found a way to do; just like Eugene is gonna have to find his own way! Instead of killing Carl, he could have SAVED his life somehow... the key is Maggie, he could have saved her somehow! I am a fan of JDM's work and his work is what makes me want his character SO DEAD, lol. I read the comics, that's not what it is for me, I just don't want a LAME RICK! Carl is a great character in the comics. And his relationship with Andrea was great as well. Crazy to think about Carl and Andrea being such popular characters in the comics but in the show both are killed off prematurely and neither is liked very much by the fan base.

+predatoure well in all fairness, at least in my opinion, neither of the characters comic counterparts were the same at all. Andrea in the comics and Carl in the comics were above and beyond better than the shows characters. Andrea in the show was incredibly annoying firstly. She wasn't "supermodel" attractive like she appears in the comics either. She is truly a legendary badass in the comics and it never translated at all in the show. Carl was the same honestly. His comic book character was much more "kickass" than his timid counterpart.

I appreciate it all the more for you not being a fan of Carl and yet you are still able to see and talk about the obvious reasons why people have the right to be upset and why people shouldn't just be okay with this. All over KZbin I've seen people saying defending this horrible decision, even claming this was good writing on the show's part and disregarding everyone else's opinion despite having no possible foundationss to justify their own stances. It annoys me to see people not realizing that what hey are supporting are mediocre decisions and that is why the show keeps declining. I do have to say though, Car is one of my favorite characters since Chandler and I are close in age and when I began watching the show it was easier for me to empathize with him. I've always felt like no one in the show has bothered to give him the proper screen time to have him become a more compelling character for other people as well. The funny thing is, like you said, I haven't been vocal about my complaints with the show because I'm too invested in it, I have spent too much time engaged on tWD just to quit and to be honest, this show will always be special to me, so ever since the dumpster incident I have acknowledged the mistakes silently, made my critics then waited for the show to get back to what it was, to get better. But the accumulation of dumb stuff just kept me losing faith, this season had transcurred in a lackluster manner but the tonal shift was still a bit better than the previous season according to some , and then they had to go and do THIS when I was expecting them to have learned from previous mistakes. This was the breaking point for me. I'll keep watching because again, I don't think there is anythng they can do to make me stop watching permanently but I don't imagine the show recovering from this stupider than stupid 'creative choice' to kill Carl.

I really enjoyed this video! I’m not a comic reader, so my only reference is the TV show and I was looking forward to Carl taking more of a leadership role, especially after Rick/Michonne’s comments to Carl. Re: TTD, I really enjoy the show and Hardwick’s enthusiasm. However, *to me*, the 808 discussion seemed very strained-as if he didn’t want to offend by asking WTH were they thinking. I'm done. Completely done. I was a fan for four years, never missed an episode, and even attended a Walking Dead tour last year (had a BLAST, one of the best days of my life!). I love the first five seasons, because the story was well told, the characters were so compelling, and the show never really lost focus of what and who it was about (it was about the survivors, but it was always Carl's story). Even when it would lose it's footing here or there, it got right back up, so the pros outweighed the cons. But I give up. While I'll always treasure those first five seasons, I'm just going to write off the past three seasons because they were so god awful in nearly every department. The dialogue sounds like an edgy 12 year old who thinks they know what "deep" is wrote it. The plotholes are never covered, or blatantly ignored because "laziness". The CGI is laughable, nothing looks authentic so I can't take it seriously like I used to because it's so distracting but so obviousky BAD! The pacing is mind numbingly boring and slow, the show used to cover storylines in two episodes, but they take SIX to wrap anything up so wathey waste time with worthless filler (and stupid pretentious five minute close up shots of character faces). And the cliffhangers didn't help their case at all. I'm so fed up. I don't have to waste my time on a show that's become a lost cause. Gimple has destroyed this show, and killing Carl was unfortunately the last straw for me. There are other fantastic television shows that treats their audience (and story/characters) with FAR more respect than this show, even Fear The Walking Dead. This show is irredeemable trash now.

I agree with lots of what you said, accept the part about it always being Carl's story. The show has always been Rick's story, from the 1st episode until now. It seems like Carl will eventually become the lead in the comic, but even in that, so far it has still been Rick's story. Carl's story in the show so far; Rick finds Carl, Carl gets shot. Carl lives. Carl gets shot again. Carl lives. Carl meets a girl. Carl saves a guy. Carl gets bitten. Carl wasn't even close to being the central focus of the show, even Andrea that died in season 3 seemed to have more screen-time, Daryl definitely has, so has Carol. Carl barely did anything. Don't get me wrong though, I'm not defending the dumbass decision to kill him off. Carl is a great character in the comic, but got the Andrea treatment on the show.

Loved the video! If I were to take a stab in the dark regarding the decision, I would think it's because (despite what we might have heard) they are starting to wrap up the show in the near future and allow FTWD take its place. By the time the war is over, the Saviors will have been the focal point for 2.5 seasons, far longer than any other antagonist, and not even the Whisperer War can top it from a build up standpoint. They already said they wanted the show and the comics to end differently, and I'm sure Andrew Lincoln would like to eventually move on to bigger and better things rather than be chained to this show for another decade. The finale of All Out War and showing the slow and gradual reconstruction of society as a series finale would be, at least in my opinion, a satisfying way of ending the show and allowing FTWD to take the reins while diehard fans of TWD can continue the adventures of Rick and company in the comments. What do you think?

I think it's pretty damned stupid myself...for instance, why would all those people (survivalists mind you) down in the supply bunker, sit back and let a teenage girl take control?! That whole episode was so STUPID!!! It killed me how she sits down and makes some calculations to figure out how much air they have left, then starts killing volunteers based on that info she pulled out of her ass!!! Then on top of it, SHE has to do ALL of the killing, presumably because she was the only one out of all those people (again, survivalists) with the guts to do it! Then she blames it all on her mom and takes off on her own! My God, that episode alone makes ANY episode of TWD look like the final episode of Breaking Bad! Thanks for this. Some people were pissy at me for not liking the episode because of my favorite character dying but now I'm mad at the bad writing. It was so forced and you could clearly see it was a last minute choice to shock the fans. Carl was soooooooooo out of character and his death was pathetic. Did they forget all the stuff he went through? Did they forget who Rick is? Do they honestly think that Carl's talk to him would work? Hell it wouldn't have even work on me and I adore him. All excited and amped up and wow that eouside was so awesome oh my gosh what a great episode week after week after week - no matter how bad the episode may have sucked. predatoure I hope you don't give up on Fear before season 3! My experience with FTWD:I half ass enjoyed season 1, and I was entertained by season 2 even less. Season 2, I would get a few weeks behind and binge it while bored. After how intriguing Season 3 ep 1 and 2 were, I faithfully bought each episode asap,after midnight on sundays. ( no cable) With each episode of season 3, I was more impressed, and glued to the screen. The cinematography is fantastic. The characters ( except for botox faced Madison) are fabulously acted. They are more importantly, written to behave in the zombie apocalypse, a raw and realistic way. By the finale, I was feeling guilty for enjoying Fear 3 more than TWD s7. I am now more excited for season 4 than I am for TWD s8b. I think there is much more going on with Morgan being the crossover character, but that is another story some other time. Have you read all the mysteriously creepy interview answers from Gimple, Lincoln and Lennie James?

Thank you for this. I have loved the show since it started, and lately have been grappling with my vaguely defined frustrations with it. I tend to get knee-jerk defensive when I come across complaints on the Internet about TWD (usually because they have the critical insight of “show is stoopid and yur dum for liking it still”), but this was so carefully laid out and reasonable that I find myself agreeing utterly with you. I too hope the show can recover, but the track record for shows this far in is not good. Those festering problems that showrunners either ignore or can’t see don’t just go away come the ninth season. That said, the coming time jump would be a good place to shake things up behind the scenes, so I won’t lose all hope. After all, like you, I’m here for the long haul.

Bomberman i kinda see your point about the comics but when you look deep into the reason why Rick lost his hand it makes sense and here is why. First up they live in a dangerous world and if we are being real people should have at least braces/scars along the way though must characters journey to show us that the world is dangerous and anyone can get hurt/ killed at any time and to be honest the show/comics would be a joke if no character got hurt/killed of and people losing at least a leg or an arm is quite realistic because there aint much doctors in that world they live in so if anything it should be more easy for characters to at least get injured because they isn't much safe ways of getting things done. Bomberman the reason why people are also pissed of why carl killed because if you rewatch season 2 it proves that shane and rick ex wife was right that rick is a failure because remember how shane was saying that rick is unable to protect Carl and that and rick ex wife saying that she was worried about carl living a short crul life that turns out to be true sadly. I would have to agree though as a writer if you are adapting a book/story/comic and a main character is dead and then not you would have to decide which way to go. If I don't kill him and the source material never says I now have to create a way for the character to be captured. Which is difficult with this character because he is hated and doesn't seem like the kind of guy to be captured. He seems more the cyanide pill kind of guy to me. I've also said for a long time that people have to remember the show is not the book. I've heard already of people alive who should be dead, people dead who should be alive, etc.

I'm not very well informed so I have a question that may be obvious but I honestly don't know: so a "show runner" (Gimple in this case), is it like a head executive or a head writer or both? I always assumed it was a head writer that takes care of the overarching story but had no say in executive choices (orders from the AMC suits in this case). I assumed if the AMC execs say "end it in a cliff hanger" then the writers have to end it in a cliff hanger, "fire that Carl actor" then write Carl's death etc etc. I don't know though because I don't know exactly what a "show runner" is.

Tbh, that was a great finale to the build up of Negan and the Saviors. Great Negan intro. You're ignoring everything about the episode and shitting on the single fact that they didn't show the identity of the victim at the end. It wasn't a big deal. Would have it made the episode a lil better? Yep, but we still got to see the conclusion of all of that and thats what counts. In your opinion, why would it have been better to show the death at the end of the S6 finale rather than the premiere of S7? I think the best thing they could do for the show right now is to reduce the amount of episodes in a season to 13. It would challenge the writers and perhaps create a better more well put together season.

The S6 Finale could have been the best episode of the show. The build-up of suspense and tension was handled excellently. The cliffhanger was bad because it felt as though it had been engineered in a way to drive up viewers for the following season. It would have been better to end the season at the actual conclusion of that part of the story, after Negan killed Abe and Glen and leaves. The episode up to that point was great, as you mention, but it is completely fair to dub the episode bad because of its ending. I can bake the best cake in the world, but if I ice it with shit, its a shit cake.

I'm torn between agreeing and disagreeing with you, you're completely right about Rigg's acting chops, his performances are often cringeworthy and he just doesn't carry the physicality for the role. That being said I didn't think his performance in the finale was all that bad. On the whole though, weak actor. I disagree because you can't replace Carl, he is the protagonist's son and arguably the second protagonist of this story. You can give somone elements of Carl's arc from the comics, which is clearly what they'll do, but they won't resonate nearly as much as they would if it were about Carl, mediocre acting or no.

Modest Mouse While that father/son arc may be absent from the show, there is still a story still left to be told for Judith and Rick. How Lori and Carl died may affect how Rick treats Michonne and Judith. Maybe he will be more strict and cruel for the sake of protecting his own. I think Henry being the comic book Carl wouldn’t be as effective as the comics, but would still be very good if acted and written well. Plus, having Henry be raised by a badass carol would be dope, especially since Henry’s actor is Sophia’s brother. And that could go to show a cool difference between Carol/Sophia and Carol/Henry. I agree, Chandlers acting wasn’t bad this episode. He’s still a bit stiff, but he isn’t that bad when he is performing Carl as a more caring and understanding person. Chandler really crumbles when he has to act like he is mad or badass. Just doesn’t work for him, for some reason.

If they do the gap between all out war and the whisperers and age Judith up enough to be a full time cast member, They wouldn't really miss a beat and we'd have a whole new and meaningful relationship for Rick to explore and compare with Carl's. I like the parallels you draw and i'd be fine with Henry coming in and taking most of Carl's comic arc, he may have only been around for a season or two but he's got a solid backstory, which, funnily enough, is more developed than most of the main characters on the show. Good analysis, but I will say that Carl needed to go because Chandler Riggs is not a good actor. Carl did not really have any storylines revolving around him on the show, just a few individual episodes, and surely the producers & writers felt that given Chandler Riggs' lack of thespian talents, they could not take Carl on the show to the places where Carl has gone to in the comics.

I'd disagree. I mean a lot of the acting isn't mind blowing, but most is at least adequate. Chandler Riggs was one of the biggest exceptions, he was almost always awful, and he actually made the other actors look worse for having to interact with him... Maybe he's not the worst, but off the top of my head he's the one I can point to as being the worst. At least out of everyone currently living in the show.

At least I'm not the only person who can't stand Hardwick! Although I don't mind Negan being kept alive in the comics, I don't think it makes much sense for the TV show. Rick has been talking about killing Negan constantly for the last 2 seasons and now suddenly he's going to change his mind? I don't buy it. Unfortunately AMC seem more concerned with putting out as many episodes as possible - rather than creating a solid story. If the show contained 8-10 episodes a season instead of 16, I'm sure more of the filler content wouldn't be present.

Carl's death is almost exactly like Dale's death. Both characters leave why sooner than their comic book counterparts. Both died because of drama within the actors and creations. Both were killed by a walker in unreasonable circumstances. Both characters were pacifists right before they died, (though Dale was always a pacifist, at least his character was consistent), and both of their deaths determined the action of other characters and made them pacifists as well.
