What a lovely random question... Had to look up the english word for Kreppband: masking tape. And sometimes sticky tape as well. Except for the huge cardboard/wall paper "Don't blink" thingy, that's too heavy, so it's nailed to the wall.

Just to clear things up: My hair is, in fact, dip dyed blue and, more importantly, I haven't worn a scunchie since the early nineties. I don't own scunchies. Yikes.

Although I must say my teachers were great once I found out I had a problem, and any I'll feelings passed quickly, over the proceeding three years I built up so much respect and admiration for them that now I'm studying to be teacher myself. Moral of the story is be kind to kids who struggle with stuff like that, there might be more to it than meets the eye.

When you tell people to make an effort in writing. You seem to forget that those works are often written under time pressure and at the end there has to be a certain amount written to get a good grade. I can tell from from experience that whenever I had to hand in homework I needed double the amount of time to readably copy it.

I have horribly messy handwriting myself but that is due to my dyspraxia. Luckily all through out school I was able to type up any work that was needed and I was even allowed to use a computer in all of my exams. If there are students that always have really bad handwriting, it may make sense to ask them if they could type up their work too .

Some teachers aren't that much better in that department though. I had to ask several teachers to decrypt their commentaries under my exams for me and my LK History teacher was so bad that saying "I couldn't read what you put down on the blackboard" worked as a valid excuse to not do one's homework. Also, lively discussions between students when we had to take notes from the blackboard during lessons.

Writing vertical lines with a goosefeather quill is a pain in the butt, so for words ending in an "n" plurals on "-en" were often abbreviated by placing a horizontal line above the last "n" to indicate a repetition. Other then that, I think most 13th century handwriting is pretty straightforward. The absence of a consistent orthography is a bigger problem.

I whole-heartedly enjoy your videos. My only critique is on this show's abrupt increase in volume when the gameshow segment began. My girl was awoken as well as Fat Farrah the lethargic cat. As someone with a horrific hand writing myself (sometimes I can't even read my own notes from yesterday's meeting) I think you're making writing in a nice way sound a bit too easy. While I am certainly able to produce hand writing that looks slightly less appalling this process really takes a lot of time. Time I haven't got in an exam where I have to produce a lot of text quite quickly with cramps in my hand and all.

This is why I made most of my essays on a computer. My handwriting is utterly illegible, and have always been, to the enormous frustration of most of my teachers... A little hint to people using computers about footnotes. USE LaTeX! It's a bit hard to learn to use it, however it handles typesetting beautifully, positions footnotes where they should be, and can be used to write even complicated mathematical equations, so your maths and science homework can be writing on computer in stead of hand!

Here in the US teachers have just given up teaching handwriting beyond second grade. They stopped teaching cursive years ago. Either they recognize that most people communicate today by typing and view hand writing as unnecessary, or more likely they just gave up. -- So, come here: All assignments are typed.

The handwriting part reminds me of my middle school science teacher. I admit I have horrible handwriting. He returned my marked homework. He told me in front of the whole class: "I do appreciate your desire of picking up parts of wildlife, but please don't have ants crawling all over your homework before the ink is dry." He handed me my homework: failed due to illegibility. After that I quit cursive and wrote only in printed letters. Still, I quite liked that teacher (humorous British guy).

I have terrible handwriting and find spelling very difficult so I type things because it fixes both! Yay spell check! Also with ADD it is nice to skip around when writing essays or realizing I'm missing like 5 middle words to make my sentences make sense and not have to do tiny carrots above or in the margins.

My handwriting looks pretty good. It's very regular, and I always use a fountain pen, so the line weight is good too. Doesn't mean it's easy to decypher. My "m", "n" and "u" all look the same, as do my "v" and "r", "z" and "2", "s" and "5", and sometimes "t" and "f". Most of the time it's clear enough from context, though.

Oh, god the handwriting one spoke to me on an emotional level, I have the WORST handwriting, but how the hell am I going to make a good legible handwriting if I have to write three pages in just an hour? And, besides, being a left-handed sucks, because of the ink meeting your hand and then the whole page is freaking blue and so is your hand. And I'm very, very sorry for my teachers.

I have bad handwriting I felt bad for teachers, it was not ledgible when on tests and exams because it took too long to make it ledgible. But it is what happens when you move many times and you never get taught how to because no school sticks to the same schedule. You have to kind of wing it. Sadly most people don't have that excuse. Now I just print.

Sometimes kids have horrible handwriting because their fingers actually lack the strength to push the pencil around accurately. I was like that in the second grade and spent a lot of time squeezing on a rubber ball: which fixed the problem. Other times it's just a lack of co-ordination which is much harder to work on. There are entire schools of exercise to work on your extra-pyramidal ganglia (large muscle co-ordination) but little for your pinkies (which is handled elsewhere in your brain).

It seems that the solution a lot of teachers have to the problem of illegible handwriting is to force students to type all their work. But then students never have to opportunity to improve their handwriting, because they're almost certainly not going to be doing it on their own time.

In my experience, illegibility in handwriting can work for you. I had a teacher at the end of the year tell me the reason I had made 90's and 100's all year was because she couldn't read my cursive. oh my gosh the ending of that illegible handwriting skit made me snort! I'm not a teacher, but I do tutor students who are learning English, and it can be difficult to decipher their writing, especially on top of grammar and spelling mistakes. I give them a break because they are learning the language still, but my high school teachers used to take 10% off the grade, and we would have to hand in another copy as well if it was completely illegible (I know this 'cause of my bad handwriting) :)
