I was staying with a friend where her dog (Belgian malinois) became pregnant and gave birth the week before covid lockdowns. Let me tell you, it was such a blessing that I was able to be home everyday all day because those puppies needed care ever hour or so, and it was about 20 mins of work. They’d wake up, pee and poop and you gotta clean it up before they get it everywhere. And then the mom got an infection in her nipple, poor thing. But they all came out big and healthy. The hardest part was getting them new homes, it’s so sad letting them go after you spend 2-3 months caring for them.

I like how you emphasize that if you are not doing this full time, the quality of your litter suffers and the life quality of the momma suffers drastically, which is less than ideal! This is super important for a any breeder to consider. Quality care produces quality dogs. ❤️ I also like that you prep the food by the dogs so they experience the home noise. I am glad you made this video to show how breeding is not just about creating cute puppies 🥰

Everybody does things differently. I saw a thumbs down, and I hate that when someone is trying to help others, and isn't bat face crazy. I wean my puppies with warm puppy can food and Tomlyn's high calorie puppy paste and move them to dry via soaked kibble - all based on what the individual puppy is ready for. I've added some esbilac in as well too, but the current litter didn't need it. I do I have to say the puppy paste is,,essential to have on hand, those puppies struggling with weight can use that extra boost and it's good from birth through their transition. Especially good for the transition, I've seen 'em drop weight switching, and the paste helps. I'll never have a litter without esbilac POWDER (not the canned, the calories in the premixed can suck), or puppy paste and a number of other goodies.

I have nine newborn German Shepherd puppies that are now four days old. Some gained a few ounces above the 15 ounce average birth weight and then rebounded back down to birth weight. Some stayed at the same weight as birth weight over those 4 days. They are eating about every 2 hours. They are strong and vigorous. They only cry when hungry and can easily crawl over to feed themselves. In between feeding if they don't cry, they sleep and don't act hungry. We have a light bulb that keeps a small area at 85 degrees thats available when they aren't next to mom. We've checked rectal temps on a couple and the were 97-99 degrees. We have started a small amount of formula, about a tablespoon at a time in between feedings. The small amount is to prevent aspiration. The vet recommended a tiny bit of Karo syrup rubbed onto the tongue occasionally to keep blood sugar ok. We didn't get much information from the vet so far to tell us when we should be worried. How many days can they remain near their birth weight and still be ok? We want them to gain an ounce or two a day but we aren't sure what we need to do differently? I know it's possible they could have worms or something? Mom seems to be making milk. The puppies seem satisfied. We give the mom canned puppy food mixed with a regular dry dog food, a hard-boiled egg every day and some peanut butter for fat. We aren't sure what would require taking them to the vet? We have good vets and they didn't ask to see them yet. I know it's possible that the first few days they might not gain much? But I want to stay on top of everything. Most information I read is that they should gain 1-2 ounces a day after the first 24 hours.

Unfortunately there are backyard breedere that are shitty and don't do any of the things that you or any other reputable breeder does, no vet checks, no health testing, no temp checks, no socialization/enrichment/desensitization activities, mamas getting infections/mastitis and passing, them not wanting to buy puppy food or proper food for the mom, barely feeding mama or the puppies, the puppies being sent to irresponsible homes thatll drop them at a shelter as soon as it starts getting harder than they thought it would be, breeding 2 different breeds on purpose, them breeding 2 same breed dogs but with no health testing/no ofa, no temperment testing, so these breeders arent even doing a fraction of the work or spending a fraction of half the money/time a reputable breeder will on their dogs/puppies, and just wanting to breed to make money, not even really caring how healthy or sound they are when they become adults & its sad.

Reality is that millions of people don't care about these things because all they think is: "I want a dog." And as soon as they see the cost for a good reputable breeder, they will rush to the next cheapest option. When it comes to getting a dog, the vast majority of people impulse buy puppies.

Sort of ironic, a video about breeding healthly dogs, yet this person is breeding a dog that sounds like its on the verge of experiencing a life thretening condition, so much so that its temperature needs to be taken twice a day., how absurb. You got to ask yourself, is this dog really fit to be bred given the precautions that need to be taken to prevent its demise? Like many things these days, the problems are being caused by those very people purporting to be all about health and safety, you can always spot them by their level of arrogance and pathological air of self righteousness. I have been breeding dogs for 20 years and never had to take mamas temp twice a day, but then again I only breed healthy animals so I dont need to, and all the fools writing comments about the great advice make me want to vomit.

Instead you criticise another breeder…Focus your negatively on irresponsible breeders instead. These videos are to help and educate, but you don’t have to follow each step exactly set out in these videos, it’s just a guide for new breeders.
