I got a shelter dog a few weeks ago (2 years old). He was returned twice by two previous adopters because of mouthing, nipping and not responding to training. The Humane society staff put in a lot of time training him. When I got him he would sit, shake, lie down and come most of the time on leash or in a controlled space. He still jumped on people a lot and mouthed/nipped a lot when excited. I now have him sitting, shaking, laying down very consistently in the house, on a leash or on a long lead. He stops mouthing on command and knows what "be gentle" means. He will switch to licking when I say, "kisses." He is very smart and alert. He is well behaved on both a long lead and leash with no pulling or barking. He comes when called most of the time in the house or on a lead, but if he is comfortably laying down, he may just look at me unless a treat or going outside is the reward. I live in a very remote part of north central WA on 40 acres. Think wilderness up in the mountains. the U.S./CA border is just up the road (1 mile). The closest neighbor is a mile away. If I let him off his leash/lead, or he slips out the door, he is gone, for hours. Right now with Covid, if he crosses the border, I will have a real problem on my hands, as the border is closed and repatriating the dog (I'm told) will be a small logistical nightmare (he does have a chip, tags, and I'm subscribed to 24PetWatch). I have a Dogtra ARC E-collar. So far the E-collar, treats, fresh meat, nothing works with recall off the leash. He bolts at full speed until out of sight, every time. I'm not sure what to do at this point because he is well trained in all aspects except recall. In training sessions, he comes on command every time. If he gets loose, nothing else exists except running away. Last evening I tracked him in the snow after he got away. Within a few minutes, he was more than a half mile away before I gave up and turned back. So far he has returned once he gets tired and hungry, but I need him to stay around me when off leash. I do not want a dog that has to always be tied up. In the valley below are cattle ranches. If he goes down there and chases cows, he will be shot. It's what they do here. All my previous dogs learned pretty quickly to stay around the house/shop near me. I would appreciate any tips!

My dog is the same way. Unfortunately what I've been told by many trainers is that some goals aren't realistic for some dogs. If it's a major dealbreaker, maybe he'd be better suited in a different home.
@galadhlinn
@galadhlinn 3 жыл бұрын
@@hunterurban5465 Thanks for the reply. Had I returned him, it would have been his third time and likely the end of his life. To update: I bought the Dogtra arc collar. It worked beyond my expectations, so well, that I would not be surprised if he had some training on an E-collar previously. When the collar is on, he is a different dog. Hangs with me and doesn't run. If he strays too far, he almost always comes on a call/and or whistle. When I do push a button, it is the vibrator. Now, he will still run off, if I'm working and distracted, but not bolt away. Last week I almost lost him, as he got away and calling and the collar didn't bring him back. We have deep snow here now, so I suspected he ran down the road which is where I found him a mile away. I discovered that the collar battery was dead. : P He's an awesome dog who just needed the right tool.

Just got a rescue dog 2 months ago and I’m struggling big time with him to listen to me: He gets overexcited to the point where he starts to jump and paw at me with his paws and ends up scratching me He also whines nonstop and won’t be quiet, there are times where he literally cried nonstop for an hours Doesn’t listen at walk, and pulls Sometimes gets mouthy Is very destructive And to top things up my family members like to let him get away with things and when I tell them they did wrong they get mad at me I have mix emotions about this dog bc my family not listening I don’t want to give up on him he’s a good dog just needs direction

I have bad experiences with using negative reinforcement while dogs are in social interaction, especially in this early stage. In my opinion: That tool is for dogs who already habe good understanding. In a bad scenario the dog is goung nuts with people (or any onther passive/active external stimulus involved). And this can be hard to work out with sensitive dogs. This can go really bad when you are not experienced AND dont have the theoretical basement. So for professionals only!

okay! update: i tried this method, we did about a 5 minute session in the house, and i had her on a long lead. it was working, she was coming to me, however she is still extremely scared. like won’t take food scared. after the 5 minute session (it’s been about 30 mins) and she is still acting scared. she’s hiding under my bed and everytime she were to come out (i pulled her out) her tail would stay down. this is pretty much how it was before i tried this method, only difference is she’s actually coming to me instead of avoiding. should i continue the training ? i don’t want to accidentally create a problem. and if i should… how frequently? everyday ? every other day? once a week? i live in the country with no fence and a busy road, i really need this recall (i have another dog who i fully e-collared trained so i’m not completely new to it)

I have an almost 5 month old lab- he does great with collar conditioning to vibrate and stim in a controlled environment environments with small distractions. But when he sees other people or dogs across the way he completely ignores the stim and will take off running away. We have to crank the stim up more than he has ever needed it in a controlled environment and then he yelps before he comes back. We are having trouble dealing with this as all the training we do when he isn’t distracted he does so well.

StandingStoneKennels is there any way to teach both without the ecollar? For the barking, any time he sees another animal he whines a lot and barks. Also if we are in bed at night and he hears a door shut, someone drive by, anything to alert him he will bark.

@juanibarra218 4 жыл бұрын
@@sierraschaffer499 I find that prolonged stay helps with building a tighter bond...for example making her wait at sit for a meal. For the barking thing it would help to practice on walks that you are not interested in acknowledging other dogs and redirecting them by making them sit and being calm in another dogs presence. The more focused they are on you the easier it will be to get them to ignore certain things.

Treats or a favorite toy that he only gets when you really need him to listen. High value treats only when you need him to seriously listen. People underestimate the value of a good treat. Throw it on the ground Infront of you and when he comes, reward and talk to him. Keep reenacting that over and over and use the same words each time. Whatever you choose. Eventually he will get it.

@mattervin6548
@mattervin6548 3 жыл бұрын
There are vibrate collars, and then shock collars. In almost all cases a "shock" collar also has a vibrate function. Vibrate causes an annoyance more so than a pain. A vibrate is definitely not the same thing as a low level shock.
