I started rotating daily this year. So far the results are impressive, especially on worn out, compacted pastures. Far fewer weeds, and the grass comes back stronger since it's not being clipped off every few days. I can't say exactly how much more forage is being produced, but there's a visible difference.

No way. I highly respect Salatin's farming philosophy and teachings, but want nothing to do with his Christofascist politics.

A big benefit of AMP grazing Joel doesnt mention is water retention. Years of constantly feeding soil organics has left the soil in his pastures porous AF, so he gets much more water infiltration than his neighbors who do static grazing.

Wonderfull Video, I've understood the importance of moving the cattle , have you considered planting some acorn trees ????? I know most animals really like to feed on them and enhance the flavour of the meat due to the rich omega fat on them. Just wonder. Thank You.

Do cattle eat acorns?
@andrewrivera4609
@andrewrivera4609 Ай бұрын
They certainly do, in Spain they raise the famous black pig, they have some very old 500 year trees that give acorns, and in the time they come out and fall to the floor is where the Pigs go crazy, after eating them they double their weight, because acorns are high in protein & Omega 3 fats.

Yes cattle do eat Acorns, look at the Moose and the Dears in the forest, they look for them in chestnut & other similar trees, this Great protein & fats are beneficial for the cattle.

I’m working on a system that should make it possible for smaller land owners to sustain cattle. How many unit of fodder does a milking cow need a day, if each unit was about the size of a piece of sod, but several inches tall.? Growing barely and wheatgrass with amaranth and sunflower sprouts in it.

The size of the paddock would vary based on a lot of factors. Such as quality of the pasture, time of year, annual rainfall, etc.

While that all sounds very nice, how is this replacing fertilizer or the need to kill weeds. You are still having a net export of minerals when you sell the cattle. Over time the soil will become deficient without fertilizer. And letting the pasture recover after a short but intense grazing doesn't do anything to keep weeds down. Fact of the matter is that there plants that cattle don't eat. And when you repeatedly graze an area those tend to take over as the cattle eat the stuff you want to grow and leave the stuff you don't want in peace to continue growing. Eventually the weeds take over. I can see how his methodology can increase pasture productivity, though I do wonder how much time and effort go into hauling water and resetting fences everyday.

leaves bring up minerals deeper in the soil. but also exporting cattle off you farm will take so much longer for nutrient deficiency compared to hay twice a year.

It sounds like you are at the beginning of learning about rotational grazing :) These problems solve themselves without our input as long as the animals are moved every day and they are not overstocked. Water is done with pipes (usually from a pond at high ground or municipal water) and tanks are plugged into the pipe. There is generally a high-tensile permanent electric fence around the farm (quite cheap compared to alternatives) and the paddock divisions are done with polywire. Greg Judy has tutorial videos on setting up an operation like this that would help with implementation details. As for weeds/soil deficiency, there is lots of content from many ranchers (including the universities now) that show that you don't need inputs to maintain these.

This doesn’t pass the sniff test, most ranchers don’t have enough land to move herds everyday. He is way too clean and soft to be a real rancher. He reeks of a DC Democrat who is leeching money off of the taxpayers

Why don't you come to NZ where this is pretty normal It's not so much having enough land, but enough fences. If you have enough land to raise the cows you have, you can fit more cows on if you have more fences and move them often. Every extra paddock you have increases the time you can rest the other paddocks, therefore you grow more grass and can run more cattle

He uses the same amount of land as any other rancher. In fact he is able to graze 4x the cattle on the same total land. The difference is he divides the land into appropriately sized paddocks for one day of grass, rather than a whole season like conventional ranches. That way the rest of the ranch is evenly fertilized, and grass has a chance to regrow to full size recover.
