Looking for the best things to do in Krakow? Not sure what to see in Poland? Escape the main attractions and visit these 3 must see...⬇ Click 'Show More' ⬇
There's lots of great things to do in Krakow and everyone has an opinion on what to do when you visit Poland. We've done a lot of the typical main attractions and worked through other lists of what to see in Krakow - but there's more beyond the main must see sights that you should add to your to do list.
In this vlog we recommend 3 different things to do in Krakow out of town, that may vary from other recommendations you've had on what to do. Our recommendation is get out of town, go for a walk away from the people and the city, see some new sights, explore deeper and see what Poland and Krakow really has to offer with some of these free things to do!

Check out Zakrzówek - it's a pretty cool lake, just 10 mins away from the city center! ;) You can get there by taking trams: 52, 18, 17 or 11 going to "Czerwone Maki"! And i advise you to get out on Kapelanka stop :) The lake is amazing, it really looks like a little bit of Croatia locked in the center of Krakow.

Super interesting vlog. I could feel the chill of the location coming across in spades! One of the things I really enjoyed was the way you captured the slightly random "let's go this way and hope it's right" nature of the day. This drew the viewer in to make them feel as if they were actually on the trip with you - like you were taking a bunch of mates to see the places - which in effect you were!

There is a lot of myths and stories about Cracow's mounds, and we still don't know much about them. My opinion is that it's because they tell our pre-christian history, and obviously many institutions(mainly catolic Church) are not interested in telling the Poles their true history.. We are taught that Poland was born in 966. However many places (also lilke this one) show us that there was a well developed civilisation here even like 1800 BC.

Stacey has fantastic tan :) Traditions of 'mounds' goes to the antic times, pre-Christian Slavs or even earlier to the Scythians who used to live here. Building mounds (known also as kurhans) was the way to pay the last respect to the great kings, warriors or heros. During the austrian occupation Cracow from 1795-1918 Poles could not honor their national heros by building the monuments, because the austrian occupier did not want any resurgence of polish pride or nationalism, so the way to do go around it was to build the mound and call it for example the 'Kosciuszko Mound'. This is how Poles were able to pay the respect to our heros during the dark times of the austrian occupation.

The actual concentration camp that was to represent the one in Schindler’s List is actually next door to the quarry you went to. Amon Göth’s house (the Kommandant of Kraków-Płazlów concentration camp) is still standing, the actual house that was used in the film is actually next door to Göth’s house. Please don’t find it inappropriate to film this kind of stuff. It needs to be told, considering that today in most schooling curriculum the Holocaust is not taught, and more than 60% of people aged from 18-35 in the western world outside of Europe have no idea that this actually happened less than 100 years ago - it’s dreadfully sad. I am about to graduate from a masters in modern history, and I want to use that to teach people that this actually happened and by learning we can try not to repeat the wrongs of the past. My sister in law who is in high school in NZ hasn’t even got this subject in her curriculum in her school work. So we are packing up and taking her to Germany and Poland, so she can understand better what happened to her family but to learn this as well.

Guys to be precise, the tombstones you walked on were actual remains of the Schindler's List set, however the quarry itself used to be a forced labour camp during WWII, operated by Germans. Thousands of people worked there throughout the war and unfortunately, many died. The whole area is next to an actual former German concentration camp KL Plaszow and a Jewish cemetery which now can't really be seen due to war damages and purposeful destruction from the occupation forces (and, simply, time). Some of the places in that general area are marked, some aren't, there is also a big monument on the hill that you might have seen that commemorates the victims. There were different ideas and projects over the last decade or so about how to handle this place which on one hand, is beautiful, but on the other, some of it should probably be restricted from being accessed by the general public for things like picnics and drinking, out of respect. By the way, you won't see much of that happening anyway (other than people just walking or hiking or visiting the monument) because, well, over here in this part of Europe some of that respect is naturally embedded in us and taught to us both at home and in schools. Having said all that - I do not think you've done anything wrong or inappropriate however seeing like you want to learn about places you're visiting, and also for others who might be watching your videos and come to Krakow (and you are very welcome to!), I thought this could be relevant. There is a decent article on English Wikipedia where you can read more facts if you're interested. Thanks for making the videos, glad you're enjoying your stay here, you're awesome! :)

Between 1795-1918 there was no country called Poland. In 1795 the country was partitioned between Prussia, Russia & the Hapsburg Empire (Austria/Hungary). Krakow was part of Austria for 123 years. It lay right on the border between the Hapsburg empire and Russia. The Austrians were expecting a war with Russia anytime so they built 3 rings of fortifications around the city and observation points. The “mounts” are observation points, the fort you went to is one of at least 50 forts built around the city by the Austrians . When WWI broke out in 1914 the Austrians has over 100 000 soldiers stationed in these forts and looked out for the Russian army from these “mounts”. What you are experiencing now is the Hapsburg/Russian war of 1914.

FYI - these towers in the quarry we`re not built for the film - these were industrial structures used to produce quicklime (resource needed for construction). Actual concentration camp "Płaszów" is situated just few hundred meters further east - you can still see some ruins there, and whole camp commander`s villa, there is also a monument commemorating the atrocities that happened there

its next to my apartment near the children's hospital. If you like the area and get stuck you can stay in my apt. Its vacant now till I get there for the independence march in Nov.

Come on Ausies you have to check out the Kosciuszko mound. The highest mountain in Australia is named Kosciuszko Mount, after the honor of Kosciuszko who fought for the US independence became a hero in the US, then fought for Polish independence and then for Australian. The guy toured killing enemies of freedom world wide. Hero on 3 continents.
