Can you please do a video? A short will even do. How to safely turn on wet roads when you have no option but to go across a thick white crosswalk that is two lines painted across the street you're turning onto. I just fractured the crap out of my foot from this and would love to know where I F*ed up by seeing the correct way. 🙏

I was wondering if you could please tell me the name brand of the flashing lights that you put on your motorcycle or if not, if you could tell me, which is the video you did that talks about it that you made? I think it’s a great idea for lane splitting.

Great instructions combined with actual demonstration! This isn't legal in Texas, although it should be. Lane "filtering" isn't legal either, but I do it anyway because I feel safer. Car drivers get upset sometimes, but I have never had a problem with law enforcement even when they could easily stop me.

@Paradox1A9B2w7 a few Years ago some of the North Cal motorcycle advocates pronounced themselves against doing that for that same reason. Plus they hould be used to annouce hazards for real and only when in trouble so others know. It is better to get those headbeams that flash. As those alert drivers more than loud pipes and hazard lights.

True riding a motorcycle on a public road requires significantly more cognitive capacity than driving a car.
@MyzoryMaiq
@MyzoryMaiq 2 ай бұрын
Yeah true, but you are putting all your trust in the same exact people who are on their phone. The comment about the likely hood of being rear-ended is a bit misleading because that is the most common car crash due to the amount of cars on the road. The idea that you lanesplit for "your safety" is beyond stupid. If your advice is to treat everyone like they are drunk and or want to hurt you (essentially being a defensive driver) then wouldn't the best thing be to simply not lane split? I'm just saying, this benefits no one but you and one can argue it is an unnecessary risk. You may know the dimensions of your bike but let's be real here normalizing this will only make the riders you wouldn't want to do this to do this.

So very true, I lane split on occasion and it's not legal here. Things to think about in general. 1. Ride like a ghost because you are a ghost to other drivers (assume they don't see you, EVER) 2. Size up the road and the lane divides as there may be raised markers on the road or noise umble strips. 3. When approaching slow or stopped traffic never assume that it's safe. Some people open doors to throw things out or just to be an a-hole. Where I live nobody can drive, and honestly I think DMV sends licenses out like they need to make a quota, I'm not kidding. it's literally like a video game here in norther Va. with the morons here. Speed cameras and nobody can get over 20mph so what's the point, haha.

I'd add, check your mirrors for other bikes coming up behind you when you're lane splitting. Just yesterday I was lane splitting and I could see another bike coming up fast behind me. What has kept me alive for 40+ years riding on the streets is just what you said. "predict that everybody is stupid and drunk and they are trying to hurt you," which will keep us safe on the motorcycle. I may add that when I'm riding, "it's 4 or more wheels versus my two". I always am riding defensively. I also have a pulsating headlight and wear a white helmet, so I know most drivers can see me. You have no idea how many riders I pick up on 911 MVAs as a medic here in the Houston area. All because of complacency! Thanks for sharing this good advice, Greg!

Did my MSF basic rider course, bought my bike, had it shipped from out of state. Picked up my bike from the shipper/ carrier on Monday, registered it on Tuesday, and on Friday I was lane splitting. I was sitting in traffic in the carpool lane and a guy rode by on a sports bike, slowed down near me and was looking at me in a "why aren't you lane splitting" kinda way. I ignored him. I'd just started riding a few days ago. Second guy comes along on a Harley Sportster (I think) then a guy on a Goldwing. That was the straw. I said to myself "if he can fit that barge between the cars then I can fit this thing in there too (Africa Twin.) Fortunately the 210 W in Pasadena has about a 2 foot buffer zone between the carpool and #1 lanes. And that's how I started lane splitting. Lane splitting is a cheat code for life. I became a ride every day (summer, autumn, winter, spring) rider because of lane splitting.

Love how the dude giving advice is literally breaking the law. lol 😂. So you are allowed to lane split of course in CA, but only in situations what you are doing is not a situation 5mph or not moving. Meaning if you cause a crash doing what you are doing in this vid it is on you. Cuz there is no reason to split. Traffic is steady plenty of time for drivers to react to you. You literally pointed it out by mentioning the gaps. A cop will have all the power to pull you over. Not saying it’ll happen I’m saying if you get pulled over doing this don’t pull the “it’s legal” cuz it’s not.

A bad thing I caught myself doing at stopped traffic is starting to look down at the cars about three or four car-lengths in front of me. At lights the cars are often staggered in their lane position and I was trying to make sure I would fit. This made me unstable, you need to keep your eyes forward and up (just like the cone-weave exercise) or you'll start wobbling. So, like you say, if you can't fit don't split or if you are new (like me), you really need to know your bike so you can focus your attention down the road.

Bi = 2, Tri = 3 don't be afraid to say you ride a trike. As for lane splitting a trike, a can-am spyder is just shy of 5 feet wide, it's as suitable for lane splitting as one of those tiny Smart cars that they no longer sell in the USA. A Harley or Goldwing trike may be better/slimmer but not significantly enough to make it that much better at lane splitting I would have to imagine.

Riding on the freeway maybe 20 MPH faster than already fast traffic (80 is the new 60) is attempting to fulfill a death wish for the sake of getting ahead of others. Me, I feel vulnerable and naked (even with gear on) while going that fast, weaving in and out of vehicles that could run me over and make hamburger meat out of me if I spilled out on the pavement. Oh yeah, it's just great if you light your bike up so that you look just like an emergency vehicle with bright colored flashing lights, but is that really fair or even wise to be fooling people like that? I think acting like that, looking like an emergency vehicle and weaving in and out like that, causes drivers "in cages" to really resent bikers as taking wrongful advantage of them and it's no wonder they will cut us off and do other dangerous things around motorcycles. I'll tell you, when I'm driving in my "cage" and I see a vehicle lit up like a phony cop or ambulance, I'm not going to do anything dangerous, but I'm NOT going to get out of the way. For myself, NO WAY am I going to do this sort of thing while riding, no matter how childishly impatient I am and no matter how much I think I just HAVE to get ahead of others. I guess one of the reasons I feel this way is because, many years ago, I watched as a bearded Harley rider cut around slowly moving vehicles on a freeway in LA. As he swerved around a pickup, the enraged driver then bumped him as he was going by. The traffic was then nearly stopped so that when I passed the rider, I saw that his beard was full of blood and it was pretty obvious he was dead. For what? So he could get to the bar and have a few more minutes to get shitfaced? After all these years, he still hasn't made it there.

I hope that PickUp Driver is rotting in Prison. Using a vehicle to assault someone is a serious crime, just like using a fire-arm would be.
@oldgeezerproductions
@oldgeezerproductions Жыл бұрын
@@erniel3034 True, the driver was "dead wrong" and the rider was "dead right," but the important word is 'dead.' As I remember, the truck was held up in traffic by other cars blocking his way as he tried to exit the freeway, so yes, I'm sure he was caught. Having said that, the crime was one of passion and not premeditated and probably only earned the driver manslaughter and not murder 1. That's the nature of anger, it has us do things while we are in an insane state of mind (that's why it's called "being mad") and so I think it is wise to NOT trigger mad behavior in others. Don't know about you, but I've done things in anger that I sincerely regret (but never actually harming anyone) and so I feel really stupid when I provoke someone while out riding. but it happens, it happens.

My mirrors are the widest part of my bike, so it allows me to easily judge if I can fit. BTW, I don't get people who install tiny mirrors at the ends of their handle bars. I'm not sure how it affects vision but for sure it makes the bike wider than it's necessary. Are the mirrors for the looks or functionality? Lane splitting is illegal in Australia. We have what we call filtering which is low speed lane splitting which is legal. Lane filtering is when you ride your motorcycle at low speed between stationary or slow moving vehicles travelling in the same direction you are. The 2 lines or lanes of traffic must both be travelling in the same direction. If one of the lines or lanes is a dedicated turning lane (left or right) you must not lane filter using this lane. You're only allowed to lane filter in Queensland if you hold an open licence for the motorcycle you are riding an your speed when filtering is 30km/h or less and it's safe to do so. You can ride on road shoulders and in emergency stopping lanes on major roads-such as highways, freeways and motorways past stationary or slow-moving traffic if: the speed limit is 90km/h or more your speed is 30km/h or less

I have a question. A Total Control instructor said once that lane splitting is only allowed if there is a broken line in-between lanes. A solid line or a double solid line between lanes means that you can't lane split. And that's what you'll find between the carpool lanes and the rest. But that's where everyone is riding. Even cops. I'm a bit confused. Besides, a lot of times carpool moves faster than the rest of the traffic, and I think lane splitting in such situations is dangerous. Even though the space between the carpool lanes and the rest is the widest, riding on painted surfaces, especially in rain, is tricky and makes me feel uncomfortable. I hope I'm making sense.

15mph faster than the traffic? I would say 5 is better. Plus most inexperienced riders don't know how to lane split. This only comes with experience. Which is I think why it is illegal in most of the world. Inexperienced riders who don't know what they are doing getting into trouble. On the subject of drivers blocking riders trying to lane split, here in the UK (where it is known as filtering) some drivers think it is illegal (which it is not) and deliberately block a bike because they are 'doing their bit.' Something else to look out for.

Absolutely lane splitting is safer for the rider.....i never understood til i started riding on the street..... Even some friends and family members that dont ride, once i explained why we do it, made perfect sense to them, .......they never even thought it was fir rider safety...... If you can take the rear out if play its one less thing to worry about I ride like everyone is out to kill me, pretty simple...also bright colors.....well aware of hospitals, injuries and how friggen hard the ground is, 😂..... I started lane splitting on day 2 but had previous experience on bikes, just not street

In Belgium motorcycles are allowed to use the obligatory gap between cars in the two most left lanes, meant for emergency vehicles, but not faster than 40km/h or 20km:h (12 mph) faster than the wider vehicles. In the Netherlands one is not allowed to go more than 6 mph faster.. Cars have to create an emergency lane there as well

@dannysmits9706 Жыл бұрын
@@vrugtmanable I recommend following the rules that lane splitting in traffic going faster than 40km/h is forbidden. This means you will do max 50. But be aware that the Dutch learn to ride a bike before they can walk, and are not as law-abiding as yankee beginners ... so, in some areas it might not be a big deal... and I might still sell my virago, which has no speedometer in that country. In Belgium I can not. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane_splitting The Dutch are armerican minded, but in Belgium, better run Belgian plates when atempting to ride like an ex marine.

Further more, allow me to add that Belgian emergency vehicles, which have a bad reputation in the Netherlands, do not use the hard shoulder, because that is where Romanian truck drivers dump their exploded Djaaina tires, which should be exported to India via England. We stuff old buses, which do not meet emission criteria, with those tires.... and use Michelin on cruisers who avoid highways because they are not as scenic as in Aachen (Germany).

Did you see me pulling up, about to lane split between you and a car, while you were lane splitting. Lane splitting a lane splitter? I bet the whole time everyone behind you and what they were doing was completely invisible to you... and if they were a motorbike, they were just a fast approaching spec in the mirror... @@MotoJitsuWell, I'm an anarchist, I do whatever I want, so it's irrelevant where I live. I mean, you're totally free to do whatever you want and if nobody is hurt, no foul, and in that sense, I support you all the way. On the other hand, the math and probability is not on your side. The problem when you're an expert motorcyclist is you assume... everyone else is an expert driver as well, and you'll hold them to that in your head... everyone is like you on your level. The reality is, most people may not be anywhere near your level. There maybe kids that just learned to drive, old people, people getting off work tired, distracted people, people who just want to get home, people holding a Double Whopper in one hand and driving with the other, people who just spilled a drink, people fiddling with the radio, people on their cellphone people who are partially blind (yeah, I drove a motorcycle while blind (bad idea, I quickly shelved that until I got surgery 3 years later)), etc... After almost becoming bug splat 3 different times while driving blind for 3 peope simple..."parked in the road"... (I swerved around them each time at the last second when I finally did see them)... I adopted a new strategy... you want all moving and static objects as far away from you as possible while you are driving on a bike. Make that distance between you and everyone else as much as possible. If there's nothing there for you to hit, you can't hit anything. Lane splitting... you're enganging in a proximity dance with death of a tonne or two of moving unpredictable moving vehicles. Now, I'm the world's best proximity aerobatic dance pilot... but I also do it with both feet on the ground using an FPV quadcopter. I'm not about to do that sh1t with my body sandwiched between to semi truck drivers, one on meth, the other breaking the rules on time in the seat and experiencing micosleeps. The only time I give lane splitting a pass is if you're running from the cops. If you're doing that okay, hail to the chief baby! If however you're just doing it to get home faster, then yeah, you're just a line cutter then, and nobody likes people who cut in line. I'll stop that horn when you pass me lane splitting and scare the bejezus out of you, because you just scared the bejezus out of me...

This is what i mean. This is the pace of how i normally lane split and how i treat traffic and look out for patterns that can provoke someone to merge. But no matter what speed you lane split even like that of the pace of this video which is a great representation of how the majority of us lane split in CA, people will always say “splitting too fast” even though speed differential was always keep 10-15mph from surrounding traffic or they claim its the most dangerous this you could ever do on a motorcycle when that is far from the truth and all data around motorcycles splitting vs non-splitting overwhelmingly suggests otherwise. Anyhow keep riding, will always love california for lane splitting, even if i lived in another state i would still do it even though its “illegal”, i would just have to be more cautious of drivers trying to enforce law themselves. Anyhow california drivers as a whole do a damn good job of being aware of the act of lane splitting and providing extra room when most of the time its not needed but every-time they get the wave of appreciation ✌️. Anyhow its your responsibility as a rider to react in those situations where maybe they did not see you, no reason to throw a fit. React, avoid and move on.

Gee, where do I begin regarding this video?? As a 45+ yr. street rider and 30 yr. lane splitting expert I'll give you my take on this. You are giving instructions with only one hand which is on the throttle while gesturing with your left hand like so many POV youtubers. I know it's more interesting to viewers but in this instance I'd say keep BOTH hands on the bars. You may feel confident and some of your newer riders will think this is cool but you're a nanosecond away from being hamburger helper PARTICULARLY in that you don't use the open lane to gently move into while passing even when there's the opportunity. You're staying in the passing lane relying on traffic to just part for you like Moses on the Red Sea. Most of those drivers might see you but you don't leave yourself any room for error. I assume that every driver on road doesn't see me and I give them room. I can't believe this passes for "safe" lane splitting. I can guarantee that I move through traffic every bit as fast as you but the difference is giving room rather than forcing everyone to move for you. Remember they're a lot bigger and heavier. Sorry but I've got to be honest about this. Keep both of those hands on the bars. Remember, you can't even flash your high beams when you're "gesturing" for your viewers. We want you to stay safe Bro!

Bro, I never thought of using the hazards, but I do normally ride with my fog lights on (HD Heritage). I'm trying to learn to lane split, but I'm not getting the "people get out of the way" thing. Driving down the silver strand into IB this week after work, I got stuck in the line about 500 feet from the light. Cars heard and saw me coming THREE TIMES and moved left to put their tires on the white line and block me out. After 15 minutes, I never even made it to the light. Then on the entry ramp to North 5 one of those same guys crowded me in my (left) lane (even though there are two lanes) to get in front of me instead of behind, then brake checked me going into traffic. I think I have a "kill me" sticker on the back of my jacket or something.....
