@Paradox1A9B2w7 a few Years ago some of the North Cal motorcycle advocates pronounced themselves against doing that for that same reason. Plus they hould be used to annouce hazards for real and only when in trouble so others know. It is better to get those headbeams that flash. As those alert drivers more than loud pipes and hazard lights.

What has kept me alive for 40+ years riding on the streets is just what you said. "predict that everybody is stupid and drunk and they are trying to hurt you," which will keep us safe on the motorcycle. I may add that when I'm riding, "it's 4 or more wheels versus my two". I always am riding defensively. I also have a pulsating headlight and wear a white helmet, so I know most drivers can see me. @MyzoryMaiq4 ай бұрын
Yeah true, but you are putting all your trust in the same exact people who are on their phone. The comment about the likely hood of being rear-ended is a bit misleading because that is the most common car crash due to the amount of cars on the road. The idea that you lanesplit for "your safety" is beyond stupid. If your advice is to treat everyone like they are drunk and or want to hurt you (essentially being a defensive driver) then wouldn't the best thing be to simply not lane split? I'm just saying, this benefits no one but you and one can argue it is an unnecessary risk. You may know the dimensions of your bike but let's be real here normalizing this will only make the riders you wouldn't want to do this to do this.

So very true, I lane split on occasion and it's not legal here. Things to think about in general. 1. Ride like a ghost because you are a ghost to other drivers (assume they don't see you, EVER) 2. Size up the road and the lane divides as there may be raised markers on the road or noise umble strips. 3. When approaching slow or stopped traffic never assume that it's safe. Some people open doors to throw things out or just to be an a-hole. Where I live nobody can drive, and honestly I think DMV sends licenses out like they need to make a quota, I'm not kidding. it's literally like a video game here in norther Va. with the morons here. Speed cameras and nobody can get over 20mph so what's the point, haha.

Did my MSF basic rider course, bought my bike, had it shipped from out of state. Picked up my bike from the shipper/ carrier on Monday, registered it on Tuesday, and on Friday I was lane splitting. I was sitting in traffic in the carpool lane and a guy rode by on a sports bike, slowed down near me and was looking at me in a "why aren't you lane splitting" kinda way. I ignored him. I'd just started riding a few days ago. Second guy comes along on a Harley Sportster (I think) then a guy on a Goldwing. That was the straw. I said to myself "if he can fit that barge between the cars then I can fit this thing in there too (Africa Twin.) Fortunately the 210 W in Pasadena has about a 2 foot buffer zone between the carpool and #1 lanes. And that's how I started lane splitting. Lane splitting is a cheat code for life. Lane splitting is illegal in Australia. We have what we call filtering which is low speed lane splitting which is legal. Lane filtering is when you ride your motorcycle at low speed between stationary or slow moving vehicles travelling in the same direction you are. The 2 lines or lanes of traffic must both be travelling in the same direction. If one of the lines or lanes is a dedicated turning lane (left or right) you must not lane filter using this lane. You're only allowed to lane filter in Queensland if you hold an open licence for the motorcycle you are riding an your speed when filtering is 30km/h or less and it's safe to do so. You can ride on road shoulders and in emergency stopping lanes on major roads-such as highways, freeways and motorways past stationary or slow-moving traffic if: the speed limit is 90km/h or more your speed is 30km/h or less

A bad thing I caught myself doing at stopped traffic is starting to look down at the cars about three or four car-lengths in front of me. At lights the cars are often staggered in their lane position and I was trying to make sure I would fit. This made me unstable, you need to keep your eyes forward and up (just like the cone-weave exercise) or you'll start wobbling. So, like you say, if you can't fit don't split or if you are new (like me), you really need to know your bike so you can focus your attention down the road.

In Belgium motorcycles are allowed to use the obligatory gap between cars in the two most left lanes, meant for emergency vehicles, but not faster than 40km/h or 20km:h (12 mph) faster than the wider vehicles. In the Netherlands one is not allowed to go more than 6 mph faster.. Cars have to create an emergency lane there as well

@dannysmits9706 Жыл бұрын
@@vrugtmanable I recommend following the rules that lane splitting in traffic going faster than 40km/h is forbidden. This means you will do max 50. But be aware that the Dutch learn to ride a bike before they can walk, and are not as law-abiding as yankee beginners ... so, in some areas it might not be a big deal... and I might still sell my virago, which has no speedometer in that country. In Belgium I can not. nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lane_splitting The Dutch are armerican minded, but in Belgium, better run Belgian plates when atempting to ride like an ex marine.
@dannysmits9706 Жыл бұрын
Further more, allow me to add that Belgian emergency vehicles, which have a bad reputation in the Netherlands, do not use the hard shoulder, because that is where Romanian truck drivers dump their exploded Djaaina tires, which should be exported to India via England. We stuff old buses, which do not meet emission criteria, with those tires.... and use Michelin on cruisers who avoid highways because they are not as scenic as in Aachen (Germany).

This is what i mean. This is the pace of how i normally lane split and how i treat traffic and look out for patterns that can provoke someone to merge. But no matter what speed you lane split even like that of the pace of this video which is a great representation of how the majority of us lane split in CA, people will always say “splitting too fast” even though speed differential was always keep 10-15mph from surrounding traffic or they claim its the most dangerous this you could ever do on a motorcycle when that is far from the truth and all data around motorcycles splitting vs non-splitting overwhelmingly suggests otherwise. Anyhow keep riding, will always love california for lane splitting, even if i lived in another state i would still do it even though its “illegal”, i would just have to be more cautious of drivers trying to enforce law themselves. Anyhow california drivers as a whole do a damn good job of being aware of the act of lane splitting and providing extra room when most of the time its not needed but every-time they get the wave of appreciation ✌️. Anyhow its your responsibility as a rider to react in those situations where maybe they did not see you, no reason to throw a fit. React, avoid and move on.

I have a question. A Total Control instructor said once that lane splitting is only allowed if there is a broken line in-between lanes. A solid line or a double solid line between lanes means that you can't lane split. And that's what you'll find between the carpool lanes and the rest. But that's where everyone is riding. Even cops. I'm a bit confused. Besides, a lot of times carpool moves faster than the rest of the traffic, and I think lane splitting in such situations is dangerous. Even though the space between the carpool lanes and the rest is the widest, riding on painted surfaces, especially in rain, is tricky and makes me feel uncomfortable. I hope I'm making sense.

Often times a driver will see a rider coming up and move over without looking and can easily take out the rider on the other side. If I'm riding in a group I split single file only.

Keep your hands on the controls, people get complacent and relax something hsppens and time wasted getting back to the controls. Also where I am there is an almost official lane splitting lane, if you dont split in that lane you increase risk a fair bit.

Bro, I never thought of using the hazards, but I do normally ride with my fog lights on (HD Heritage). I'm trying to learn to lane split, but I'm not getting the "people get out of the way" thing. Driving down the silver strand into IB this week after work, I got stuck in the line about 500 feet from the light. Cars heard and saw me coming THREE TIMES and moved left to put their tires on the white line and block me out. After 15 minutes, I never even made it to the light. Then on the entry ramp to North 5 one of those same guys crowded me in my (left) lane (even though there are two lanes) to get in front of me instead of behind, then brake checked me going into traffic. I think I have a "kill me" sticker on the back of my jacket or something.....

Wish splitting and filtering were legal here. Just filtering at stop lights would be helpful. We have lights every 1/4 mile aound here. The south east.

I won't be lane splitting due to the fact that I live in a state that doesn't allow it. But I sure want front lights like you have on your motorcycle.

Living in PA, I would love for it to be legal here. But it would take a long time for cars to lose the attitude they have against cycles. Drivers are very territorial, they will swerve over at you for no reason at all. a person I know, who is MSF instructor was hit from behind a traffic light. Driver was high as a kite.

I miss riding in CA. In Texas there’s zero helmet law but lane splitting is illegal. You’re forbidden from doing the safer thing but no one cares if you’re helmetless and way more dangerous

Absolutely lane splitting is safer for the rider.....i never understood til i started riding on the street..... Even some friends and family members that dont ride, once i explained why we do it, made perfect sense to them, .......they never even thought it was fir rider safety...... If you can take the rear out if play its one less thing to worry about I ride like everyone is out to kill me, pretty simple...also bright colors.....well aware of hospitals, injuries and how friggen hard the ground is, 😂..... I started lane splitting on day 2 but had previous experience on bikes, just not street

I typically don't lane split at speed, I lane split at lights and in slow moving congestion.

Even outside of California. People will move out of your way in start and stop traffic. Most people do the right thing. Traffic acts differently when a motorcycle is around or a bicycle is around.

You mention not going more than about 15mph faster than the traffic. What would you say as a guideline for max speed when lane splitting and why?
@MotoJitsu Жыл бұрын
I think it's recommended 50 is max so 10-15 over...60, 65, all depends.

Rule #1, don't lane splitting. What does it save you just a few seconds. What can it cost you?
@MotoJitsu Жыл бұрын
you're at a high risk of getting rear ended by people distracted..not about saving time.
@stanclapper7179 Жыл бұрын
@MotoJitsu if you lane split to avoid an accident that's acceptable. But most of the time and videos indicate the rider is in a hurry/saving time. Not worth the potential for catastrophe. IMHO.
@MotoJitsu Жыл бұрын
How could you possibly know that? You go and stop all the riders who lane split and ask? If you think it's too risky, then don't do it. I say that in the video.
@stanclapper7179 Жыл бұрын
Moto all I'm getting at IMHO, is that in general I think lane splitting is a risky operation for us to undertake. And should be used as a defensive move.

As a 50+ year rider that has logged over a half million miles. I've seen way too much stupidity for me to ever consider lane splitting. In 90 percent of the US. It will get you killed.
@Nooziterp1 Жыл бұрын
15mph faster than the traffic? I would say 5 is better. Plus most inexperienced riders don't know how to lane split. This only comes with experience. Which is I think why it is illegal in most of the world. Inexperienced riders who don't know what they are doing getting into trouble. On the subject of drivers blocking riders trying to lane split, here in the UK (where it is known as filtering) some drivers think it is illegal (which it is not) and deliberately block a bike because they are 'doing their bit.' Something else to look out for.

You should only be between lanes when you're actively passing between two cars. You can't occupy two lanes simultaneously when you're not splitting. Finish your pass and merge to one lane or the other.

I'd be happy if Lane Filtering was legal here. Splitting wouldn't work well here, even before you factor in the drivers (older city, narrower lanes), but I've long supported making filtering legal here.
