Today's video is about one of my all time favourite players! So many subtleties to his playing that really give his lines such impact.

George's rendition of "When Sunny Gets Blue" was the first one I heard of his and it just blew me away. It was on the Time Life LP series "The Guitarists". Fine example of his sliding technique and melodic focus.

I think I first heard of George Barnes about 50 some odd years ago while reading an interview with hero #1 Chet Atkins. When I started buying his records I became a fan. I don't think he ever played much chord melody like Johnny Smith but I always thought his clarinet like soloing always set him apart from other jazz guitarists.....always so melodic and precise.
@jazzguitarwithandy Жыл бұрын
Precise is a great word to describe his playing. I just never tire of listening to him.

Barnes always sounds happy, unabashedly so. Plus he doesn't have that blanket covering speaker tone. Great player.

I did not read the title well enough. I thought that you did the video about George Benson. Till the moment that you said that he died in 1977. Than I realized that there was something wrong. But your video is still very useful because he i did not know George Barnes at all. I'm gonna check out this jazz guitar master. Thank you for your nice video!

Great information! I knew a little about G. Barnes, but not too much- I'm a lover of jazz guitar/guitarists, but I knew him more as a session/studio guitarist. I now acknowledge more about him, and definitely appreciate him more- Thank you!

After the Intro section of "I cant give you anything but love" he comes in with a solo that for me defines Jazz Guitar - all of those nuances that you describe are there in this number - A fabulous player.

Thank You for this as I feel George has been overlooked and no one swung like George!
@jazzguitarwithandy2 жыл бұрын
I know what you mean. I think it's because he kept with the swing style as others adopted the modal approach. Can imagine playing swing wasn't so trendy in the 60s and 70s.
@silkee592 жыл бұрын
You are correct swing was not popular at that time it was all modal. Check out George’s solo on Connie Francis Lipstick on your collar perfect phrasing, and you are a wonderful gifted player and very generous with your time!

So nice to hear George being discussed. I’ve always loved his style. Would absolutely love to learn his version of I can’t give you anything but love but there doesn’t seem to be a tab anywhere. You are bang on with the singability of his solos

Fantastic video! I love George Barnes. Very cool recording of his all-guitar band in some youtube videos. Singin' in the Rain and Have You Met Mrs. Jones etc - I love it. My favorite player(and other favorites) was on those sessions, Barry Galbraith. Not enough people do stuff on George Barnes! So interesting.

Mr. A - Could we/you add GB's sense of HOT Swing in a lead and then perfect laid back rhythm for swing in the groove as work with others...my favorites were his performances with Ruby Braff - both instrumentalists with all the chops and the ability to have a chance to continue to entertain and main reason for choosing music as a livelihood! Thanks for the the larger list of Barnes work! Best regards.

Kenneth "Jethro" Burns worked some sessions led by George Barnes who flat out did not tolerate mistakes. He said of GB :"He was the only guy I had ever seen that could do anything he wanted to- and do it right first time. He was tough." George Barnes did provide the swinging guitar solo on Homer & Jethro's parody of Elvis- "Hart Broke Motel."

Did anyone ever make a youtube playlist version of his George Barnes spotify playlist ? I love the fact George Barnes bends notes similar to Django Reinhardt. It's a shame bending is frowned upon by many Jazz Guitarists

I come more from rock and roll/rockabilly than jazz and knew Barnes from those records intially, always exceptional and distinctive. Spooky is great, sort of Les Paul meets the surf sound.
