I'm having good success with the Texas 1015Y Short Day onions this year, getting pretty big for only growing them in the holes of concrete cinder blocks, they're almost filling in the entire hole.

I grew those for a few years before Candy. I'm on the upper end of the short-day latitude, so I think that's why intermediate day onions work better for me. But 1015Y are very good for short-day areas!

I’ve had several of mine to bolt this year and our temps have been up and down this spring.

Great video Jill! I have a question about your chicken tunnel. Have you done a video on your chicken tunnel? It looks so interesting.

Yes but they are generally large and tough.

Do you have any tips for pepper plants that are slow growing?

They usually don't take off until it gets hotter. But if the temps are good, they respond well to fish emulsion.

If you see a flower stem barely showing, can you cut it off like garlic scapes & will the onion bulbs continue to grow like garlic bulbs will continue to grow when the scapes (blossom shoots) are removed?
@thebeginnersgarden
@thebeginnersgarden Жыл бұрын
No, from what I understand, they aren't like garlic in that way, sadly. Once it starts sending up that flower stem, the bulb won't continue to grow.

Do you ever trim the onions down to around 6",7" I keep mine trimmed down.
@thebeginnersgarden
@thebeginnersgarden Жыл бұрын
I tried that last year on some of mine, and I didn't feel like it helped. I almost felt like it hurt them because it gave them less foliage to photosynthesize and grow bigger bulbs. But I know others do it and have more experience than my small test.

I'm not an expert by any means. It's something I'm trying this year. I haven't had much luck with onions. I just found out this year I should use starts instead of bulbs that can be bought at the big box stores.
