@@mindwis3 Maybe ?, people i speak to have ended up with bad product, have no idea what they used, maybe you can help.... i use a 400 W MH and 400 W HPS, im looking for LED equivelent with the purpose of lowering bills, i dont want to compromise on final quality or even quantity of what i currently use, im assuming LED VS HPS doesnt do this ? and can i find an LED that will pull less than 400 W from the wall but still give me 400 w equivelant or better while not compromising on quality ? this stuff head Fu%$s me lol and id imagine given the targeted market for such products i wouldnt be alone

Hi @@johnmcafee9663, finding a 300 watt LED that beats 400 watt HPS/MH shouldn't be too hard. Perhaps rather than directly compare, you can detail the size you want to cover and how intense you'd like the light to be. i would consider going for around 400 watt led with a dial to set the power, that way you can get the same intensity you have now, but you have some headspace too if you turn up the power. @@blackbird69xxx That depends on several things... What is your budget, what do you want to grow, how big of an area, etc... Spectrum King has several decent options to choose from, Spyder Fluence lights are pretty much top of the line but they are pretty expensive. RapidLED.com has a lot of good options for DIY builds for reasonable prices. The most important thing to look for is a light that has a lot of white diodes that is supplemented with red (620 & 660 nm) diodes, this will give you a complete spectrum. Fruiting and flowering plants will benefit greatly from increased levels of red light. Things like lettuce, herbs, microgreens don't require boosted levels of red light. Familiarize yourself with spectral charts. I would disregard most of what Epic Gardening is telling you, he has a very limited understanding of horticulture LED lighting. chilledgrowlights.com/ - This site is a great resource to better understand the nuances of growing plants with LEDs. Check out their "Learn the basics" links at the bottom of their website. They also sell good horticulture lights as well as components for DIY builds. I hope this helps point you in a better direction. Epic Gardening is basically a glorified commercial showing people the most expensive and wasteful methods for cultivating plants. The light featured here is about 10 years behind the curve in LED horticulture technology/understanding. Good luck to you!

@@potatopotatoeOG Well, I changed the soil to a cactus mix, I definitely overeaters however and I am currently trying to dry it out with a heat pad wrapped around the pot. I have also added a couple grow light, one led, one incandescent in the hopes of giving it a fighting chance. Some of the leaves are showing the saturation, but I have spotted a few new shoots, so hopefully I can get it dried out enough that those don't saturate. It's been nice to try and actively help it. I just have to let it do it's thing now. Thanks for the encouragement. I won't be watering it for a while now.

Thanks for the illuminating video (had to). It explained a lot. Appreciated. My only suggestion is when discussing division, as said, "When you divide 112 into 192, you get 58%..." It sounds as if 112 is getting divided when it's not--it's doing the divide-ing. Like, "Divide 2 into 6." Most will knee-jerk a "3." But it's .66 repeating. It's just much clearer to say, "112 divided by 192." Phrased that way, all fractions can be read from the top, down, with no ambiguity about who's dividing who, which is also the same order you'd enter them on a calculator which is a great tip for folks who run one point short of a decimal. @Dave David Understood... my mistake on the .66666!! Yes, it's .33333.... So this is the confusion: It's ambiguous to say "6 goes into two"( parts?) equalling 3, or whether "how much of 6" goes into 2, being .3333333. Yet, both state, "6 goes into 2." Which interpretation to pick? All depends on who's the denominator. Many pick the wrong one. Thanks.

Most manufacturers don't have charts for PPFD, the best option is to contact them directly and ask about it. Still even after they show you the charts, would be a good idea to get a PAR meter which is expensive at, or get a lux meter and do the calculation to get approximate PAR from it, so whatever you get on Lux meter x 100 that and x 0,15 whatever you got, and that's as close as you can get to PAR, keep in mind that this can be a bit off on LED light and is better used on incandescents, fluorescent lights, high-intensity discharge lamps (HID) lights. KZbin is amazing.

Great video! Except one clarification. About 11:30 you're explaining how the manufacturers rate their lights by multiplying 10W diodes * 100 pieces = 1000W but actual draw is 1.8W per diode. My 2cents: Mfgs are using this 'fake' wattage as a way to compare to the industry standard HPS lights. Don't know how accurate that is but they compare HPS 1000W to their 1000W which actually shows the high efficiency of the LEDs. ('same'(ish) HPS light intensity but with much less power ex. 180W. Yup, it's very unfortunate to use the W(att) terms for comparing light strength. Obviously as you explain there are much more variables with the light spectrum and plant usable light etc. Cheers!

​@@epicgardeningWhat I got from your message is that the LEDs are LESS EFFICIENT. In reality HPS actually drawing 1000W has similar output to leds drawing 180W ACTUAL watts. So obviously same light output with 180Watts is more efficient. (Confusion is that they label these LEDs as 1000W - that 1000W is not the power draw - it is the equivalency of light output of similar HPS light. Those LEDs actually draw just 180W)

From what I have seen, the 1000w rating is usually saying that the LED light can replace a 1000w HPS or MH. For instance I just got one with 96 15watt LED, and uses about 170 watts. They claim it can replace a 1000w MH/HPS. If they went by the watt rating of the LED they could call it a 1440w LED. Under driving the LEDs is a good thing, they will last much longer. I went to school for EET and a good rule of thumb for picking components is to have them rated at least 2x what they would be expected to dissipate. like if you have a resistor that is going to have to dissipate 1 watt of power, you would want to use a 2 watt resistor. So using an LED at 18% of its full rating isn't a bad idea, it will last longer than trying to run it at 56% of its rating. Of course how well its cooling system is designed also has to be factored in. I would go by how much the fixture weighs. Say both of your lights weigh the same, so then they would most likely be able to dissipate the same amount of heat(unless they really messed up the design) I would expect the 18% one would last longer. Now if the one running them at 18% is like 1/4 the weight of the one running at 56% then I would probably go with the heavier one since the LEDs are being most likely being cooled better. As for LED efficiency for power to light conversion, I'd have to see a data sheet for the LED being used. like if you put 1.8 watts of power to a 10 watt led and your getting 70% of the max light output(compared at 100% rated power), you'd be using 5x the power to only get an additional 30% light(at 10 watts), so efficiency would go down. If your familiar with overclocking a CPU this will make sense, you can overclock a CPU and say get 5% more performance, but you might increase your power draw by 30%. Its up to you if the added power draw is worth the performance boost, same can be said for LED's. What I would really like to see is a comparison of a 1000w HPS to a LED that claims it can replace that 1000W HPS. Heck if it could even just outperform a 400 HPS/MH that would be great, since you would be using over 50% less power to get the same effect.

If we're using purely grow lights for growing (i don't have a sunny window or a backyard to place them outside) do you have to be on the look out for a certain stage of growth? Do you need to synthesis an experience for the plant? (I once saw a video of a woman slowly pushing her plant around to mimick a storm for the plant) Right now i have a batch of seedlings (4 of each, parsley, lavender, jalapeño, sage, chives, pumpkins) they're growing well and i've spaced them out for their necessary light requirememts and have a medium sized fan blowing on the lowest setting to give the effect of natural wind. Do i need to do anything else? I know with poinsettas you have to plan the dark-light settings in order for them to bloom. Anything like that i should anticipate?

Made mine from pallet wood, a tower shelf. Top for starting seedlings, bottom for main growth. Can make from PVC tubing and joints. Use radiator reflector or other reflective sheets. Kitchen foil is delicate but can mount on cardboard. Grow tents are cheap. But all depends on circumstances like space in a room. Personally I do it cheap as possible sacrificing my energy. Fifty bucks for a grow tent I think I have seen a few years ago... can't remember for sure.

Maybe you could do another regarding supplementing light for indoor houseplants. As well as, what all these plant growers mean by “indirect, bright light.” Most of my plants require this. I suppose you’d do the math re: your bulb and then gauge it by distance for strength?? Maybe a video for different plant types and their requirements? There's something you seem to have missed. A lot of bulb manufacturers specify "equivalent" or "replacement" wattage to express the relative light output in terms that the average Joe can relate to (because Joe is used to incandescent bulbs and has no idea what a lumen is). People still ask for 100W bulbs for their kitchen and 40W bulbs for their porch. It's all they know. And this makes it hard to sell them a 15 watt bulb because in their mind that is extremely dim. Perhaps this also applies to grow lights (where even lumens make no sense). Some manufacturers may be exploiting the misunderstanding but it all starts with Joe Public "misleading" himself by thinking in terms of wattage rather than luminosity or PPF. I have a pack of bulbs for my bedside lamp that specifies the actual power consumption, the equivalent power consumption (of a typical incandescent) and the luminosity (which is what really matters). This is the way forward. At least until people stop thinking in terms of old school tech and their power consumption. Now does anyone want to buy some 20W speakers? They are really loud. Trust me.

Thank you for this video! It is the most concise and detailed explanation on the specs of grow lights. Due to physical limitations in my apartment I am unable to have a hanging grow light over my plants. I do, however, have two gooseneck adjustable standing grow lights that I use mainly for my orchids and a small plumeria tree. The specifications for these types of grow lights would be different than the square or rectangular hanging lights, e.g. PPFD. It would be great if you can do a review of some sort for these types of grow lights.

according to other websites/videos i’ve seen, you’re fine with just white light LED if the plants you’re using the light on will eventually be transplanted outside. the white light is best for germination and seedlings and will be sufficient enough for the early stages and then you’ll need to the other spectrums for fruit growth etc which will be supplied once the plant is transplanted outside. if you’re planing on having an indoor garden from start of seed to finish then i think you may need the other spectrums. i also believe that white LED lights release a certain amount of light from the other spectrums anyways so it ends up working out. mind you this white/day light LED’s will need to have i believe 2-4k lumens and 5000K+ depending on what you’re growing. i’m still learning tho so i may be incorrect.

Good video man! I spent a bunch of time watching and reading explanations on this stuff and can say you covered my hours of research in 20 mins. nice! I used to only use T5's and change from 6700k to full spectrum for blooming.. Just starting growing with a SP150 (the 2' one) along side my 6bulb T-5... That SP150 has an incredibly higher level of light penetration. Wicked good LED at probably the most reasonable price I've found. Def recommend if you wanna get more LEDs

Not sure why but its part wrong. Output = input/resistance and Efficiency = output / input. What matters is the amount of light at a set level - working level, this is called the lux level. The wave band the light omits is also of greater significance with light in one wave band better than in another. If you input 180w and you get 200 lumens at 400mm from the source at a spread of 300mm is it better than the same as the light in another light band but lower lumens (white, red, blue, etc)? The spread is also important if covering a number of plants as the further away ang angle of the light from the source the less lumens. Whether you have 100 LEDs or 50 LEDs producing the same lux level does not matter as long as the power draw at the plug is the same

I start eggplant, peppers and basil in small seed trays in a 10 gallon aquarium with a grow light tube for aquariums. I use the same aquarium in the winter to grow micro greens usually broccoli and bokchoy.

Cree, the top manufacturer of LED dies, the actual light emitting part of an LED, built a LED grow lamp meant to compete with the 600 watt HPS lamps typically used in green house agricultural lighting. Cree used white LEDs supplemented by far red (not infrared) LEDs and created a lamp that was superior to HPS and used significantly less electricity. Digikey, an electronics distributor, sells Samsung and Bridgelux LED modules made for the DIY'er to fabricate grow lamps. The modules are based upon an aluminum printed circuit board, use multiple surface mount LEDs to distribute the heat, are available in a few lengths, and are typically driven by a constant current power supply like a Meanwell. Samsung is making extremely efficient LEDs and are currently the #2 volume manufacturer in the world due to the amount LEDs used in their LCD television sets. I use a lot of grow lights because I live in Canada where we have such long winters with weak light. I've gotten most of my lights from amazon and have had the most success with those advertised as "full spectrum" but after viewing your video I'm not sure if I should trade these in for others which would be even better. Do you have any thoughts about those advertised as "full spectrum"? Also, I remember my Dad using florescent lights in our basement to start seedlings in the spring before planting outside once it got warmer. Do you think florescent lights are even better than the LED (but that they use more energy)? Thanks for all the info! I agree with the others, it's a lot to take in but very important for success! :-)

Full spectrum is hard to answer, you'd have to look at their spectral output chart and make your decision from there. You can certainly start seeds under fluorescents though!

I am not going to claim to be an expert. However I did grow actual “food“ hydroponically for years. Fluorescent light is blue. Which is fine for creating vegetation. But really no plant will begin to flower or bear fruit unless it is exposed to light that is in the yellow/red spectrum. So the answer is probably no. I can’t imagine that you could effectively get your “food“ to flower with fluorescent light. LED lighting generally has a much fuller spectrum of light. So depending on what you did, you would not necessarily have to switch it back-and-forth. I used to switch my crops back-and-forth between fluorescent and HPS.

Great deep & nerdy explanation. I got the micromoles of PAR per joule - efficacy. I do have a question. Red lights and blue lights have the highest efficacy - but I'll live in the same place with my plants - I need the light myself in winter in NY and red/blue light just doesn't make it for me. It is a poor choice to get a full spectrum light as far as efficacy for the plants while not burning too much electricity when I start my spring propagation? w Light 3x3ft In case you are able to answer - thanks for reading and responding. I had previously thought I would buy the MARS Hydro TS 1000w LED grow light 3x3 - but this may be a product that you were comparing since I see "1000w" consuming 150w with 342 LEDs - this seems to be what you are advocating against. My interest in the MARS system was sparked when I watched a Canadian flower farmer switch to them from their fluorescent system and just blow away the old lighting with dark green, sturdy plant growth. Hi Sunny, It depends a little bit on what you are going to grow and how you are going to use your grow area. If you are going to grow high light plants covering your whole grow space, such as tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers or even cannabis, I would recommend two Z5's. Each covering 2'x2' with very high intensity. Possibly, one Z5 could be hung in the middle of your tent and right below it you place a few high light crops. Just outside of the sweet spot and high intensity, you can grow lower light crops such as herbs and seedlings. Depending on what crop you are growing and what stage it is in, you want to achieve a certain intensity. We have made detailed PPFD maps (light intensity maps) that show what intensity both of our lamp models provide at certain heights. The maps also show how big area each intensity will cover at each height. Uploaded picture of intensity maps: i.imgur.com/23TgEFu.jpg The recommendations on the right-hand side of each map are quite high and are meant to include cannabis which has very high light requirements. It is dependent on what you are growing and what stage your plant is currently in. Personally, I use 150 PPFD for vegetable seeds and younglings until they are at least 2"/5cm tall. I aim for 200-300 when they have passed 2"/5cm in height and only for young adults and adult fruiting plants do I aim for 300-500 PPFD. Everything over 500 is very high intensity and mostly used for cannabis, although it can also be used for fruiting vegetables in their adult state. I hope this was helpful. You can't directly define certain lights as the best, because you can't be sure that this light fits all plants.

White light is a combination of Red, Green, and Blue (Primary Colors). If a plant is green, it is reflecting the green component, and absorbing the red, and blue. Which is why red/blue LED lights are great.
