Here's the cheap way to do it... at Wally's, sometimes they sell 48" LED shop lights for $12 each... they work fine for seedlings.... just keep them close to the light and don't shut the light off. With houseplants... 1 to 2 ft above. Been doing it for years. It works. I have some that are 6-7 years old still working. The latest ones I added are 4 years running. Out of 12 lights, so far I had one fail after several years of use.

In Canada you can't get cheap shop lights anymore, everything is jacked up close to the same price as actual grow lights.

I've been using Mars hydro and spider farmer LED lights with great results. I started with a 600w then upgraded to a 1000w for a larger light foot print. Combined with a 4 x 4 grow tent and I can simulate an optimal environment to grow my citrus trees during the winter.

I love this because I bought grow lights two years ago after about a month of serious study and I bought the exact ones you recommended - Barrina and Spider Farmer. I don’t regret the time, because I use them for orchids and now understand what PPFD is needed for each type of orchid such as cattleyas, dendrobiums, vandas, etc. One point that I didn’t hear you make is the lifespan of the lights. The higher end lights cost more initially but with top quality diodes they last longer. When you consider the lifespan and customer support, they could end up costing about the same over a longer time span

On the cheap: I use regular 'lamp bulb', LED for quite cheap in special. About 2 60w equivalent LED/1.50$ cdn Pub a bunch of them on a 2x4 using a 1.30$ cdn light socket. Few 120V reclaims wire, bam. You can make it look great if you want to, or just ugly for 1-2 months, dealer's choice!

I'd like you to compare the shop lights and grow lights at Walmart. I bought 2 foot grow lights 20 bucks they have another that has both red and blue for 30. They also have 4 foot shop lights for 15 and 20. First year gardener here but my seedlings are doing great. Having them close doesn't bother me.

I notice that if you add "plant grow light " to the description the lights get more expensive. I us the Barrina 6 pack led shop light and the Hykolity 4 pack shoop lights for my seedlings. All are 4 foot long. Built my own holder for the Barrina light. They work very well for seedlings.

Good intro video....I would have been the person who could use this last year. Vipar and spider are good lights to confirm. I bought a noname IMVSINCERE that "looks like" spider last year. It even has the spectrum shown but no ppfd. Lots of lumens but absolutely no energy getting to plants. This light sits above my cleaning sink as an expensive task light now. Also of looking to get 4x4 lights, Medic grow has been great and really affordable for the real light cannons.

Hi Robert. Found you from the Maritime Gardener. Loved the soil info you two discussed in yr new book. So decided 2 look you up and c u had a channel. How come I didn't know this ? I was excited 2 c how many discussions u actually covered. Just finished watching this one and about 2 watch the tool sharpening one since I love pruning! Anyway, I believe all of what u showed but I wanted 2 let u know that I'm having 😊great success keeping a large pot of annuals that was outside last summer growing and not dropping any leaves which I have just sitting under a wall light in our entrance and I changed the regular bulbs to 1 warm grow light bulbs and 1 purple one. ( Yes that old technique u mentioned). And we can't believe the difference from last year with not having the purple bulb. ( Just purchased from Dollarama...lol) and the light is about 3 ft above the top of the plants. I keep it on from dusk till midnight. During the day it is sitting about 3 ft from the sidelight of our east facing entrance. Sorry, don't have the box 2 tell u the spectrum, etc.

Love your videos. You're the best source for real information about gardening on youtube and the internet in general. I have a few questions. How much electricity does one of those good grow lights consume in a month for example? how much does it effectively cost for someone interested in buying one? Are there any good grow lights that don't require hanging from the ceiling? I live in an appartment and it's just not possible for me to make holes.
@Gardenfundamentals110 ай бұрын
Look at the wattage. When you buy electricity you pay for kilowatts. 1 kw = 1,000 watts. So a 100 watt light which is around what most real LED lights use (like the spider farmer) it can run 10 hours to use 1 kw. You will have to check your hydro bill to get your rate.

there getting hard to find but I have ten HYPERLITE Groplanner LED Grow Light GP1500m that I paid $44 each In a 4x4 with a light per plant for flower. two are for my 4x4 tent for veg . The rest are spares. I also haveT5 Fluorescent Strip Light DL841 wich is $17 on Amazon. Cool thing is when you get them they are $50 sun blaze 41s! Don't get me wrong they have made plenty of good plant but I want perfect plants for a 5x5 so I got a MARS HYDRO FC-E1000W off Amazon for $750 . Massive difference went from 3 oz per plant to 16 ! So now the Groplanner are for veg only .

"We have now for some time carried out a number of trials which have proved to give very satisfactory growth. We got the best results in growth and compactness with a composite color combination of 60% Red (660nm), 30% Blue (460nm) and 10% White (430 - 730 nm). Suitable areas of use are then the cultivation of spices, the raising of plants and potato cultivation. If more compact growth is desired, choose 40/40/20 or to get an increased yield in tomato cultivation, choose 80/20/0. Specification: Diameter 27 cm Illuminance = 200,000 Lux PPFD = 3700 mE/m2/s 90 W electrical power consumption." That's what modern greenhouses use.

Bonjour!

Good timing, the no name grow light that I have and started it up this morning decided to go on strike ( it was the vegetable light ) so I was wondering for a short period of time would the bloom light do any good until I get another light? I learned some stuff from this video.
@kansasgardener58446 ай бұрын
There is one big problem with using lights like Spider farmer and Viparspectra sell, and that is they were developed to grow Marijuana not vegetable seedlings. As seen in the par graphs, these lights put out huge numbers in the center of the light. Way too much par for vegetable seedlings. They can and will burn your plants. And the further away you get from the center the less par you get.I tried a viparspectra and hated it because the overall light spread is awful. I suggest using 4' shop lights with 5000 or 6400 Kelvin and 5000 lumens to start seedlings.They are cheap, easy to use, and par stable along the length of the light. You can buy these lights at Walmart with a 5 year warranty. You can also find them just about anywhere lights are sold.

This guy does not actually test any of the cheap lights and really just cynically exposes marketing scam, I have a few of the cheap full spectrum strip lights and have tested the PPFD which was very good, he should compare the led's in the cheap ones with the led's in the exy ones, my succulents seem to be doing quite ok.

Or...... Hear me out.... If you think about it, I know some people find that hard.. But if you think about it, it's really not hard to understand why people find these useful. Either their climate/environment is unhospitable to what they want to grow so they have to grow indoors, they could be out of season, raising seedlings or they could have a terrarium . Just four very good reasons to have a grow light...
