Loving these informational videos. In regards to the surveys, who conducts them and what are they used for? Thank you for all the great info!

The Joint Commission conducts them. They make sure the hospital is upholding certain standards.

Great video as usual Kim. Thanks for the tips. As a student, I can attest to becoming best buddies with Chemistry. There is NO way around it. I just finished Organic Chemistry over the summer and am currently taking Nutritional Chemistry. If I could sum it up in one word.......... Intense :)

Hi Kim. Great video as usual. I am a student right now, just starting out but I'm getting really discouraged because the chemistry is killing me. Already! I'm going to stick with it but might have to reassess at the end of this semester.

Hi kim , am glad that i found your channel . You say very helpful informations. I am going through some rough days where I don’t know what is my next step . I am a college student ( am from Libya ) in Tehran , Iran . Second year in nutrition science , i would like to continue my studies and get my RD And become a clinical dietitian. am thinking in going to Malaysia as it is the most suitable country from me right now . My only concern is that when i go there , i would fell less than everybody else. Not ready enough , short in information. May you please help me to get myself ready for the real world . I want to be all armed and ready , and not spend any extra time filling in the gaps for the classes or materials that should have had . So as a nutrition student how can i expand my knowledge ( in which part i should expand it ) in a way that it will make me either in the same spot as others , or even better, a step ahead . What do i need to become ready ??? Thank you

Hello Kim, thanks for your video. They are always timely and informative, I'm currently in my second year of a diet tech program and I'm taking my first Chem. I can already see the relevance to what I'm learning in nutrition. As i do my Clinical in the nursing homes and hospital i notice a bit of impatience from nurses and doctors. Could you do a video on how the RD is viewed by the rest of the medical team? Every time i tell a Dr, dentist, physical therapist that I'm going to become an RD the response has been "great we need you", yet i sense a difference while in clinicals

I think the impatience of the RN and MD has to do with the relationship which the RD builds. I have found myself politely informing diverse members of the interdisciplinary team of the importance of the discipline. I will consider doing such a video. Thank you for the video idea.

Hey Kim! I really like watching your videos. I appreciate your tips in this video before becoming an RD. I remember in one video you commented about taking a year off of school right after you graduated and you volunteered with the Hispanic population teaching them about nutrition. I live in Salt Lake City, Utah and would enjoy volunteering with the Hispanic population and teaching healthy cooking habits just like you did. Could you tell me a little bit more about what you did, how you did it and who you volunteered/worked for please?

Hi Kim, I recently started watching your videos, they're so informative and lively! So, I graduated with a degree in nutrition and dietetics from Arizona State University a few months ago. Currently, I'm looking for a full-time job. As such, I am studying for the DTR exam to take it and enhance my job prospects. What are some other tips (types of jobs, places I could apply to) you have for someone who wants nutrition/dietetics work experience between undergrad and the DI? Thanks! -Alexis L.

Hmmm.. you could try working as a foodservice personnel in a hospital which has therapeutic diets. This will allow you to interact with the dietitian.

Kim Rose, does college get easier (or feel easier) when you've completed the general education requirements and start on the nutrition college classes?

Hi Marissa. In my case no, but everyone has a different experience. I say no because my professors expected a lot more from me. It is VERY attainable nonetheless.

The role of Joint Commission and the Number of CEC required after you become a dietitian can you expand on this.
@KimRoseDietitian
@KimRoseDietitian 6 жыл бұрын
By CEC do you mean CEU (continuing education units)? If so 75 CEU's are needed every 5 years for license renewal. Related to the Joint commission please see this link beginning at page 30: www.kyha.com/docs/Presentations/DietaryStandards.pdf It's pretty concise

If I volunteer at my local hospital as a nutrition major, I shouldn’t network with professionals because a recommendation letter is not promised. Could I just volunteer without seeking a letter from the professional? Would it still help me out with my resume’?
@KimRoseDietitian

Of course in my opinion. It’s all about forming connections and networking

Hi Kim I did so much chemistry at university I decided why not do a chemistry minor. I am not a chemistry fan but like you said chemistry and you become pals whether you like it or not. I wish I knew how difficult getting into an internship was before I became a dietitian. I was able to work as a diet tech before I became an RD officially so I got a feel of the environment so not much surprises. Just know that you are going to have to learn how to build relationships with other health care professionals. The slp becomes your best friend. I also have a question for you. I know that you are vegan and you worked as a renal dietitian. What advice would you give to a strict vegan on dialysis with regards to MNT.
@KimRoseDietitian
@KimRoseDietitian 6 жыл бұрын
You are so right:SLP's are my BFF. I just met another one yesterday who works at my neighboring hospital! I have a minor in microbiology so the sciences are definitely important. I have never met a vegan on dialysis. I've met vegetarians and to be honest I do encourage them to eat eggs. I do not see how someone can be vegan and on hemodialysis. I've tried to search many different alternatives, but they are too high in phosphorus and/or are poor protein sources for the disease state.
@kerri-annbest6571

Hi Kim, Thanks for your reply. Just a case where it is difficult to manage because of the phos and potassium content of foods. My advise was to choose the lowest K+ options, never miss any dialysis sessions and to always take their phos binders, That's all I can think of. Being an RD is not always easy and there is no one size fit all. Love my job though :)

I have not volunteered for anything because it is hard getting in contact with the dietitians in my area. Do you know anything else I can do to establish a good network? I really need a job after I graduate.

What do you mean by surveys?
@KimRoseDietitian
@KimRoseDietitian 6 жыл бұрын
Great question. So every 3 or so years my hospital gets surveyed by it's credentialing body. The credentialing body carries a lot of power and the hospital is expected to uphold agreed upon standards.

Hii .. I'm planning on becoming a registered dietitian because i think it's fun to be one and I'm interested in health! But i read about dietitians that they are disrespected by doctors and they don't value her work they think she's not that of a importance! Another thing is that i dont like chemistry I don't understand it😩i dont know what to go into if I don't succeed in dietics :/ that was my plan A another thing is that they dont pay well and u spent so much money educating ☹️
@KimRoseDietitian
@KimRoseDietitian 6 жыл бұрын
I really depends upon the relationships one has with the physicians. The pay varies depending on where you work (location and focus). Chemistry is pivotal. For instance, I'm awful in math , but I kept telling myself I liked it, studied constantly and was able to pass major classes with an A or B.

whats funny to me is how becoming a dietitian has alot todo with chemistry meanwhile our bodies are electric in nature... I mean yes chemistry is involved but i wonder how much of the course is spent talking about the electric nature of our bodies.
