My wife said we have an extra room in the house and that she would like to see a baby in there making a mess and obviously we have to clean every single day and feed him every day and deal with all the expenses. I still don't know if she meant "let's have a baby" or "let's get a Tegu" .... 🤔

@angelbaby.78973 жыл бұрын
@@filmsagainstempires1388 No, maybe when they're younger you can feed them a pinkie mouse once in a while but they rely mostly on insects like crickets, mealworms, roaches, etc, but you can give them a little turkey meat as a treat but as they are older they are primarily vegetables and fruits, so no live animals or anything! Early July I had one wander around in my backyard. He’s a very large black and white tegu. He is obviously lost. Although he makes me extremely nervous I call him and feed him everyday. Very unpredictable, I meet him halfway to give his meal. Not sure what to do, don’t want him to be hurt by someone. I call him Iggy. And he’s really growing on me.

Your tegu bites seem to be him thinking that you are food. Tegus do become annoying pets during puberty (especially males) but they need a lot of food during this time Bc it is a time of growth. Maybe you can increase food intake? Also, one thing not mentioned was the amount of time necessary to achieve a very tame tegu. By this, I am saying that daily handling and interactions are the only way to get that “puppy” tame tegu. People want instant gratification, and tegus are not this. They need months of work put in before they are 100% comfy with you.

I was very pleased Pubba didn't go down for brumation this year. He sleeps on my belly every single night, I would have greatly missed that. Pubba is still going through his puberty, but the worst aspect is he will sometimes be moody and decide he needs some space. He has never bit me or done anything I would consider aggressive or defensive with me.

Tegu's are also really smart. My girl legit bulldoze/broke 5 of her enclosures like the raptors in Jurassic Park she would find the weak points and smash it with her about until she was free. I eventually had to get a macaw cage to keep her in. She also went through 'teenage rage' in which I had to dodge her, though she calmed down for me.

I'm fortunate enough to live in the country. I have a freezer full of blue gill, wild turkey, frogs, etc. During trout season i got the roe sacs from everyone. I tell the turkey hunters i know that i will take their thighs, legs, hearts and livers (all parts usually not kept). During frog season i told all the giggers i would take thier tops (usually not kept). Then took my grandson fishing and caught pounds and pounds of tiny bluegills. Bag full of crayfish in freezer. Rabbit, squirrels and venison coming in the fall. Possibly beaver, fox and raccoon. Blackberries, raspberries, grapes, melons, and paw paws grow on our property. All pesticide free. It doesn't have to cost a lot to feed them if you live rurally and are willing to work a bit. We freeze everyrhing for a month before feeding to kill any possible parasites. Her favorites are fish, frog, grapes and turkey but she eats just about anything she is offered. Still need cash for lights, bulbs, heaters etc, supplements/vitamins, some fruits/veg and vet.

@spencerwagner9032 жыл бұрын
You need to leave any new reptile alone in the enclosure for at least a week or more before you try to interact with them. He’s running cuz he’s stressed from the change, give him two or three weeks without messing with him- maybe don’t go in at ALL unless it’s to spot clean and feed- and then check on him and slowly start interacting. That should help at least

You can freeze dry fish and chicken for longer storage options that also is cheaper. Hop on a friend’s/charter boat and get in the water. Good enough for you and them.

I captured a 3 or so foot Golden Tegu in my backyard as a kid. It was pestering neighbors. I traded it to a pet shop to get supplies for my gerbils, guinea pigs and fish around 12 years old. I would also go to the everglades and catch yellow and red rat snakes to trade. The Tegu was insane. The pet shop dropped a mouse and the thing nearly jumped out of their tank to catch it mid air and was still pissed off.

I adopted mine older from people who kept it in a cage way to small… now hes outside walking, he roams the house, he seems so so happy now that hes not in his prison, hes cuddly loves scratches, however my issue with him in variety in diet, he will only eat chicken breast (cut to safe size no bones) i recently started rolling the chicken in raw egg because he wouldnt lick it up by itself, but ive offered bannanas tomatoes carrots a bunch of things that i read where safe but he just goes for the chicken only. Any advice on how to entice hin to eat more? Maybe hes older then i thought(hes 2.5-3 ft) he has a vet appointment the 9th for some help with everything and make sure hes A okay. For a guy we just got who was left in a a small awairium for years hes so sweet and it makes my heart so happy to see him move and explore. Please dont be negative ive done everything i can read about, my boyfriends building him a big cage. We just got him about a week or two ago. Idk if you figured this out or not, but here is my experience as both a retired vet tech and tegu scale baby keeper. First look at the ingredients my wife and I both went through the "raw dog food" stage and let me tell you the only brand that we were comfortable enough with ingredients wise was instincts but with rabbit. Not only did a small bag cost a lot of money, but it only covered 3 feedings it's just not worth it. 2nd thing is go to the Asian market there you can get chicken hearts and livers its more lean and has more protein than say a thigh, but still add supplements. Occasionally feed them frozen thawed rodents live prey is great from them and some stores will even sell can of snails. Over all enrich them with various foods staying on a fatty food or just eating dog food isn't the best. Sometimes we will feed our boy a cracked eggs sometimes it's boiled for a few minutes Occasionally we will crack it on a salad raw, will mix in the shell, and really mix the concoction because some tegus don't like their veggies xD. Either way it's not the best way to do dog food...cat food I would say was even borderline for us as well just have to really look at the contents of the product and see how much salt and other additives are in there. For a cat it might be okay, but a lizard eh they are more sensitive and process food differently.

You can tame even the most hatefull as hell brutal Tegu's though. Truthfully if you pick your tegu up everytime there in there pissy moods it breaks them and theystop that aggression cause yourshowing them your not afraid if a tegu knows your scared your done u must pick it up never give the tegu what it wants or it will continue to try and dominate. Yourshowing them who is boss evertime you get them when there fighting without hurting them dont take that wrong u should never hurt your tegu or any living thing for that matter but tegus pick-up on your not afraid and you will pick them up no matter how bad your tegu is being. There so smart compared to what people think. Theyhave to be the smartest lizard there is but i have seen very mean as hell tegus get tamed quickly when the owners are simply not afraid and willing to take that leap of faith thattheycan control there tegu. There strong yes butnot thatdamn strong. Its there nails i feel can hurt you if you dont keep them under control. Bites should not happen though any real Lizard owner knows how to quicky and safely subdue a lizard without injury and safely. Enough times of proving to the tegu you can handle him in any situation then thats justthat much faster he becomes a tame little guy
